suggestions welcome
Long time since i posted in this catergory. Anyway, could someoone take a look at www.javaplace.co.uk/new site and tell me what they think? I don't care if the design isn't original but I do care if it doesn't look good. I was thinking of maybe grey mouseover links (css things) or maybe white. Not sure. The links will take you to my current design which is going down very soon so don't worry about them. Thanks.

1) Eww, I don't like it at all. I'll start with the logo: it needs color and pizzaz. I also don't like the font you used. How about a a logo symbol or something?
2) The colors are- yuck. Those two blues look good together, but not with the grey background. Find a new bg color.
3) Make some type of mouseover color change for the links. Also- add bullets next to each link, and move it away from the border.
4) I would re-think the design and layout of the site. 'Cause right now it looks like each framed cell is a seperate part of the site. Maybe experiment with one border around the whole site.
I don't like it much, and I would re-think most of the site...

Although i might not be as harsh as justin and start off with a "eww", i think maybe you should think about at least touching up.
1)Rollovers could help a lot like you said you were going to do.
2)Logo as justin commented is not all that great.
3)The text in the middle needs to come in more so it doesnt lay up against your border. Doesnt look really good!
4) Maybe more colors other then blue. I mean i admit, i like blue and use it alot, but try and put some other colors in there too.
Um thats it for now.

First new is spelled new not knew.
I take Justin's opinion. I don't like it at all.
First is the logo. It blends in to much with the background. I don't like the crookedy edges either. The colors are ugly. Just read Justin's and you will know what I think.

Any ideas for a secondary colour to go along side the blue?
As for the logo, I really don't have the tools to make a better one. I'll post in the jobs forum later for a logo maker guy.
I have the text come away from the edge of the tables but that is offline at the moment. i have also made the rollovers but will make the colour of them the secondary colour for the site.
Thanks and keep criticising!

Hey Minton I will do you a logo in replacement for a link on your page!
You can have a look at my stuff at cybercult.net and go to ~Vy~ Art!
Wait until you have the colour scheme sorted out though!

The logo on your old pages looks really good. Why can't you just use that one and change the colour scheme on the new design to match it? Blue, IMO, is rather overused on the web. It's kind of a standard... boring. Using orange and red would really make your page stand out.
The main problem with this design is that the organization of those boxes on the page. If the navigation table and the content table lined up with each other it would probably look better. A contrasting accent colour would be a good idea (orange or yellow would work).
Also keep your content a little bit away from the edges of the tables. It makes it hard to read when there's no padding in there.

Changed parts of the site you have suggested. The mouseover links seemed to work better offline but now you can hardly see the change in colour. Any ideas as to what that colour should be?
Thanks

I would make the rollovers yellow to go with the yellow title bars.
It does feel like three totally seperate sections - they should be combined somehow. I also don't like the banner ad right in the middle.
As for the logo - use the yellow to really make it stand out.
I see that you gave the text some padding - but it could use just a bit more.
