REVIEW REQUEST: PSTV Alumni

[So I was going to ask everybody to review my new personal website but after reviewing three others, I thought "why not first get some reviews for the website I built over the summer. So I'll start with this one and review three more next month for my personal site.]

The site is PSTValumni.com

Background: PSTV is a college television station in upstate New York. A few years after I graduated I decided to create a website to help alumni of the program keep in touch. The site and my time is basically donated because I don't make money from it and it's all voluntary.

Website Comments: It's not very flashy but my main goals were functionality, usefulness, and usability. In 1996 this was my first ever website so after six years of being on Geocities, I decided to get it its own domain and hosting (at my expense) and I rebuilt everything from the ground up. Since I'm not a professional webmaster, I'm especially proud of myself for piecing together the directory section because I had no prior knowledge of either php or mySQL (which many of you helped me figure it all out, so Thank You.) (As long as I'm mentioning stuff, I'm also proud that it was all done in a text editor.)

So even though I don't plan on making any major changes for a while, I thought I may as well get some input/feedback on all my hard work.

Thanks Smiling

Good work! Wink

I have only two bones to pick with this design.

First, on higher resolutions, there's far too much red on screen, and it dominates everything. It can be distracting and become a strain on the eyes after a while. I suggest you try and tone it down a bit by selecting a less saturated shade, or by maybe applying that faded stripes effect you've used for the gray box on the home page to the sides of the red. Wink

Secondly, the width of the body area changes on the forum page. It's a little inconsistent. Maybe you should alter the phpBB template code and try and narrow it down a bit. Not such a big deal, really. Wink

Nice job - congrats

I have two bones two thou Wink
one is the red, very bright red screen until the page loads (quick flash of bright red on dialup)

and second is the lined grey section on homepage, makes the text a little hard to read

Code looks pretty tidy too, you should consider making a linked style sheet thou (.css file), makes future editing a lot easier. Good use of comments, doh, just noticed you're not quoting values and no width , height or alt tags on images
Indenting code (tabs) is your friend, can help in editing also.
I all ties together quite well, I'd probably of used a grey forum color thou
Congrats on nice job

That rule applies to the site, not to you (specifically) So you can go ahead and post another thread if you want - just not about the site that you're posting about here. This is just so that we don't get more than one thread talking about the same site.

Thanks. I could list my other site now but at this point half the pages say under construction. Maybe in a couple of weeks I'll have most of it ready for a grand opening. Laughing out loud

I agree with the others that the red is a bit too 'in ya face' and it makes the grey look too drab IMO and I find the text too small. Good job on the layout though.

I can't get any of the other pages to show anything so I can't comment on those pages.

All good points. Thanks.

The red was chosen because it's the school color but maybe I should darken the shade slightly.

And Abhishek Reddy mentioned the different width in the forum. Yup. I made the whole site with a header and footer and then when I installed the forum it didn't quite fit right in the constrained size so I had to make a new variable width table (which is now also used in the directory too). When I get around to fixing things up (like the colors) I'll switch everything to the variable width table to make it consistant.

Maybe go for the red of the text in the header part?

Was going to suggest the same thing. Try #CC0000 instead of #FF0000.

I agree on the bright red also. It's a bit too much.

I was a little unsure about the rounded corner on the left and square corner on the right but it is unique. Not too crazy about how you have the navigation in that little bitty box. Looks like it is sorta just "hanging out on a limb". Wink Not bad though....just bugs me for some reason.

Have you considered making the 9-11 ribbon at the bottom a little smaller? It looks big and lonesome down there with all that while space around it. Nice touch though.

Maybe a secondary set of nav links at the bottom would help fill the space. ???

It's now more than a month later and I've just begun to think about revisions on this site. I still plan on darkening the red color and some of the other changes mentioned earlier in this thread but right now I'm looking for some general layout advice on the front page.

Here's the current front page pstvalumni.com
And here's the alternate concept page pstvalumni.com/index2.php

I'm just looking for some advice on how to layout the content. I would change all that text over the red cells in a white font and ignore the little graphics I put in there for now. In general it just looks like a bunch of boxes to me. And several of the boxes end up with wasted space. Do I need to make the boxes more subtle? Are the red bars to big and distracting?

I'm also considering changing the left column so maybe I can put some of the thinnner content under the menu and make it a three column look with a lot more text in the middle. I'm just thinking out loud but let me know if anybody has any ideas for organizing the content in the main white area?

 On my geforce, uh, I think I'm having an epileptic seizure!
The bright red is very distracting.

Everything else looks good though.

Great idea and good user friendliness although i do have to admit to wearing sunglasses whilst viewing!!!A deeper tone of red would be sleeker, more inviting and less straining on the eyes.Smiling
