RewardsLookup.com - first website

Okay, be gentle. It's my first attempt at doing a website from scratch (I maintain one at work).

Ignore the lack of content and functionality -- and all the "under construction" pages -- for the moment, and let me know what you think of the basic layout and concept. I know it may look amateurish, but I want to focus next on content and functionality, then return to design.

The idea with the rainbow is that the site will cover the "spectrum" of rewards programs, and I'm working to get the headers in the various tables to echo the colors of the spectrum above. I have left space above the rainbow for future banner placement.

Any ideas for making the logo more interesting are welcome. It seems kind of "flat", but I'm no graphic artist...making the sides of the triangle fade from one color to another (did that this morning) has really helped, though.

Also, do I need to cover anything else in the "legalities" section? My job is in the industry, so I want to be very careful about sticking to public knowledge and remaining impartial!

Thanks!

Since this is your first site i give your props It has a lot nicer layout then most people on thier first web site attempt. I do not exactly like the color scheme you got going though. Especially the rainbow stuff at top. If you want a rainbow effect use all sorts of colors maybe within a design. The bar across the top really doesnt say much or present much about your site. Im not sure really what it does...If you could work on the logo and top part you would be off to a great start. You are still off to a great start

Well, I figured I needed to put *something* there, otherwise the site would be virtually all text...which would be really boring! I was thinking that I needed some sort of theme, so that's what I picked.

I'm not "wedded" to the idea of a spectrum, so will entertain any other ideas to decorate my pages!

Thanks for your nice (and helpful) comments!

Yes, the logo needs to be redone. I think that should be your first step - get a good logo and work from there. Some ideas:

  • look at dingbat fonts - find a dingbat that suits your site and use it with text (your title)
  • find a unique font and create a graphic title
  • use a rainbow texture effect on a graphic title (get Paint Shop Pro - it's free for 30 days and there are lots of tutorials available online - ask in the graphics forum for help). I like this idea best - choose a unique font, make it rainbow coloured, bevel it. You've got a nice, simple, google-like logo (http://www.google.com - something like that would be good).
  • if all else fails, get someone to do it for you (try the jobs and barter forum)

This looks like a good idea for a site, and your navigation is good. A couple more things:

  • don't link to pages that just have an "under construction" sign on them. Just take out the link tags until you're ready with the content
  • your navigation headings should fit all on one line. It makes things hard to figure out, and I generally think that navbars look better when all of the headings are about the same length (ie. "Links to other helpful sites" should be just "links")
  • make your logo a link to the home page
  • table backgrounds are wonderful things

A couple of changes, thanks to the suggestions here. I put some text in the rainbow (a little "catch phrase" describing the site's purpose), and shortened some of the links in the nav bar. I think I'll play with the table widths to see if I can get them lined up better, i.e. one line each.

The "construction signs" are just there temporarily so you all can see where I'm going with this; they will be gone before I start any sort of *real* publicity.

Oh, and the logo is now a link to the home page.

Mostly what I'm looking for right now are quick-to-implement ideas to make my site more "presentable" while I finish the database programming. Then I'll come back and really try to polish it up! I'm finding this whole business to be a lot more involved than I imagined when I started...it's hard to know what order to tackle things!

Thanks again!

Remove that colorful title image of yours and shorten the page's width. I'm on 800x600 and I can see the scrollbar on the bottom of my IE5.

Regards.

1) The main problem with your logo/title bar. Why rainbow color? And why is there that box up there that says miles points? I thought the name of the site was RewardsLookup? If so, then either get a good graphics program and learn how to use it, or pay someone to make you a good one. I would get rid of what you have right now...

2) The rest of the site has a very clean, basic design which works well. I would just say a) maybe add some type of bar between the menu and main content area, and b) make the alink, vlink, and link colors all the same.

It's just the logo which you need to fix...

Yea, the site is a little bland but maybe to fix that up you could put a background in.
Like just to cover the navigation part of the site.
Also the rainbow image needs to go.

Im using netscape 6 and thee isnt a bottom scroll bar.
I think you should make a better logo. Without the black outline, unless you use that in other areas of your site. Overall it is a very good start though.

Changes made today:

Logo - added the domain name and some shadowing to make the triangle appear less "flat"

Spectrum - reduced to a narrow bar under the catch phrase

Page Layout - made the whole thing more narrow (700 vs 760 pixels), and widened the nav bar so that none of the link descriptions requires more than one line

Links - stay blue after visiting

Thanks to all for the great suggestions! Keep them coming!

If you're going to use absolute table widths, you should really set it to 600 or so, just so you don't leave those people out (there are still people browing at 640 x 480!) Either that or use percentage widths.

Well, that logo doesn't look any better. It's good to have your site title in there, but since yuou seem to have just resized the triangle graphic, it's looking very fuzzy now. I would probably get rid of all of that, and just use your site title with the rainbow texture (bevel that).

That top part of the page still needs a lot of work. What I would try, just for a simple solution, is to put your header and future ad banner in a table with a coloured background. Put the rainbow below that. Then put a coloured background in your navigation cell too. I think that would give the page more visual structure. Just be careful with the colours you choose.

Jeez, I hate it when I compulsively start working on other peoples sites just to see what would look good! YOu know you're procrastinating when. I tried the suggestion I had earlier for the log - kinda like google's with a rainbow gradient. It looks alright. That's all I'm going to say - it's your site!!!
