Before you review this site I want you to understand this site is not meant to remove traffic or users from webmaster-forums. This application is meant to be a suppliment to all of the great features available at webmaster-forums.net.

Thank you webmaster-forums.net users. While reading reviews on my previously submitted site (artofmath.com) I found myself wondering how my site compared to other websites. Because of those reviews I decided to create a site dedicated to reviewing websites.

summary:
w3reviews.com allows webmasters and website owners to understand how other Internet users perceive their site.

Thank you for taking the time to review this site.

Ah. Well, let's start from the top and work down. Bear in mind I am using Firefox latest version.

  1. After and around the logo there is a big white space
  2. "Username" and "Password" are white and therefore are invisible
  3. The "Username" and "Password" boxes are misaligned
  4. Links on left look like google ads and are therefore completely ignored by the user
  5. Good content and images in middle - just around that that lacks great stuff
  6. Error when clicking on Art of Math link
  7. Links at bottom are white and therefore are invisible
  8. Actually quite a lot of "invisible" links
  9. No actual link to art of math on lft hand side
  10. Overall - 6/10

Can go into more detail if required.

Thank you for the feedback. Wow, I didn't expect anything like that. I am using IE 6, so my experience is very different. I do need to build it to be cross-browser compatible, so this feedback is very helpful. I wish I understood Firefox's browser better, a majority of the errors listed above are hard for me to fix without that knowledge.

In my IE -
1. No white space around logo
2. The background of the site is navy blue, so the username and password fields do show up for me.
3. The username and password fields look exactly even on my browser.
4. I want a majority of the users to ignore the sponsors. I want more people to use the functionality built into the tool instead of leaving to do math problems.
5. Thank you. Like #2 - the rest of the page is navy blue which draws a lot of attention to the main content.
6. I just clicked on it and it didn't produce an error. I hope firefox doesn't have a set of errors that I need to learn also. I am finally comfortable with IE errors.
7. The navy background fixes that as well.
8. same as #7
9. same as #6
10. for the number of errors you experienced, 6/10 is very generous.

I am willing to fix as many problems as possible so Firefox users do not experience these problems. What % of internet users / webmasters use this browser?

Thanks again for your feedback.

Wow!!! Night and Day between Firefox and Internet Explorer. Wow!!! In IE it looks very nice. Well designed. Very professional looking. Great job.

Here's the problem. We've debated the actual stats here before but in general your common everyday internet users use Firefox about 5-10% of the time and growing every day. Tha's already nothing to sneeze at, but your site's intended audience isn't your everyday grandma looking at family photos. Your intended audience is professional and/or intermediate webmasters, which is a whole 'nother ball of wax. According to our recent informal survey http://www.webmaster-forums.net/showthread.php?t=27386 it looks like as many as 70% of webmasters (people who would have an interest in visiting your site) prefer Firefox as their primary browser, and many of those who don't still use it on occassion. Your inconvenience just shot up to end-of-the-world urgency!

All I can tell you is that if you get your site to look as nice as it does in IE then great! But there is no "if" for you... you MUST make that cross-browser compliant.

Now the only thing I'll add to the review is that IMO the site loaded exceptionally slow for me, both in FF and IE.

Good luck.

your background colour isn't displaying in mozilla, so all the white text isn't seen.

TIP: never use white on dark backgrounds, use an off white so if background doesn't display the text/link can still be made out.

Also the dark blue isn't showing on the dark background (in IE), the titles "SITE OF THE WEEK" , "SPONSORS" and "A premium sponsorship includes a ..." can't be read

When you click on the "Recently submitted sites" link, it gives an database error

In my style.css file I have specified the background-color in the body tag as navy blue. I remember when I first started learning css I made a site with a lot of different tags in different table cells. When I looked at it in IE is looked alright, in Netscape it was the ugliest site I had ever seen. I guess I will set the bgColor in the body tag instead of using css. Is that the proper fix? Is there a better way to manage these attributes in the css file?

I will be downloading Firefox this weekend. fifeclub is exactly right - my audience is using it, I must know it.

Busy - I love the tip. I would like to think I would have figured that out on my own, but who knows when that would have happened. Great idea, I'll definately do that. Also, when I click the link under the "recently created sites" section it works without an error. I want to get the error so I can fix whatever it is, but I don't really know how to troubleshoot it without experiencing it myself. If you get the error again, can you please post the error message you are getting.

Thank you again everyone for the feedback. I hope when everything is completed a few of you might be interested in posting your sites to be reviewed.

When clicking on ArtOfMath I get the following error

Quote: Microsoft JET Database Engine error '80040e14'

Syntax error (missing operator) in query expression '[SITEID] = 1 AND [REVIEWERID] ='.

/functions/recordView.asp, line 9

The site looks great with 800x600 resolution but any higher and there is too much empty space.

The blue text for "premium sponsorship" is too dark it makes it very hard to read.

Great, thank you.

I launched netscape and found what was happening. All of the reports above were true with Netscape, so I fixed as many as I could.

The resolution it was designed for was 1024 x 768. On my development machine I am running 1280 x 1024 and it looks fine to me. I wanted the users to be able to print any page and any time without having half of the screen cut off, which is why I chose such a small page structure. The structure can be changed, but because of the gradiant background a lot of images would have to be recreated and the primary site structure would need a major overhaul. I would like to avoid that if possible. Let me know if you think this would make a big difference or if this change can be skipped.

Even with Netscape, the dark blue text looks how I was hoping. I am definately here for valuable feedback, which I believe everyone's comments are, but let me explain my thoughts on the dark blue and tell me if I have made a mistake or not.

I wanted the dark blue to be exactly what it is, too dark to draw any attention to. On my screen it is definately readable, but doesn't draw any of my attention to it unless I am looking for "hidden" text. My thought was that anyone wanting to advertise on this page would read all of the text around the advertising area and then would find the instructions and the link to click on for more information. Tell me if this doesn't make sense, or if I took the dark blue thing a bit too far. I can't fix it for a few days if the final decision is that it needs to be changed.

I have lightened the blue a little and created a reviewer account for webmaster-forums.net users. I realized the important parts of the site were not being reviewed because nobody had access. Below is the login information so you can test the functions.

I like the idea of having a number rating for the different elements of the reviewed website. It looks great and I will definatly sign up. The only thing I would change is the Post Reply box. It should have a border.

Are still testing or are you ready for real members yet?

A border is a great idea for the reply box. I will be setting it up sometime tonight.

The site is still in it's testing phases, but if you would like to setup your account now and start getting reviewed that is a great way to test the site. You are welcome to get started today, just understand that changes will be made in the next couple of weeks.

I will be getting firefox this weekend. Until then, I am unable to troubleshoot why the login works in IE and not in firefox.

Alright, I couldn't wait. Firefox is installed, the login has been corrected, and everything looks great to me. Please keep testing and let me know what I'm missing.

still pending - border around reply box.

I am using Firefox more than using IE.

Why is the content area so small? It occurs about 1/3 of my browser diaplay window. Do you plan to increase the size when you have more content?

The website has been setup to work exactly the same with IE as it does with Firefox. If you know of a function that does not work the same please let me know so I can fix it.

The content is in a small area so users can print the page at any time without having to take an additional step of moving to a "printer friendly" page. The content within this tool can all be housed within this small of a space, so even when more content is available the size will not change.

I have considered guest reviews. I will most likely be adding that as a service, but only to users sent for the purpose of reviewing a specific site. A site will have a button (88 x 31) that says something like "review my site @ w3reviews.com" and when a user clicks on it they will have the ability to review the site without creating a reviewer account. As of today, I don't plan on making that available for regular users of the site.

One small tip: You can specify different style sheets according to whether the user is printing or viewing the page on a screen (amongst other things I wont specify here). Try setting-up another CSS file optimising the page for print, then add another element to you with the attribute "media" set to "print" e.g.

This is where the wonders of semantic markup really start to work, unfortunately you have set widths on all your td's so options are limited - have you considered using tags for structure instead? Then you can specify widths in css and vastly cut-down the amount of code needed on each page.

Tables are for displaying data in a tabular format! Semantic markup is the future!
