Hi all,

I have completed another website:

http://www.donclocks.org

Just a bit of background information; Don Evans, the artist in question, speciallises in cartoons on a global scale, having created Ronald McDonald amongst other things.

I know the site doesn't validate. I'm not to fussed about this, dispite normally using XHTML 1.0 Strict. Theming OSCommerce has been difficult enough without trying to make it validate.

Thanks in advance for any help

David

Cool Site, works well in promoting the clocks for sale... All I could suggest is making the contents justified, and add a little design flair at the bottom area to make it a little interesting... The navigation could be better...

What do you suggest I need to do for the navigation? Is it hard to use or just boring?

I personally think the yellow bar and clock are great, but far too large!!! Comparably, it comprises about 50% of the page's content - I would suggest reducing the size to half. Also, I feel that the text area needs some mild bounding. Even just a light yellow border with arounded corners would suit the page you have. Along with this, I feel the navigation links need a makeover. As a personal opinion/expectation I would like to see them possibly below the logo (maybe as part of the yellow bar?) and with some other style than the standard blue underline. Maybe use smallcaps and black font? I don't know, I'm just spewing out ideas at four in the morning after a night of drinking. Forgive me.

It does look quite good, though, but I think there's always room for improvement.

Thanks for the border tip. I have implemented it and you are right, it does make the difference. I also tried the links in small caps, and didn't like the effect, so that came out. Sorry.

Thanks for you help! Any more!

P.S. Does it work in Safari?

LOL Laura, drunken critiquing... Genius.

Although drunk you've got some good suggestions, the clock and yellow bar were a bit overpowering... In fact I'm still thinking the clock is a little large. The "DONCLOCKS" logo also doesn't seem to integrate with the yellow bar too well due to the white stroke, although I like the positioning Vs. the clock, that looks good.

The menu still needs work IMO, particularly disliked are the underlines, one suggestion is to move the text up and create a tab style menu. This could be done quite cleanly either with simple blocks of colour or if you're feeling adventurous have a look at Bowman's Sliding Doors of CSS article. Although something too flashy might conflict with the clean layout you have at the moment. Food for thought anyway Smiling

Very happy to see the XHTML Strict DOCTYPE there, until I tried to validate it Sad
Seems to be mainly due to an unclosed tag, Flash and some ampersands in the URL for your hit counter.

To validate: http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.donclocks.org%2F
For the Flash issue see A List Apart article: http://www.alistapart.com/articles/flashsatay/
As for the hit counter, I'd suggest reading what the validator has to say Laughing out loud

Overall it's a nice site, clean and easy on the eye. Just some coding issues to fix, another look at that menu and you'll be there.

Hi David,

I'm no web genius - but here's my suggestions...

1. Bring the on-line shop to the front of the site and integrate the biog stuff with it. The large space on the left handside looks like it is missing something - this would solve the problem.

2. Include more biog info about Don Evans - maybe a picture

3. More content - I haven't heard of Don before and want to feel that for £20.00 I'm buying a conversation piece and not just a fun clock.

4. As above, the clock logo is brilliant - but too large.

5. On the home page beneath the logo it says "AND MURALS", two points here: (A) where are the murals, and (B) this text disappears when you go to the other pages.

6 .Why is there an "Other clocks" page - this seems to serve no purpose.

7. I feel the page needs to be framed somehow - it's missing something that holds it all together.

8. When making the explorer window smaller the DONCLOCKS logo hangs out of the righthand side of the yellow box.

Hope that you approve of my comments and look forward to seeing how things develope.

All the best,

Matt.
