Review Request: Polygonos (a gaming site)
Hello all:
Please critique my site:
There is registration and a brief survey required to access the full content but some sections are open for all. Membership is free with the possibility to win a free game every month. My plan is to charge for membership which will allow extra content, email accounts, game server access and demo downloads as well as on cd format. I appreciate your feedback about this.
My other idea to generate income is to have someone partner with me to get companies to advertise on the site for the english version in US, UK, australia, etc. and in general to market the site in every aspect. Having quality content on the site is a full time job and these other activities are time consuming. If someone is interested and sees possibilities in the service please let me know or PM me.
Oh. I have submitted to all the SE's and have an account with submit net to improve meta tag, keyword, etc. Paid inclusion to Yahoo is a must I think but I have a low budget. But I am definitely considering it.
Thanks to all!

I think this is quite possibly the best looking gaming site I have ever seen (I'm not a gamer, but have reviewed many gaming sites here and in other forums). Great use of colour to overcome the very dark look that most gaming sites have. Also nice to see a break from the three column layout that is so common on gaming site. Excellent header graphics and navigation. Unique choice to put the nav on the right but I think it works well. I do think that some mouseovers on the top navbar would be a good addition, and I'm finding the page headers to be a little too small.
About generating income - I think your biggest hinderance here will be the competition - there are so many gaming sites out there that it could be difficult to get people to pay for yours when they could get the same thing for free on another site. That said, I'm not a gamer and can't give that mugh insight into your target audience. It may be worth the effort to do a quick survey of your target audience to gauge their willingness to pay for content.
Looking at the forums - I think that you should work on building a community before you start trying to charge for membership. It'll be easier to get people to pay if you've already built up a devoted audience.

nice looking site, again excellent top graphics - megan, i see mouseovers on the top links. Not much else to say from what Megan says above, i agree about making it established before charging, although what would happen to all the people who had joined it for free before the charges are made?

Thank you Megan and DaveyBoy:
Yes I think it came out really nice and I appreciate your comments.
Pay service: Registration is FREE. To have access to all the site's content, all you have to do is create an account, which is in fact a survey and people can just fill it out with bogus data if they want. The survey is intended to give me an idea of the users, tastes, age, etc. Now there is a GOLDEN membership or whatever I am gonna call it on which the users will get additional content but the best part is that they get email accounts, gameservers, ce roms and more opportunities to win games which is in fact what every gamer wants. The competitors ask for the same thing except they charge a lot of money for virtually nothing tangible in my humble opinion. Also there is a lack of spanish content and spanish users are growing fast!
Forums: Well it has been defficult to me to be able to get users to log in and create forum accounts, but I think it will eventually happen when the word spreads about the Free game contest, agree?
I have mouseovers, but they are not really flashy. I will look into it as well as the ALT tags on those to .gif buttons too.
Thanks again!

I'm not seeing them. Want to know why? Your script is doing a browser detection and only asks for Netscape or IE. I'm using a different browser, so I see nothing. Find a script that doesn't rely on an appname detection.

Or maybe you and the rest of the world should be sensible and use IE? I really dunno why people have to complicate matters.
Anyway, there should be plenty of scripts to do the job.

OK, that's way way to far for my knowledge....why don't youuse IE anyway I mean it's all Mozilla compatible right?? I will talk to my friend about it. By the way I liked your site a lot megan. Can you quote for stationary design for my site/company? I will print it here if you charge me fairly.

Because Opera is a better browser - IE doesn't even come close. Because Opera is not a megacorporation trying to take over the web. Because it is not a good thing for one company to control the browser market. Because standards compliance is more sensible than browser-specific hacks.
E-mail me privately about the stationary thing... glad you like the site

Why's it a better browser? Every time i've used it, theres been a few sites that display wrong whereas every one of them displays perfect in IE. Just cos its microsoft isn't a good reason to not use it.

DaveyBoy, there have been many, many threads here about different browsers, do a search and read up on it. Let's not take over this thread with it
Fedele, you have a very nice site here, as Megan says nice to see something different on a gaming site On the Mouseovers, I would have the initial state black with the rollover colour changing to a lighter grey to make the change more obvious as it hardly notices right now.
Julia - if life was meant to be easy Michael Angelo would have painted the floor....

I have to say, as Megan did, that this is the best looking gaming site that I have reviewed here too. (i am not a gamer either) So many of them are crowded with bad quality graphics and are dark and drab. This one is very inviting.
I have only one thing that I didn't particularly like but it is just a personal preference. I think the link colors that you are using in the body part should be something other than gray (#cccccc). I was thinking maybe make the links white and use #FFCC00 for hover. (just a thought )
Now for the code.
There are two marginwidth="0" in the body tag.
The Doctype is for HTML 4.01 Transitional but the meta tags and style sheet tags have the space and slash as you would use in XHTML. For example;
/>
Very nice site. I'm impressed.

Thank you! I personally don't mind about scrolling down because I have a wheel mouse, it's actually better. But some articles do need an extra page or 2 to avoid the scrolling. Thanks again!

Looks quite nice. The top menu mouseover effect is extremely subtle. The main page is a bit long.

Thanks disaster master, I liked your suggestion about the link fonts. My friend will have to help me with your code suggestions.
