So pleased. Are these 'invitations' formal, non-formal, do we have to RSVP?
And if you know the English comedy 'keeping up apperances...'

I'm not entirely sure either that you have complied with the posting agreement. Would his posts really cont as proper reviews? Moderator?

I did reviewed others' websites with my limited experience on website design and implementation. I only have a couple of months (part time) working on my first website. This is why I came here to ask for comments from other webmasters. Please, do not try to frustrate me.

OK, i have three bits of advice for your website:
1.) drop 'hot' it makes it sound like a porn website
2.) Drop the times new roman - it makes it look ugly
3.) Give your site a nicer feel with more graphics

doesn't look like you've made a very good entry to the forums from what ive been hearing!

Thanks heebiejeebieclu.
1) I do not like it either for the same reason but I have to use it (I already submitted it to lots of search engines) before I can register a new one. Good domain names were always registered by others. Sad
2) I do not specify the font name in my html code, it seems Times New Roman is the default in browser. I did control the font size in my last update so that IE and Firefox will get similar display. I will consider the font name at next update.
3) I will try. Thanks again for all advice.

It is my first time to join a forum. I am not familiar with the playing roles. I did not read existing posts including agreement carefully. I guess some new members could be in the same case as I was. Why are we here? To make friends. To help each other. Why does this forum exist? To provide a platform and let others share ideas and help each other. So, I wish the forum team and experienced members to be nicer on the new guys. Do not make them feel frustrated or discriminated! If the new guy did not follow the roles, it is nice to post reminder instead of deleting it or dropping it. It is ok to remove his post if he has no action for a few days after the reminder. Yes, I agree we need playing roles. I just wish the steps to be nicer to force the roles.

As the song says "we are best friends like friend should be". I hope more friends will join us.

You might want to try using CSS to control the font family in your site. The following goes in the section of your code:

body {
font-family:verdana, arial, sans-serif;
}
'

Thank you Renegade. I tried body{} in my local environment and it looks better. Do you imply the font verdana or arial is the most popular in websites?

I hope all of you forgive me for not reading carefully and following the agreement. I appreciate your help.

I don't imply anything, just that CSS should be used to control the font family on your page. I just used Verdana and Arial as examples. Smiling

I would use Verdana.

Your code is ugly, REALLY ugly IMO. I think tables in web design are extrodinarily unprofessional these days. I would suggest hard coding the site using CSS for layout and XHTML for displaying the information.

- Change the fonr
- Use CSS
- Dont use tables
- Why would i want my add with you? Just because its free?
- Why would i pay for an add with you?
- How many unique hits does your site get?

I am a new webmaster so my HTML code could be unprofessional. Using tables is not a sign of unprofessional. Yahoo, Google, and your CTS all have tables in the source code. I learned a little old version HTML a few years ago for creating personal home page. Before I started this time, I just read the source from a few websites for quickly picking up. I focused on the features more than the HTML code in the past a few months. I do not know much about CSS but I will learn. I will try to improve the font/layout/html-code later as all of you suggested. Thanks. That is why I invited you to review. Smiling

Why would you ad with my website? Yes, because it is free. No sign up. No email required. No question asked. I could not find such web advertising services on other classifieds websites.

How many unique hits does my site get? I cannot get the unique hits from my web host cPanel. It only shows me the unique visitors and the total hits. But, they are business secret. Smiling
However, it does not hurt the advertiser because we do not charge any penny. I believe that more advertisers post ads on the website, more visitors will come to view, and finally, more benefits both advertisers and viewers will have.

Thank you all for comments. These comments really help me build better website. Since I am new webmaster, I am happy to hear from you on the HTML code and layout.

It seems some of you like my idea more than the current layout/code. That is a good sign. If the idea is bad, the website cannot run. If the layout is bad, we can improve.

This site was lunched on 12/2/04 and transfer to current web host on 12/14/04 (because the old web host had down time on both web server and MySQL). On 1/3/05, I found its Google Rank became 3/10 from 0/10.

But I am actually building a new free web advertising site as you guys suggested:
- Drop the "Hot" in domain name.
- Use better font.
- May have better layout view. (Do not expect too much changes.)
Plus some new features. This new site will be rank 0/10 at beginning.

I do not want announce the new site because some features are under development. I cannot drop the Hot-Web-Ads.com not only because it has 3/10 rank, but also it is getting more returning visitors. I wil keep running both sites.

I like the site. Very clean, symmetric, if a little busy. But I think that type of site just lends itself to some slight busy-ness.

There's really only two things that bugged me. First, the icon for your site is a smiley face with a Christmas hat. 1. It's no longer Christmas. 2. That doesn't seem to have anything to do with your site's design. Maybe using that little logo on the top left instead would be good.

Second, the flashing NEW for the message board posts is really distracting. It's not horrible, since on my browser it's off the bottom of the screen when the page first loads. I'm set at 1024x768, so you will have some people that can see it on the first screen. My personal rule of thumb is animation in moderation, and almost never use blinking graphics. I believe that only one site my company designed has any animation on the front page.

Of course, as with anything, that's just my opinion.

Thank you Tim. I thought I updated the icon after Christmas but the hat is still there. Confused Just changed to another icon.

Yes, I need a logo and it is under design. Thanks again.

with all the negative comments about your site, i was expecting something far worse than i got. its not that bad is it.

i would play around with the banner a bit, im not sure why theres red on it when the rest of the site is green with a white background. it just dosnt seem to work for me.

I also had to scroll sidewards to view the wholepage (800x600 IE6) this is most annoying and if possible should be made not to happen. I like the layout of it until you get down to the Valuable Resource section where it becomes a bit cluttered.

nice site though for a relative new comer and good look.

Do you own a forum, why not add it to Forum Search?

You are right, newforumonline. When I get the number of ads as much as inetgiant, I will definitely show the numbers on the home page. Wink

As suggested by newforumonline, the number of ads in each major category now show up so that the visitor can understand better which category is more popular. It is a few months new-born website. Do not expect it has the same number as other years websites. I am sure I can catch up eventually because the no sign up free ads service will attract more and more visitors.

Thanks, newforumonline.

I have changed my job in last 2 months so I could not spend too much time on the website development.

People do like free service! The site has more than 8000 ads after 6 months online. I just added Featued Ads list in categories tonight. The Featued Ads are from affiliate program so that I may make some money for the web hosting fee. Sticking out tongue

Now I am thinking what I should do next. Any comments are welcomed!

Actually I dont

Your site doesnt look bad with tables, not a big deal. Its harder to maintain tables though

Quote: btw...TaylorAtCTS over 90% of users won't know whether your site is tables or CSS. All that matters in design is the appearance to the visitor....good design is good design whether it be with CSS or tables.

To those of us who pride ourself for clean coding using the best possible code to do so.. it does matter. I find CSS easier to maintain, easier to use, faster, and all around better.

He used tables.. thats fine.. its just gona be harder to maintain no biggie.. just reviewing

END OF CSS TABLE DEBATE, new thread for that Smiling

Anyway, your site looks good; I will sign up for your free advertising I suppose.. cant hurt.

Personally, I think your color scheme needs work. Also, you need a logo.

In addition, I find the layout confusing, and this isn't a site I'd come back to. Don't mean to be harsh, just trying to give you my opinion.

I think if you showed the number of ads posted in each category, it should help people to understand better which categories are most popular and which are less.
You can see the example on this advertising site:
