www.michaeleburgess.com - finally up
Hi,
I disappeared on everyone last time - I've just got back from having to return to England for a while (from UK but live in SF) Iread all your comments with great interest. Especially the breakdown of my message for search engines from BUSY - You give me way too much credit. I've always been bad at SEO - I guess I should just try it without thinking.
HOnestly no Spamming here - just wanted your opinion. I was really pleased with the work I had done, and then my wife kinda took the wind out of my sails a bit, so wanted to get some more opinions.
The finished site is here - no worn look anymore. The client changed his mind. My wife now likes it, but still has critisism - she says the colour of the boxes on the right is to bold and distracting. THe client loves it, which is the main thing, but wanted to get your opinions on it

Cheers

Hey, Chris, sorry it took me so long to get back to you. The link was in your earlier message - I went to add it in and noticed it hat IMG tags around it. DOn't know how that happened
This looks really good. It's still got that retro feel which is really unique and attractive. It definitely sets a mood right off the bat.
I am having a bit of trouble with the logo/name across the top. It's a little too hard to read. The sharp-edged letters, the line below the words and metallic styling are a little overpowering. The B especially is hard to make out. That could be an A or an R or a B! You could try simplifying that area a bit to see if it becomes more legible.
I also think that the navbar could use some work. It's pretty boring in comparison to the rest of the design. Take a look at the one I did on my site - its simple and easy, standards compliant (all CSS), and as attractive as graphics! I hope people don't mind me bringing that up all the time but I do think it's a really good solution for navigation on a lot of levels I got the code from A List Apart so you could look there too
I'm not sure that I like that porftolio application. It seems a little overly complex considering that these are just photos. A simple gallery script might work better.
Oh, one more thing - the contact form isn't lining up right in Opera.

Cheers Megan,
THe logo is nothing to do with me, so it has to stay.
I have to say I like th esimplistic navigation, I really dislike overpowering navs - I believe that they should point you in the right direction, and then the content takes over.
My nav bar is also clean, very simple, and 100% standards compliant.
The site is too, apart from the crap that the yahoo hosting adds to the pages. My code validates, yahoo's doesn't. It's incredibly annoying
You don't like the slideshow? I love it - it's slideshowpro, and fantastic extension for flash mx2004. The idea from the client was that he wanted to portfoio that felt like he was flicking through the TV.
I tried in vain to get the form to line up in opera. Then gave up. I've been checking the stats, and as of yesterday there wasn't 1 opera user, so I've decided to leave it.

Hi there chris_bcn, welcome to the forums
Firstly you have validation errors in your CSS and HTML so, you might want to fix those.
When it comes to sites who use repeating background images, they looks really ugly and doesn't fit in. With your site however, it works very well together with what you have.
There isn't really much to say about this design because I think it looks really good.
But just to be really picky, on your portfolio page, the email that you have there on the side is overflowing so try reducing the font size on that might help a little.
Also, the copyright symbol you have at the bottom isn't aligned with everything else, probably just moving it to the right a little would make it look a bit better
Apart from the above, I don't have anything else to nit pick about your site. It shows that you have taken a lot of care and time to make this website.
Keep up the great work

This is a great looking site. Reminds me of the old days and that film, PleasantVille.
The only biggy I have with this site is as was previously pointed out - The Font in the header. Its very ineligible. My companys graphics designer would have a field day with that one.
I do my own graphics for my own sites and my employers sites to take the load of the graphics guy. But he has to verifiy it and he always has somthing to say about fonts lol.
Apart from that tho the site is groovy
8/10!

Thankyou very much - the logo is unchangeable - he got it made for $45, so that tells you the quality of the designer. I offered to ake a new one, but I'm not doing it for that price!
He wanted to have a retro feel, first I did site with a worn look, but I think he thought it was a bit too retro, so I went for retro/modern instead
You need to scale the text size quite large before the email overflows, which I hadn't done - however, some people will, so thanks for the heads up on that.
I moved the copyright symbol into the green area, but it caused a gap to appear, and deadline was fast approaching, so it was comprimise time! The client hasn't said anything, so when I have time I I'll go back and fix it.
The validation errors come from stuff that yahoo (the hosting services) puts on the page - I have to see about changing that. The CSS validation tels me I need to validate my XML document first! ARGHH!
Thanks again for all your comments. I'm toying with the idea of going freelance full-time, so any advice is valuable! Just got to find out if there's enough work, and i have enough talent to compete... vamos a ver

True, but I doubt that my client will want to pay me to redo the logo.
The client is happy, and he doesn't want to spend anymore money, so I'll move onto the next project, and deposit my cheque!
My slideshow broke today for some reason, so I'm having to rely on an old HTML version, so it might ook a little funky while I rejig the site about

Seeing as I should have been sleeping two hours ago, this is a quick first-impression critique.
On the main page there are three things that jumped out at me:
Box 1 - It should be "Francois", not "Francios" perhaps? And it seems that there is an uneccessary line break after "reminds you". Check this!
Box 2 - Too many font-types in the agent info. You have underlines, italics, and boldface going on, sometimes in combination with eachother, making it look very patched-together! I think everything after the "by:" should be straight plaintext with exception of the linked email. Line breaks are enough to denote the different details, in my opinion.
Box 3 - Poor Lois Tema. Her logo doesn't show up well on the light background. Perhaps spend 5 minutes cleaning up that image?
I don't have time tonight to explore the site, but it does look very good. Perhaps add the "text-align: justify" attribute to large bodies of text. It gives sites a cleaner, polished feel.
And with that, off to bed!

I think the site looks great
however the logo at the bottom left hand corner on the home page seems hard to read.

The site looks good, but that combover doesn't.
I'm liking layout a lot, nice stuff.

Cheers for the comments. The photographers logo is definately a problem - the only copy I have is appalling quality, and efforts to touch it up haven't really worked. I think I'l lose the image all together, and go with plain text.
the combover never works really, but we shouldn't mock - could be us in a few years! Shudder!
