www.gamespage.net - any ideas?
Hi,
I am making a new massive diectory (mainly for games, but maybe i will add more categories) I've got the templates all done and php, what do you think i could do to improve it?
Any ideas and any critiques would be most welcome

Chas - I'm just heading off to lunch but I'll take another look when I get back.

Okay - at first glance this wasn't bad. When I saw gaming I sort of expected something dark and black but this is more bright and cheery which I like. The orange colour scheme could be motivating to your visitors.
In general I'm not a huge fan of really compartmentalized layouts like this. Everything is in its own litlte box, with a background colour, border, and chunky header. I would take out some of those dividers and make things flow together a little bit more. Especially in the content area.
The design could also use some work around the top. The logo is too light and fuzzy looking in comparison to the more rigid look of the rest of the layout. That should be re-worked. Also, the tabs look somewhat out of place - they sort of fade back out of the way because they haven't been styled in the same way as other elemnts. Those should probably blend in more with the orange bar there.
Looking around - something needs to be done with the links so they are more identifiable. In order to get people deeper into the site the clickable elements need to be more obvious. Even the tabs don't have very good hovers on them, and the game listings in the middle are styled just like plain bolded text so it's hard to tell that they're links.
When I found a game to click on, I only got a page with a description. What next? I couldn't see any download links or anything. I clicked on the name again, just guessing that it might take me somewhere - that gives me more details about the game but I still don't see a download link or anything. Finally I take another guess and click on the title again which brings me to the developer's site. It should not be nearly this hard to figure out how to access the actual games. Too much information here, not enough action.
Not a bad start though

Uhmm...this is set up just like http://hotscripts.com, just with a different color scheme. I'm guessing you're using the same system? Anyway, the header is way too unnoticeable. It needs to stand out. Also, you could use some sort of logo as well.
The headers on each individual box aren't the greatest. The text doesn't stand out enough. Perhaps even just making it bold would help. It was fairly easy to navigate for me, anyway, because I have used HotScripts quite a bit, but you have to think about your visitors. At least have a 'Help' page set up so confused visitors can figure out how to navigate the site. Right now your FAQ only has two questions.

Yeah, that looks exactly like hotscripts.
I think that the boxes in the middle should be aligned to the left, get rid of that sponsor banner on the left. Then you should make the sponsor boxes on the right closer to the content boxes, maybe 50 or so pixels away.
The header is really empty, you should come up with a better logo. It doesn't stand out enough.
The text in the middle boxes should be bigger and bolded.

Yes it is a bit like hotscripts, is it some sort of software you have got your hands on (i could do with something like that). I could sugetst to not have allthe headers facing the same way, point the right header to the right and the left header to the left.
I want to build something like this any good tutorials or tips you know of.

Nice website but i think you need to inprove the design, the header is very poor.

That looks very similar to hotscripts, especially the directory.
Sounds bad but I'm finding this design quite boring, although I agree with Megan about it not being dark - this is a redeeming feature.
The logo/banner is very washed-out and doesn't draw the eye to it, since this is the biggest clue to what the sites about (along with the URL) it should be more prominent.
Some of the typography on this site is terrible, the box headers are too "weak" and a bad colour, as are the tabs.
I'm getting a horizontal scrollbar at 800x600.
Am noticing that when there is quite a lot of content the box background isn't repeating in a flowing way (e.g. the About page). It appears these boxes never meant to be over a certain height, try making the background images flow better to fix this.
There's nothing to differentiate this from so many other - better established - sites out there, you're up against some big competition unless you know something I don't?

I don't have much more to add except that I think the orange header bits look odd as they just seem cut off on the right.

I would checkout other game sites and see what works for them.
