Review Request (Neutron2k)
Hey guys
I was wondering if some of you could give me a quick review of a few of my sites?
neutron2k.co.uk (Slow freebie server so bare with it!)
laurajerome.co.uk
http://library.witpress.com
callout-computers.co.uk/pages/index.html (I think this one is being taken down by the company)
Would appreciate any input and advice
thanks in advance!

Well Neutron2k did load fast enough, but I was confused by the redirection. Why not just point your TLD to the page your redirect arrives at. Nice job on the graphics and layout tho, especially on the web portfolio page; a lot of people slip up there. On the Laura Jerome site, I would use a table of times for her broadcast schedule and put apostrophes between her name and the s in links like Lauras work diary. On the Wessex Transactions site, I would extend the frame down to the bottom of the page so that users don't have to scroll. Lastly, on the Callout page, use "viruses" rather than "virus's" in the link button and delete the extra space below the page content because scrolling and see nothing could annoy users. I applaud all your work here, these are well designed sites that just need a couple of changes to be perfect.

Callout comptuers is a friends company that is currently not working. My friend sold the company and move to spain but the dude buying the company nicked the phone numbers and pulled out of the deal.
so my friends back and i dont know whats going on yet. I am pc tech as well tho so any probs just ask
Thanks for the feedback!
EDIT: Incidentally the neutron2k redirection is for the following reasons:
first of all I have two sites there and the new one is in a seperate subfolder to the root site. As i want the new site to appear first, thats why theres a redirect.
The redirect is also there to break out of a baner add that appears and causes my pages problems. I run that site on a free host which is quite frankly terrible. Their always up and down and are VERY slow. I should really pay for space but cant be bothered lol.
I would host from home if my parents didnt insist on me shutting down my systems lol.

Cool Site dude (neutron2k.co.uk) clean, easy to navigate, easy on eyes...
One question, did you code the whole site or your using something else?

I coded the site. Its in ASP.
I dont use temlates or anything and I do my own graphics. The only exception to that rule on my personal site is that of the nav buttons, i got them from a freebie icon site until i get round to doing my own.

I quite like you personal site, however, you might want to look at it in ff. At 1280x1024 and 1024x768 resolutions the icons at the top overlap your logo, and the section boxes lose their top border.
Also, don't forget to provide ALT tags to your images.

The first three are very well set up, and are actually very similar in the way you use borders and backgrounds to layout your site. They look great, and besides some loading and redirecting issues on the first one, it was good.
The last one, however, I did not like. The background was very distracting, and the banner seemed to kind of be just sitting at the top, no border, and if it's going to be anchored to the right, here's what I think you should do:
First, make it so the overall banner will span across the screen completely. Then, set a background (image or color) on the entire length of that area. Then, with either text, or an image that will fit well over it, place your logo and everything anchored to the right. This will make it look right and not just floating somewhere.
Good luck with your sites and I hope you benefit from my critique.

Ok have fixed the firefox issue on neutron2k.co.uk,
realised I had misplaced a layer and it wasnt positioning correctly so thats cool now, altough firefox seems to through the backgrounds alignment out so I have to get around to making the layout images transparent - doh!
The redirection issue will be sorted out when i find a liable free ASP hoster with no ads if thats possible.
mscreashuns: thanks for your advice. That site has now been abandoned anyway as there was a hickup with my friend selling the company. Its also a few years old and I lost interest in the project. It was more of a management system than a customer interface. Its got a huge hidden company management system built into it that a lot of teleworks were (supposed) to use when taking bookings for the company.
I personally never liked the design I did but they guy i built it for loved it so thats all that matters really.

(Babe?) *grumbles*
All the sites I make are coded from scratch. The only things I emulate are scripts (Javascript, etc.) that I don't yet know how to code myself. Someday... For now it's a hobby, so for now it can wait.
In the third site I just want to hack in and change the style of your link bar on the left. The primitive style doesn't match the rest of the site. I would suggest making the font smaller and getting rid of the underlines at minimum.
The fourth site is the least appealing of the four, but it's still fairly functional. I feel the background is too independently strong. To still have the same binary effect, I would suggest either fading out the background even more (decrease contrast, make slightly darker) or making to look smaller so that the overall effect is more subtle. What also bugs me is that the left column is somewhat floating. It does not continue all the way to the bottom. It's personal preference, but I would like to see it escorting the main content all the way down, like my site does. And... I don't like the borders... I'd rather see rounded oxes as in your neutron2k site, or something similar.

ok 3rd site...
What browser are you using?
the site was designed for Internet Explorer. If your using anything else youll see a crappy JS replacment for the old netscape.
in IE, their js rollovers. Orange with black text, size 10 fonts lol.
Id completley forgotton that i coded the script to do that!
Check it out in IE. I need to update the netscape and other browser code. Ill switch the whole lot to CSS when i get a minute but works a nightmare at the moment!

Okay, they look good in IE. But then I change my critique: not appealing in FireFox. You can easily have the same effect with divs for all browsers - make the change and people will be impressed regardless of the browser you use. The links suffer the same fate - they all appear underlined all the time in FF, but only on hover in IE. it's an easy fix!

yeah it is an easy fix, but like i said i have to find a few minutes to fix it as work is hectic lol.
shall hopfully have it done by the end of today tho. I cant believe i forgot that i left that in! Its ok for now - most visitors to the site use IE anyway.
The code was only in place for the one or two people who still use netscape 4 lol.
Incidentally, your website has two missing image files on the bottom left corner. Dont know if youve noticed

neutron2k is my personal home page and resources site for guitarists, web developers and comptuer support
callout computers is up and running. your the 2nd person with complaints!
its at callout-computers.co.uk. Thats a friends company
Im working on the ads for my personal site as they are too bigger text but CSS can't override it as they are javascript based and direct from google.
for the turqoise colour scheme, unfortunatly thats the companies colour so i can't do anything about it.

Neutron2k site:Very nice site with good color combos, etc.! One thing, the home page (main-website page) looks a bit off-center due to the color differences between the guitar and the white background where the text and links are. I think maybe using the inner part of the guitar neck (where the higher-pitched E string is) as an implied left margin when centering this section on the page might help with that, though. In short, moving the whole section maybe 50 pixels or so to the left and moving it down some on the page might be friendlier to the eyes. Not sure about everyone else, but my eyes were drawn to the white area between the colored stars and the text because of this.
Laura Jerome site:1). There seems to be too much white space at the top where the logo is, but moving the InLive link down and to the right a little might help take up some of that space.
2). The radio directory image in the lower left of the pages is a bit fuzzy.
3). On the Photos page, comparing the skin colors of Ms. Jerome on the "Hat
Attack" photo and the "I want my pizza" photo, you may notice that her skin
appears reddish in the pizza one. This can easily be fixed with image editors.
4). There is a missing apostrophe in the word "sites" (should be site's) in the
following sentence (see the bold word) on the Contact Laura page:
If you have any questions or comments for Laura, or the sites webmaster, please complete the form below.
Library site:The only thing that got me on this one was the orange color (not the hover color, which seemed okay because it was duller) around the links because it didn't seem to go with the green very well. Of course, if that's what colors the client wants then there's little that can be done. Other than that . . . very nice!
Callout-Computers:The bright red color just seems too bright (hard on the eyes) with the dark blue background.
Hope that helps some, and good luck!

You're right. I think I should have said 15px instead of 50px. After moving my monitor to a better position, I think it's okay where it is as far as the right and left are concerned. The top and bottom margins are okay as they are, too, but (to me anyway) it does seem there's a bit too much gold (?) space at the bottom as compared to the top. I viewed it in both IE and Firefox at 1,024x768 resolution (both looked essentially the same to me) and got the following dimensions for each, which are probably not exact but close enough:
FIREFOX MARGINS: Top=0.8cm, Left=3.9cm, Right=3.9cm, Bottom=4.9cm
IE MARGINS: Top=1.1cm, Right=3.9cm, Left=3.9cm, Bottom=4.2 cm
Since 50px = about 1.5 cm, I believe (like you said) that would be too much, too. Not sure what I was thinking about when I put 50. Moving the content down maybe 0.5cm (15px or so) would seem to help eliminate some of the excess gold space at the bottom and would allow for a little more gold at the top where there doesn't seem to be enough. In short, what I am suggesting would be something like, say, 2.0cm (height) of gold color above the main content and maybe 3.0cm-3.25cm (height) of gold color below the main content. I hope that made sense, but it will actually work just fine as it is.
After looking at it in a more reasonable position (than I did yesterday) just now, I would NOT move the main content part to either side any like I suggested before. Sorry, that was my mistake. If it's possible, I do think having the neck of the guitar go just slightly above the top of the white area would look good (I think Busy suggested this when he said "maybe have the neck go higher," but I'm not sure). If this was done, it wouldn't have to go up much at all . . . just enough to where it isn't even with the line at the top of the white section.
Oh, the radio-directory logo on the Laura Jerome site probably just needs to be sharpened up a couple of notches with an image editor, but the words in that image may still be a bit hard to read (i.e., the "d" in the word "directory" looks sort of like a "c"). I think they would still be made out by most of the visitors to the site, though.

Hey guys
I recently aquired a PDA/GPS system and was having trouble finding pda optimized web sites to view on it, so I have just started a PDA Optimized Web Directory for the free listing of PDA optimized web sites.
Its only a few days into its development but its functional. I will eventually add a style sheet selector for when people are viewing on a pc, but please let me know what you think and bear in mind it's a PDA optimized site.

Hi, well http://www.neutron2k.co.uk/ is a good site, has a nice clean finish. But i wasn't sure what it was all about at first, i thought it was an online music store for a second. Also the ads by google at the bottom are more prominant than your menu at the top. I was taken to the ads before the menu.
http://www.laurajerome.co.uk/ is also a interesting site, but im never a fan of menus on the right hand side, i prefer or find easier to navigate from either the top or left.
as for http://library.witpress.com/default.asp i think its good but not sure about the turquoise colour scheme, maybe try it a bit more blue or green?
Your other site is a dead link.
By the way do you broadcast on the radio online?

HEy thanks for the tips.
the callout computers site is currently in holding, thats a domain holding page thats there.
For the laura j site, the photos were taken from a mobile, explaining the poor quality. That sites also well over a year old now and needs a major update. Also the Radio directory logo is one that is required by the radio index and I am not responsable for it. Altough I guess i could do a new one.
ok my main web site....
which browser were you viewing the site in because it has a css hack for IE and it all looks fine at my end. it also looks fine in firefox? There isnt a spare 50px to move the main content window over :S
The site won't display correctly on Opera or Konqueror at the moment (Bane of my existence) and I am looking for some css hacks for those browsers. any ideas anyone?
again, thanks for the assist!

Ideally these sites should of had seperate review requests.
neutron2k.co.uk
You should be using XHTML, is table less so no reason you can't (tables still validate to XHTML anyway).
The neck of the guitar kind of needs to be there, or maybe have the neck go up higher.
Most of the content opens in the iframe, but the ones that don't have seperate page/look. while it still looks pretty good some do look addy. slight horziontal scroll at 800x600 on some.
laurajerome.co.uk
You have something about frames dont you.
I think the logo on this one is to big. All I see is the logo, 1 visitor and the ladies head. The 'radio presenter' part is hard to read and gives no real incentive to scroll down. Remember people are lazy.
library.witpress.com
This is a well presented site, shame it is ruined with "Optimised for Microsoft Internet Explorer" when there is no need for it
callout-computers.co.uk/pages/index.html
wont work on FF, it's trying to install the index.html instead of running it, suspect a server issue. remove the index off the address and it works. (can't find index.asp)
While your little site accessibility options look impressive your site is not the best accessibilty coded. turn tables off (opera has this option), turn CSS off etc and this is what screen reader would see/read. Your tables etc should include the summary attribute. When you do choose blue or green the font goes real small, and if you choose big font you loose your choice.

hey thanks for those. Yeah they should of been seperate reviews but i figured id save space.
few things to point out tho:
a.> I had no need to XHTML on my site.
b.> Callout Computers is not in tables, so I don't know where you got that from. Also the default page for callout computers is default.asp so i don't know whats going on with the index request. Also it loads fine on my FireFox, and 4 other systems that i have tried under ff. :S So there is no problem.
c.> there is no iframe on any of the sites, its all css layers that use the overflow: auto method.
d.> on n2k.co.uk there shouldnt be any horizontal scrolling. could you please give me the urls of the pages that do? Edit: just realised you meant the resource center. I have to sort that asap.
e> Laurajerome - yeah this site was coded over a year a go and does use tables. I am assuming you are running in 800x600? I never deisgned that apart from the width to work with that res. 1024x768 is pretty much the standard now.
