Nice, I like the colours, although for some reason when I look at the logo I think that should have some colour in it to match more with the icons you have in the other sections. Are the background colours actually websafe colours?
I get a very small horizontal scrollbar at 800*600 though which I think is being caused by the size of the top logo (you really should use height & width with your images) along side the table for the banner advertising.
Julia - if life was meant to be easy Michael Angelo would have painted the floor....

i designed it mainly for 1024x764 and up, although a few things i fixed for 800x600. there are a few things on the site that i cannot format for 800x600, or they would not looks right in higher resolutions (forums area). i dont think very many web masters really worry about 800x600 anymore. for example, i get a horizontal scroll bar on these forums.
hmm, lol, thats another thing i dont bother with. i guess i can go and modify them so they are websafe colors..
what do you mean by use height & width in the images?
is there any more suggestions on how to make the site better?

I like the colors but I don't like the icons. Try making your own, or get something other than those XP things.

Thought A: Looks nice, I like the colours, the layout is fine and seems to work well.
Thought B: Blah, seen it 800 times before. Shades of blue is such a tired colours cheme, and the boxy layout isn't exactly original either.
See, I'm kind of torn. This is a nice looking layout but at the same time it seriously lacks originality. Try introducing a high contrast accent colour (like orange) or creating your own funky icons. Make the icons big and colourful so they stand out.
One other point - do something with your links so they look like links and not plain text. The hover isn't enough.
Edit: Do you have a sample of the old version? I don't quite remember what it was like.

Well, I tried to post the link to Google's cache but it kept breaking up. Just go to Google and type in newbie-developer and look at the cache to see one of the old versions.
Not bad but those colors have been used so much. If you keep that color, I would at least make the title graphic at the top a color that will stand out more.

Did you post the old one for review here? I don't remember seeing that before. I actually find the old version to be much more original than the new one. What you could have done was taken the old one and changed the colours. Those header & footer graphics would look really cool in shades of yellow, orange, and/or red. Put that on a black background with white content area. Something would need to be done with the content and nav areas though. Ideas, ideas... and more useless ideas...

thanks for the comments. i wrote the site so it is fully skinable, so i will start working on a more "original" layout.

I like the new blue one much better. It's a lot brighter and fresher looking. It makes me want to stick around more than the dull, rainy day blues you had before.
I'm not entirely keen on the pink and yellow schemes, although some of those colours would look good if mixed with more higher contrast shades. Like the pink would look good if you left that as the header colours, changed the page background to something dark (navy blue maybe), and made the light pink/purple areas white.
Edit: I had a hard time finding the place to switch the styles. Maybe you could re-label that to make it more obvious.

I think I like the new blue as well. The lime isn't bad either.

I actually quite like the colors and the layout although it has been seen a few times before
One question, your points system seems interesting but I couldn't find what I actually get for my points. Do i get referrals, money, undying gratitude, thos dodgy free pens that always seem to run out after 5 mins.? Tell me more!!!!!

How easy is it to use a unique design or color set with hundreds of milions of websites out there?
korndragon, I think the site looks very good. A huge improvement to what you had earlier. Keep up the good work.
