I have been working on a new site, still not quite ready but I hit a bit of a snag and so thought post it to get some feedback and see if someone can assist with my problem.
I have a function that generates the main menu and the links along the bottom of the page. Depending on the page requested it highlights the menu item as active. The problem is this, if I use

  • home everything works fine, but the code won't validate because the id is used twice on the page. If I change to a class it vladates but don't work. Any ideas.
  • Oh and one more thing, can you set a background color and an image? eg. if I wanted to have a div with another div inside it at one end can I set a no-repeat image at the other end and also set the background color?

You can find the site at new slickfish

Very good looking site. A professional image is established immediately. Any other modifications you do to your site will be our of personal preference and not something that is important for useablity.

I like the look and feel of your layout, clean, yet complete.
The bottom navigation looks out of place though. maybe run the blue strip across the whole bottom.

The inner pages also seem to be cramped, everything tucked together in the center, use the space more, your portfolio page for example has about 3 words wide max, spread it out to at least 5 words.

The above was with mozilla (firebird), took a look with IE6 incase it was a compatibility problem and you do have one, in IE6 there is a massive scroll bar at 800x600 (none in mozilla) and the bottom navigation is really small in IE6.
(back to mozilla) some pages it looks like your using 50% (or less), other pages maybe 75% of the screen width.

Your links, exmaple resources page, the sub heading ones are small grey bold but the content ones are text black and the bottom nav ones are blue bold. try keep to one or two styles of links and avoid text coloured links as this makes people hunt for links - if they stick around.
also found a typo, assit should be assist

I am still learning the are of webmaster, but I wanted to comment on your logo - I love it. Fits well with the color scheme as well. Cool.

Two-tone orange&black theme is simple, yet sooooooo professional.

Sweet portfolio. I'm a fan of sites that 1) are clean and 2) fit on one page. Again, I rage against clutter.

Can't go wrong with the Finding Nemo "mascot"!

The "Selecting a Designer" part is ballsy. Might lose business, might win trust through honesty. I like that.

very clean efficient design slick..will you do mine too? Just kidding. But If was looking for a web designer with a portifolio like that I would hire them. In this age of WYSIWYG design, we all think we but be webmasters but then everynow and then people like you remind us that design is about form and function.

Hi, syawilim, I got your PM and I'm here to review your site (major project finished up! More time for reviews Smiling)

This looks really cute, I like it a lot Smiling The logo is good and I like the way the hook comes down. I adore the little fish and the colour scheme is one of my favourites. One thing you could do to coordinate that a little better is to make your text a dark blue instead of black. Same with the "fish" part of the logo.

I also think that the navigation menu could use some work. The colours don't seem to be the same hues as the blue used in the fish picture. Use an eye dropper to pick colours directly from the fish pictures, so they match exactly. The on state especially looks out of place. I would also try to space those out a little more so it has more impact.

Browsing around the site, you need some serious help with your grammar. Remember that writing on the web is not the same as writing in print. You need to keep things shorter and to the point. People need to be able to get a good impression of what you're talking about on a quick skim, rather than being forced to read every word.

Some glaring errors on the "Web Site Packages" page:

    1. Sentences here are treated as paragraphs. On the web, sentences should not be nearly long enough to resemble paragraphs.
    2. Numbers lower than 9 should be written out in full (nine not 9).
    3. Avoid using your company name to start a sentence since it does not start with a capital (this one is more of a style issue). Actually, I would argue that it is not neccessary to keep the "slickfish" coloured and lower case when used in text. Colouring it makes it stand out and it detracts from the rest of the text.
    4. Bulleted lists are a good way of presenting a list of items (such as components of a package). Makes it easy to skim and get a sense of what is offered.
    5. company's colours (not companies colours)
    6. Lists should have bullets. No need to take out the bullets unless you're styling a menu or something like that.

Overall this is a really good job. Grammar and text edditing is something that is commonly overlooked by a lot of designers but not by clients. Go over the text and shorten your sentences and have someone proofread for you.

beautiful site. i love the fish image.

the only thing that i dont like is the rollover colors for the menu. i think instead of changing to orange the text should stay the same color or a darker color. just personal preference though. i really like the layout.

Thanks for the feedback Megan.....always good!
The colour thing....working on that, thanks for responding to the other post.
And the copy....I have always been a little concerned with that so will take onboard your comments and look at tidying that up.
