Rough Layout Critique
Can I ask for that here?
I threw it together... really am just honing in on what kind of layout I want to use... haven't incorporated any graphics and am not sure I'll be sticking with the current colors.
I would like anyone's thoughts and suggestions. Does it load fast? Is it obvious what is available for one to do? Too little/much description for the links?
Here's alda b.designing! (so far)

In Opera 6 I am seeing a big hunk of empty space at the top - so only the first line and the navigation options are visible way at the bottom of my screen. I don't know what happened there. The white space is also much narrower than it is in IE (And I think it looks better with less white).
You really don't need to have those explanations there - it really should be quite obvious. Since this is "alda b. designing" then obviously the "print" section would show your print design work, "web" for your web work etc.
I think the logo should be larger in comparison to the navigation. I also think that there is no need for two navigation bars here. I tend to prefer the one at the top. That way it kind of recedes into the background of the design but is still there if needed. It'll make more space in the lower part to show off your work.
Without the left navbar, though, that white space may be a little too wide at higher resolutions. Maybe go with a fixed width layout in the center of the page. I think this will look even better with some dark space on the sides as well. Either that or keep the white area relatively narrow (like 1/2 page height), centered in the middle of the page. Then you could have sort of a gallery effect.
I look forward to seeing what this looks like when you get your graphics in.

I like it as is, maybe a simple logo just to top it off.
It displays the same in Ie5 and Netscape4.7 except in netscape there is a white section after the black section ends, could just be from small content length as its ok on the web page. Also the orange box behind the links doesnt work in Netscape4.7 (which is a good thing )
I also noticed you have " Nov.06.01 " in dark grey in the bottom black section, can only just make it out, has no other text around it (apart from your email address on the other side), if its the date your a month and 2 days out, if its your last updated date then you should mention that (not that its needed) but really needs a lighter color.

Not too bad. It just needs some content but I guess that will come. A couple of things....
You need a logo really bad. That plain text at the top is too drab but I'll bet you are working on that.
The light blue that you have for the e mail address in the bottom left corner doesn't look good to me. It sort of stand out too much or something. Colors don't match. I like the idea that you have going on here though. Keep goin!!

It definietly needs a logo, it can be that colour but do it in a unique font as a graphic and that'll give that top part some life.
I do agree with Megan that you should stick to the top navigation only and make the layout so that it doesn't stretch - at least the white part anyway.
Looking forward to seeing some more content on there, it'll be easier to critique then as well.
Can you help us out and review some of the other sites posted here for critique as well please

To everyone! What a great response. I'll repost once I've made significant changes.
Webmistress - I'd be more than happy to help out. It looks like my post was taken out of a different thread in another forum and reposted here. I had not yet visited this area.
Thanks everybody!

It's always hard to give a critique when there is no content, which in this case I'm hoping is going to improve the look of the site as without it it is, I'm afraid to say, very boring. It's too blue and sparse, I quite like the logo (I think, can't make up my mind) but there is absolutely nothing to grab your attantion. I still think it looks too stretched and even more bland at larger resolutions. Maybe put some content in and some graphics and then I'll look again.

Yes, too much of a big hunk of white. I do like that font you've used on the logo. It kind of gives a funky, almost retro look. Try to go with that style. Really take it and go with it. I think that a lot of web designers are afraid to really embrace a style and go all out - we can be too conservative that way I think.

looks ok .. .bit dark though.. maybe make it a bit brighter... You could round the corners on the white table to make it blend in a bit better, A role over on the buttons would look nice! just to add something to because its pritty simple right now!..
