Site Check: tabletconnect.com
I am working on a Tablet Pc website where people will be able to come and download the latest updates, files, applications, or look at info pertaining to particular Tablets. I am just working on the basic layout and color scheme, and I was wondering if you guys/gals could check out my current layout. Any comments are appreciated.
I currently have Two options. The first one I was my first attempt, and I was told my logo was to CARTOONISH, so I tried a second version. They are both similar, but with subtle differences

Here is the new layout

Let me know what you think of the layout, colors, ect..
Thanks
Bryan
the website will eventually be tabletconnect.com

Hmm, thats strange, they work for me. I have tried them on other computers on different networks.
Maybe you should try them again.
Tabletconnect.com won't work.
That is another thing. I don't understand how DNS servers work. I put down the 3 authoritative servers with my tabletconnect domain with godaddy. Its been 3 days. How do those 3 servers KNOW where my tabletconnect.com domain is. Here is why I am confused. Every person at my university has a user name. Mine is bk38, as the sites above show. So all users have a certain amount of space they can use for their name regarding website space. So there are roughly 2,500 versions of homepages.evansville.edu/?? or whatever. How do those dns nameservers know whether to go to my bk38 or someone elses? Maybe there is something more. Maybe that is why tabletconnect.com doesn't resolve anything.

I quite like the overall feel of the sites and I think that version 2 is better for the logo/header but I feel that it is too squished up just in the corner. Couldn't you extend it across the whole top section and reposition the news ticker under the affiliate ads? On;y other thing that strikes me at the moment is to get an accent colour in there that isn't blue just to warm it up a bit.

Personally, I like the original logo better.
One thing that kind of bothers me in both versions are the "button-like" headings. I kept having an impulse to click them
Otherwise, it is nice looking, in an applish sort of way

Well, isn't that ironic - apple-ish look on a PC site.
What I don't like about this is the way the logo is rounded off in that corner there. It seems really out of place for some reason. The styling isn't consistent with the other 3D shapes on the site (rounder corners, lighter edges, different shape). I think I prefer the angled shape you've used on the first design, although the white cutout on that one isn't as good as th flat blue on the second one. Or maybe the header area should go all the way across somehow..
There are a couple of problems in Opera, particularly with some weird vertical lines showing up on the login box.
Anyway, I think that's all I have to say. I like the bevelled buttons here - a lot of the time they tend to look cheesy but not here.

You have made a good point Megan. It never connected in my head of the irony of my site. I wasn't meaning to make it look applish, but I guess it turned out that way.
I got confused by one of your comments. Sorry. here are the ones I was confused with.
"What I don't like about this is the way the logo is rounded off in that corner there."
Which one?
With the opera, I don't know why that is doing that also. That is strange. I have some CSS going on with the Login box, but it should only effect the background color of the buttons, text boxes, borders and that should be it.
Are you recommending that I should make it a Flexible site? Like putting the logo across the entire top
Thanks for your comments everyone.

I just think that the way the logo is stuck in the corner like that makes the whole page look unbalanced. I think it would be better if that header area (the blue part) spanned the width of the layout - so that it would be as wide as everything else put together. Does that make sense? You could either do a flexible width design, so it fills the whole browser window, or center the layout table in the middle of the screen. I think the latter would be a better option here, because those navigation buttons would probably look lost in space at high resolutions in a flexible design.
Oh, and while I'm at it - those content boxes you have for "main" and "special deals" should be the same width.

I prefer the first attempt, the graphic on the second one is much less interesting. Perhaps the first version has been labeled 'cartoonish' because if you look at the tablet the right way, it looks like a face is drawn on it. Also you may want to look at changing the transition between the smooth 3-d graphic and the 2-d picture inside. Make it more abrupt, or less perhaps?

Thanks PMJ,
I am confused a little by the following statement
Could you explain that a little better.
I am not sure whether I will end up using either of the two designs, since they do look APPLISH

You've got that cool 3-d curved object in the top left corner of your page, and then there's a picture with a white background plopped on top. It just didn't look quite right to me. Maybe if the picture's background wasn't pure white, like the page itself? Maybe if the 3-d border around the white image was more pronounced, or less? Just a suggestion.
They don't strike me as being particularly Apple-ish, then again I'm a Windows user.

I like the design. Nice and clean with a definite color and style theme going on. I don't think the first logo is bad but it feels too "separated" with the white box inside it. Plus the brands on the right of the logo don't pop enough. I think the second logo is more in tune with your theme and looks more professional. Another thing I like about the second design is the three columns. I don't know why because they're just affiliate logos over there, but it just seems to work better space-wise.
