Review Request: Vendorfood

I am starting a new website dealing with information about street vendor foods around the world. I would appreciate if you could have a look and comment on scheme and concept. It is still in development stage.

black text on dark blue background is hard to read. good logo, but I would not make the .Com part uppercase VendorFood.com works to emphasize your site name not the ext. -Josh

There isn't anything but a forum? It's really hard to comment on the scheme and concept when there is only a stated intent.

The logo doesn't reflect the topic, it looks more suited to an upscale restaurant, not the charm of a street vendor.

Welcome to TWF blue27

Can you help out by reviewing some of the other sites here please.

I agree with what both of the above have said and I also use the same forum as you have and think that you need to make it look more appealing. Why go for blue? You could be much more creative with the logo and colouring.

Have to agree with the first two posts. The logo is very pretty, but doesn't seem appropriate for the topic of the site and the black on blue is hard on the eyes.

The forum is attractive and the color scheme is nice.

Let us know when you get some site content up.

no that aint right. gif loads slowly and text is unreadable (maybe i need a darker welding lens) if your website is about local food, id like to see a background image of a map with pushpin type deals locating "where the good vendors are" be it ficitious or real. need more food based pictures, dancing hot dogs would be cool or something, the site looks like a nature conservancy or wood veneer company page. -Josh

also maybe a side table with "vendor of the week" and a review written by someone about the quality of food, what is offered and typical cost and hours. that would be handy. -Josh

Thanks for the suggestions. I like some of these ideas. I have redesigned my theme from scratch. A lot of work in Photoshop and Fireworks MX. It's just a front page but I would like some input on the colors before I design a new forum template and start adding content. Thanks.

Hi blue27 Smiling

I didn't get to see the first one that you submitted so I can't compair.

I am not to crazy about that side bar on the left. It looks like it should be on a woodworking site IMO. Hate to sound harsh but that is the first thing that came to mind. Doesn't look "yummy" at all. The graphics are too "heavy".

Have you thought about putting the image of the vendor at the top and maybe incorporating the logo in with it somehow?

Better, but also agree with Sonia that it looks more woody than foody. It's much better having that picture on there, although I would put the picture to the right of the navigation with the text appearing maybe over the top of it so that it all fits on screen at 800*600 and have it fixed width as it stretches too far at larger resolutions IMO. Also maybe have 0 margins top & sids so that the navigation bar sits snug to the browser.

I agree what everyone is saying... the image just isnt right... you need to really push the traditional street vendor image... hot dog stands and things like that...

I think the logo is all wrong... it needs a hotdog or a hotdog cart or something like that on it... something a bit cartoony and funky... i'll try and find something and give you an idea what i mean...

How about something like this?

Its nice and simple, the site name is big and easy to read, and it really suits the subject matter.

If you like it, you can download the original fireworks .png file from http://www.nuzone.co.uk/wf/streetvendor.png

I hope i've been some help!

Are hot dogs universal street vendor offerings?!

I sincerely hope that's not the case.

What is common to street vendors all over the world? This is your premise, so you should be able to pull the common elements and use those to drive your design.

All vendors I've bumped into in North America and parts of Europe use metal, wheeled carts with heating elements and umbrellas, for instance, but the foodstuffs vary.

its true that not all street vendors offer hotdogs, but i bet if we asked 100 people what food you could buy from those people the majority would say hotdogs! Wink

The point i was trying to get at is that the logo should somehow represent the industry its about.

With the colors I'm trying to present an earthy tone. I'm not representing the food so much as the vendors themselves. My impression of vendors comes mostly from Caribbean and Central/South American sources and hot dogs are not on the menu in these places. If you've been to these places you know where the vendors work it is often not so bright and colorful and clean.
I am planning to do 3 different versions of the home page with a javascript to automatically redirect to the appropriate page depending on the users screen resolution. Is this a common practice?

size tables to 100% auto adjusts. i dont understand the purpose of your website. Is it to act as a chat community for food vendors or to list food vendors and gain ad opportunities through product positioning or? -Josh

I don't think it is common to redirect based on screen resolution and those sites that do annoy me as I have my screen set to 1152*864 but always browse at 800*600 browser size. Leave it up to the user and just design so it looks good at all sizes.

First of all Welcome to TWF Smiling If you haven't already, why don't your drop by the "Introductions" and introduce your self?

Right about your page, the first thing I notice is that in the title bar it says "New Page 1" ... you should change that to something else.

The buttons that you use for the navigation: What about if you moved it to the left a bit more and sort of "join" it up with that bit on the side and then make the buttons rollovers.

The picture of the two guys standing there with the stall at the bottom looks as if it's just been chucked in there, put it nearer the top under where is says Vendorfood.com.

kidding but i was using
marketing basics

reason- they are hungry
solution- website offers food vendor locations
my interest $- ads from major food vendors, or manufacturers

thats just how I would do it, clickable map, user based reviews so I dont have to do any research, maybe get some sort of promotional sponsorship, the "vendor of the week" gets their photo put up.

But i dont have the pulse of the page. however I wouldnt emphasize the lack of sanitation or dingyness of operating conditions. I would maybe look at getting all carribean or south american based vendors, categorize by locale and then link from hotel pages like places to eat or from tourism boards, but then im always looking to make $ not have fun with hypertext markup language. !-Josh
