REVIEW REQUEST: New City Press
OK, so I didn't put the URL in the subject line. Too problematic for sites under construction imo.
Anyway, please tell me what you think. It's a pro bono project and I think they may be afraid to be to critical. No fear of that here
I'm considering centering the pages like so:

Your thoughts on this also please?
Oh, I should add - most of the textual content is recycled at this point.

Ahhh...now I see why you were looking for that particular font a while back.
First thing I notice are the links at the bottom of the first page sorta run together. Maybe add a tad of space in between them or put a | or a :: or a [] around them.....LOL That was fun. Really, I think a little space would be fine.
I don't particulary like that Open City thing but my guess is you are stuck with it. Right? However, I think you did a good job making it look better than the other one you posted when looking for that font.
On the other pages I think you should move the image of the face in stone (logo?) to the top. It looks sorta lost way down at the bottom and there is a good bit of white space to the right of it in the main body part. (below the copyright and stuff) BUT...if you moved it up then you nav would be moved down (maybe too much)??? hmmmmmm - let's see here.
On the mission page and others with sub pages have you thought about putting a dot or some type marker beside the sub pages (mission statement, from the editor, etc.)? At first glance, I thought it said "mission statement from the editor" (one sentence) until dummy me clicked it.
Oh, I see the centered version now. I think I like that one better. Hard to decide. Have you tried this one with some space at the top and bottom so that you can see the background? I think that would look nice. Still not crazy about the navigation. It seems too spaced out to me where you have the sub pages. Me thinks you need a black border around the main table too.
Is there any chance that you could get rid of the OPEN CITY font thing?
Nice work taff.

Your navigation table on the left side keeps changing and hopping all over the place.

hmmm, there is a

' between them now - not seeing it?I know what you mean about the spacing in the navigation. I wouldn't typically use text in the nav like that but I wanted to make it easy for them on future modifications.
I think I will try to tighten up the navigation and move the logo up to the bottom of it.

I think I'm stuck with it. Not only that but I was unable to nail down the fonts OR get any decent source files for the existing graphics. All I've had to work with so far is their current site at:

Looks good. I'm wondering if you could try to introduce another colour somehow.... hmmm... something to think about anyway. I also tend to think that there are too many different fonts being used here - the logo alone is very complex as far as fontography goes, and then you introduce another one for the nav areas and headers, plus the plainer sans font for the "Open City:.." text at the top. It's too bad that you couldn't track down one or more of those fonts from the logo.
I definitely like the centered page better.

Oh.. THERE!
I thought you were referring to the text links on the sub-pages. Hmmm, something to think about.
Megan:
Yeah, I've been a little "monochrome" lately in my designs. Wait til I post my "orange" site
I think I like it centered better as well, with (as d-m suggested) a bit of a margin and a black border. I've played with a few additional colours but none seemed to grab me.
I AM way over the limit on fonts, aren't I. I thought that maybe with the "multi-font" aspect of the logo, I might get away with it.
I did find one that was close but sometimes I find "close" looks worse than a total contrast. Here are the headers done in that font:
http://www.sitesunseen.com/clients/ncp/titles2.html
They don't really work for me.

I dont see the dot either, unless its black
The mission2 page would get my pick I think. The backwards e looks really out of place, but then again the stone face and look and feel of the site make it arty farty look, of which I know nothing about lol. you've captured that arts and culture look well.
I think another color should be introduced as well, not sure what or where, maybe a baby blue, or red stone color?

I prefer the second centered one and I love that colour green although I agree about trying to add another colour to maybe lift it a bit.

I agree centered one is better - on Mission Statement, "selfidentify" is typically hyphenated

OK - took some advice, passed on some
I've centered the whole layout with the black border - thanks disaster for the suggestion. I've also tightened up the navigation a bit. I tried the stone angel logo up top but just didn't like it so she's back at the bottom.
Additional colour: not yet. maybe never. nothing is looking good to me.
Fonts: I finally received a couple of issues of this publication in the mail. Each one is chockful of varying, "irreverent", "edgy" fonts. If anything, I may not have enough happening on this site to really reflect the magazine's style
Having said that, I think that maybe the sans serif page header is a little too much. I'm thinking of dropping it as you can see at the mission2 link above.
Thanks again for the feedback.

Ah, yes....mucho better. I'm not sure if I would drop the header all together. How about leave it as is...possibily change it to all black and make the page title just a tad smaller?? *just slinging some thoughts around here*

hey - I trust you won't pass on mmy "expert" advice - "selfidentified" produced 30 hits in Google; "self-identified" produced 1,770,000

Ya did notice my caveat on the textual content, right?
I'm still waiting on the updated text.
