Softball redesign
Hi y'all. I'm redesigning the look of an existing softball information site. No links on the new design work yet so I'm just looking for overall impressions on whether I'm going in the right direction with the new look.
The old site was darker and had a more "serious player" tone with that fireball... but looked flimsy to me. The new design is brighter (but is that a good thing or is it not tough enough?) and bolder. Also, my old site had a long navigation menu trying to list everything at once and my new one is going for simplicity.
Well here's the current site as is (a beta version, but still live)
And here's my new design. (simpler, bolder, brighter)
QUESTIONS:
I've mixed a two column table on top with a three column table at the bottom. I've tested on several screen resolutions on IE5 and NS7. Is the design holding up structurally for all y'all?
How's load time? Any problem?
How do I get rid of that white space at the very bottom? If I used standard html img tags I could use vspace="0" but since I made the bottom row out of a CSS background, I can't figure it out.
Please comment on my color scheme. Ignore the main content area because I just copied that off my other page. Specificly, the teal background and header bar. Does the light blue menu clash with the greens?
Sidebar: My template validated but the main content area didn't. 36 of the 38 errors I get are due to the code given by my weather and news scripts which uses "&" and "=" symbols in their URL's. Any way to fix these or is it hopeless to validate so long as I use those scripts.
Thank you everybody in advance.

I could see both pages when I clicked yesterday, but can't get to it now. Sure you're not viewing from cache? Perhaps your host changed DNS or some such?

Looks good in firebird, the remake is better but I don't know, maybe missing something, but not sure what (yeah I know, a big help lol). My eyes are drawen to that bat, maybe it's the bat is doing it, or rather not doing it, perhaps replace the bat with a row of small thumbnails (pictures of the month type thing). Shouldnt the bat (if used) be under the welcome text anyway? the welcome text isnt news, nor is the weather, yeah so maybe just move the bat above the news text (in left column) and move welcome text up. Not sure how much text you'll have there but might not be a good idea to have it all bold, maybe just the first sentence as an attention grabber or something.
I like the banner but think the background of it spoils it, the blur doesn't fit (is meant to be a ball skin isn't it), also the text is a lil fuzzy.
I was going to say something about the green bit where the ball is coming around from, but after looking at my map of USA (have one beside me) I realised it's North and South Carolina. Since it's a USA based state thing I wouldnt worry about identifying it better. yeah, umm, so just ignore this last paragraph

Well I would definatly say that you have achieved the cleanliness look with the new site.
Are the navigation links up the top ment to work?
Try going for a bigger article heading font size. Also having it underlined makes it look most like a link than a heading.
Also, the images on the right take away my attention from the main content - the articles.
Overall, the site is maybe a bit too simple and lacks any real design. Can't really pin point it. It looks as if its amost there but not quite... :S

I think both color schemes are pretty good actually. However, for baseball I think you the second one works better. Also, the layout of the content is a little more direct with the new design. The site is very clean, and the navigation is well thought out.
This is a site that anyone could logon to and enjoy immediately. With the old design, it would take a little more reading before you figured out just what you are looking at.
The graphics used on the site are nice, and the game day weather over on the right is a nice professional touch.
I really like it!

I like the new site. Appears to be much more crisp and clean looking. I like the new colors too =)

Colours: you've got red, green, blue (all bright, medium hues), and teal. There just doesn't seem to be an order or reason to that combination. Green, blue, and teal, for example, is a problem. You need to adjust that and I can't explain how. Going bright is fine, but the colours still need to relate to each other and there should still be a neutral to tie them together (and neutral doesn't have to be grey or black. Navy would be a good choice.) Start with a base colour and build from there.
I also think that you could go bolder with the top design. Tne logo text could be chunkier and the navbar could be more substantial. The ball photo is nice but doesn't seem to be the best thing to have at that position. That's the spot that people are going to look at first. I would remove that, possibly reposition it in the content area somehow. The logo with the state graphic and the ball around it is good.

Ok ok I know I am told I am weird for browsing the internet at 1600x1200 with IE completely maximized, but, depending on what resolution you are working on right now, you might want to find a friend with a high resolution so that you can see the site from a different perspective. When I viewed it, the 'Full Story' links looked like they went with the Game Day Weather and the pic below it. Just check it out sometme and perhaps you will consider a couple changes to your tables.

Thanks everybody. I agree with points that the photo in the corner doesn't seem right, nor does the blue colored nav bar match the rest of the site. So I redesigned a few mocks that I'd like opinions on. (Here's a link to the previous version again )
I kept the photo but blended it in and made the site name bigger and underlined it. But trying to go with a green bar instead of blue now blends too much with the logo on the right (North and South Carolina).
Same but now with a red bar, figuring a softball has red laces (which is why I outlined the name in red in the first place).
Finally I swapped to a green background but now I think it looks like a Christmas card. Seems worse to me now. I think the middle graphic was best.
Thanks,

You mean those graphics didn't show up on this page? Wierd. My host and I checked several possiblities but could find anything wrong. That's still bothersome that many people have this issue. Sorry about that.

Not the graphics... the server itself couldn't be located. No load at all.
