I like it, not much to say about the actual design and a nice amount of colour and images, although to spead things a bit the links at the top could be just text controlled by a stylesheet for hover etc. All works fine in IE5, NS6.2 & Opera6 but in NS4.78 there all sorts of layout problems and half the page doesn't load & then for me times out.
Julia - if life was meant to be easy Michael Angelo would have painted the floor....
Looks nice overall. The first thing I'm going to complain about is the colouring. The top header area looks nice. The problem is that the colours ued in the rest of the design don't coordinate with it too well. The header area has that muted yellow and purple colour, then the body area introduces bright red, blue, green, mint green, a different pale yellow etc. Try to unify things a little bit.
The second problem I have is the serach terms there. You have a box for price in dollar terms. Now, first of all, what kind of dollars are these? Canadian? Australian? Bermudan? Monopoly? That should be made clear. It would also be nice if you could search by the host's location or in different currencies. Some people may prefer to use a host in their own country. I also think that you should use a regular form submit button for that - it took me a minute to figure out what I was supposed to click.
Once I've done a search, again I'm seeing problems with colour scheme. There's a big ugly hunk of mint green there that does *not* look good. I would also be interested on some feedback about these hosting companies - some sort of quality rating system would be a nice addition.
Looking at hosting plan details. There are major problems with layout organization and colouring here. Once again, too many colours, too much white space above the fold, rather disorganized looking set of information.
Overall I just think that you need to unify your look a litte bit. That header looks really nice, so just take the colours from there and use them throughout the site. Avoid adding any extra colours if you can.
Looks very nice and neat in IE and in Netscape 6.2. Not sure if there are problems with previous versions as some posts above said so.
personally, I don´t like the green where it says, "Help - I don´t know.... It doesn´t seem to fit into the site. I would use the colors used at the top.
Apart from that, not much to complain about. Looks very nice and loaded quickly for me.
I would also say, nice look overall. I think that the home page is a bit too long. I am currently not a fan, although everyone else is of 'centric' (center-aligned) pages. Definitely fix the NS 4.7 problems. Here is an example:
Mark Irving I have a mind like a steel trap; it is rusty and illegal in 47 states
I think most of it said above, so I'll just mention a content issue.
You state you site gives a unbiased result, however all results it does give are your paying referers (they pay you for sign ups) as you mention in your FAQ section, I did a search for some common hosts and no results came up.
you stating unbaised is very misleading, I was very impressed with what you offered until I found this out.
The right hand column is on the hard edge in IE and Opera as well
I will take a hard look at some of the colors & that netscape 4.7 background problem has to be fixed.
To address the issue of being unbiased. We truly are 100% unbiased, but we have to have a revenue model - that model is a commission on sales. Taking a commission doesn't make us biased - we have the exact same structure for every host.
The advertising based hosting directories are truly biased- they have paid "recommendations" paid top 25 list etc - that is vey biased indeed. If it was being done outside the web,it would probably be illegal.
FindMyHosting doesn't allow any host to pay to be shown above another host - the results are related to what is searched for. So I don't think there is anything miss-leading about our truthful statement about being unbiased.
Right now we do have a limited amount of hosts in the system because we have just launched, but we will add more as we grow.
Thanks again for all the time taken to post feedback -I truly appreciate it.
quite a few changes have been made - just had to drop the background - netscape 4.7 shows the page background if a cell is empty - so there was no easy work around.
But, a lot of adjustment to the colors on the home page & search page.
The comments on this board have been really honest & very valuable feedback. Now - i must go and post reviews of other sites to return the favor.
the way around empty cells in NS4.7 is to add in the td cell this will show the background color.
are you using a spacer image before the price, platform ... ? if so add border="0" to the image tags and alt="" if your not using them
I am getting a really big horz scroll bar in Opera6 (as Opera6), I looked at your soucre code and your using td cells to freely (or rather your editor is), try put the top banner and links in one table, the top contents and search section on another and bottom section in the last (even thou the about section should have its own page) this will help speed up your page and make editing errors etc easier.
I couldnt find the error in Opera (just had quick look) but yse a validator like netmechanic.com or w3c.org or any of the downloadable ones (these are guides only, not to be considered the bible of html), I'd say you have a table error, maybe one to many td or tr tags adding a added section in Opera.
and in your hidden image link at the bottom of the page, add a alt="" to it so it doesnt appear
We made a whole bunch of additions and changes to FindMyHosting.com - especially in the look & feel. (Taking a lot of the suggestions from feedback in this thread).
We're going to start pushing the marketing in April - Press release etc. I'm glad we waited to get a lot of feedback before doing that - I think the site is better for it.
If you get chance to take a re-look & tell us if you agree (or not) that the site looks better - it's much appreciated
looking good, my only pick would be the length, or rather the sections. the first page could probably be cut off after the bookmark link, as the lower parts just seem to be put there interupting the flow.
The east search option will probably get everyones attention so people wouldnt venture any lower
FIRST PAGE:
I think it looks really nice. The first page may be a bit long. Is there any way you could put some of the stuff near the bottom on other pages?
In you code you have several empty font elements.
You will just have to pilfer through to find these.
Also saw one of the cheap.gif images that had an extra quote mark.
I am not sure about this but shouldn't that script that you have between the and come before the closing body tag?
In the first paragraph, independant should be independent
SECOND PAGE:
You have two body tags on this page. There are several empty div and font elements but I think this may be because you haven't entered all of your content for this page. You may want to double check to make sure you don't have any extra junk code hanging around.
PAGE THREE:
Mispelling; will take no more than a few minuites of your time
I didnt check the rest of you site for errors. The above will give you an idea of what to look for maybe. I found all these errors at NetMechanic while using their free html check. It comes in handy when you need to find extra clutter code and spelling mistakes. You might want to give them a try.
I didn't see the original but I think it looks great now. I'm looking for new hosting and I will use the search function which has already got results. I think the layout and intro are good. It would be good to specify what currency each plan is in as it can make a big difference with exchange rates.
