review request: zachdexter.com & the forums
hey,
i have a personal site at http://zachdexter.com. right now, it's just a general site - not much going on atm. any suggestions for it? and how can i reduce the size of the enormous, gigantic background picture?
also, please take a look at the forums i have set up.
general discussion forums: http://zachdexter.com/forum
outdoor adventure forums: http://zachdexter.com/adventure
right now, i'm trying to get members to join the adventure forum. so if you'd like to discuss those topics, please sign up
i hope to create a drop-down box on the main page that allows you to choose which forum to login to - and also, when i get a chance, i'm planning to create a page where you select which forum to visit.
please offer suggestions etc.
thanks!

I like the site layout because its simple and easy on the eyes. You seem to have a decent amount of content too.

I really like that background picture. it's very striking. I don't think that the logo graphic really goes with it though. Lose the 3D look and try using the photo as a filler for the lettering rather than that weird texture. Also try pulling your colours directly from the photo. Things would blend together a lot better that way. It would be neat to see some of the orange from the mountains used elsewhere in the design.
Otherwise there's not much to say. I like the way you've integrated the main site design into the forums. You might want to try to get a more coordinating skin for those. There's all kinds on the phpBB site, or you can get the source files and create your own.

ok. i've got a simple, light blue text logo now - transparent GIF. orange... good idea! that's incorparated into the heading stuff now.
as for phpBB themes... i've looked at every one, every single one (at least as of a few weeks ago) and i haven't seen a very good one to sort of match my design. maybe i should go through them again, lol.

You might want to blend the edges of the background some, at 1024x768, there was a seam down the page right that lined up with the N in your logo, kinda stood out to me.
Using Smart Saver Pro, I was able to get the background image down to about 33-35k in size, and still look fairly decent, especially concidering how much it will be covered up.
I liked the very clean simple layout, very appealing.

Nice background...Although it repeats which looks a little strange, is there any way of getting it to repeat in a more seamless way? Also the background file is a bit large, it could be optimised better.
The logo also looks very jagged - you need some anti-aliasing in there. Also the logo is very boring, it would be better if you chose a more unique font.
The vote button for the poll isn't appearing under the links page.
The code has a lot of junk in there - mostly commented out. It would also be a good idea to validate your code.
Those - very little - gripes aside the site is well built, clear and nice to look at - very nice!

ok. i'll try to get the images sorted out.
thx for the vote button problem, that's fixed.
i went to the code validation site and tried to validate through several different methods, but all i got were errors like this:
^
very confusing, and i just want to fix the errors and upload the new document. how's that done?
thanks.

The first thing that's missing is a valid DOCTYPE this describes to the browser and W3C validator what type of document you have written, in this case (and I haven't looked very carefully) it appears your site is written in HTML 4.01 Transitional, therefore your documents should all have the following as the first line of code:
Try running it through the validator now ...
The only shortfall with the W3C validator is that it isn't sentient and therefore can't always describe the errors in your document very well. Come back to us if you have any problems and I'm sure we can gude you through
That logo's much better now IMO...I like the inventive use of GIF transparency
