www.mistyrichmond.com - any thoughts

Hi,

I'm almost done with a small website for a photographer friend of mine - it's almost there - I love the colours for example, and the general layout is fine, but there's something missing. I need to add more salt I think!

any ideas and any critiques would be most welcome. Please hold off on the validation at the moment - that's something I need to sort out (I know it should be the first thing to sort out, but I threw this together pretty quick as my friend had some potential jobs lined up and needed a portfolio online

here it is

Love it!

The colours are great, it looks great, well done! One word, solid (don't know why).

For some reason though the picture navigation confused me (could be something to do with the red wine I'm drinking though...)

When you click on the album section it would be great to see some small previews in the rectangular boxes of what you are going to see..

All the best,

Matt.

It seems like it has a very confused Z-index...

...lemme try to explain that...

The background is "alive" giving a perception of depth, but then the colors you have chosen seem to flatten everything out again...but then in the midst of the flatness you bump out for your menu again...

Personally it seems as if you should loose the images as buttons. If you did that, you could recombine what you have into a Flash or JS menubar that minimizes/restores an image depending on the page...a cool effect.

Otherwise it looks wonderful, and you can also tell your friend that I like their photography...very much so Smiling

To go a bit further on jjinno's explination of z-index

Think of three dimensions: height, width and depth.

y = height (vertical)
x = width (horizontal)
z = depth

In other words, z the value determines how close something is to you. It is the third dimension.

Excellent feedback - thanks so much - I'll take it on board anbd have a play around this weekend. I definately agree with the z-index thing, although I hadn't thought of it until you mentioned it.

NOt sure I agree about the nav though. I really dislike flash navigation as it is woefully inaccessible, and just a bit of fluff. Just my personal opinion

I'll pass on your kind words about my friends photography. She's just decided to go freelance full time, so she's freaking out a touch, but I think she has moree than enough talent to be a success

One thing I noticed in the portfolio section is the text you have above the photo... I can't see what they are at all. But then again I am using Firefox so maybe it is different in other browsers. Just for your information... Laughing out loud

I like the template a lot. Very simple, yet effective. The photography is beautiful.

A few picky things that I noticed:

The links in the navigation are different sizes, I tend to prefer them all to be the same width...easily set in CSS.

Second, you should set the inputs (on the contact page) in CSS...they don't really match the template (the blue border and white background)

Other than that, it's fairly good. Good luck. Wink

it's the logo. The design looks good, colours are interesting. Layout is good. With such a simple design a more intricate font would be good here. I'm finding the fonts in general to be a little off. The navbar font should be the same as the body, and if you're going to use a sans serif for logo and page headers it should be significantly different from the body font. It's hard to use two different fonts from the same family in one design.

I'm thinking the logo might work with a scripted font, especially in the dot thing. Maybe if the M and R were intertwined somehow.

The "welcome to misty richmond dot com" on the home page really needs to go. Especially the "dot" part. What you should have here is an introduction to the site (Molly richmond is a photographer in .... wherever she is .... etc.) That would be better for the SE's too.

One other little thing I don't like is the gaps in between the backgrounds on the navbar. Those should come together.

Actually, you might want to put in some text on the portfolio and the contact us pages. Explain a little more what she is about and get some keywords in.

I like how this site was done and i also like the layout. But something is missing in the home page, add more content to it or something but its looks pretty good!

Well I think the site is great. The gap in the nav bar is somthing to look at fixing but not a necessity, it's just an opinion.

You could use php to detect if flash is instaled and if its not offer a javascript alternative

I had to comment on this one because FINALLY! A GOOD photograher's site.

My only issues with this:
The white link color is washed out against the green, and a strain on the eyes to see it well. I'd make them a darker color, and maybe even bold to make them be more prominant.

The rollover effect....it may be that I'm just anal about exact space, but I'd like to see the same width on all off the rollover effects.

The code and the css has some errors....validate and correct them!

Congrats to you. Most photograhers are SO afraid of solid navigation and usability. They seem to fear the nav living above the fold will take away from thier images, so either you were lucky in that you had a client who knew to design for the end user, or you did some serious client education. Good job!

I think this is a great site, but the homepage picture should be in colour maybe... it seems a bit dull, but good work !!

I really like the portfolio section of this site. Being a photographer myself I am always looking for ways to display my work and I think you did a grat job of that. On the flip side I dont like the nav bar and the welcome message with the word dot needs to go. Just my thoughts take them for what they are worth.
