REVIEW REQUEST: DontFart.com
We are still working on this site, and I need some feedback as per the colour and layout as it is right now.
luckyavenue.com/portal/layout.html
The site will be the main page for DontFart.com when it is completed.
Please note the news, weather and the like will reflect the users location. The news and the other items on the bottom with be fixed up (divided up neatly with the columns).
The site will be running the main items (listings) within the site itself (LOVE, CARS, HOMES, CAREERS, GAMES) as well as a new sytle search engine.
What do you guys think of the concept and of the name?
Thx.
Andymac

I like the name as it sparks your curiosity.
The colors are a bit much for me. You have so many colors together that don't match.
I see you are still in development and so I don't want to make too many remarks when your in the design stage. As far as concept.. I'm still not sure excactly what website is about as you can do so much like read horoscropes, news, find a date, search the web, find job, check stocks, read news.
It looks like a little bit of everything.

Sorry I did not mention the concept for the site ... It is going to be a portal site....the next Yahoo!
We are going to be controlling most of the content in house and not sending people to other peoples sites. However, our shopping area and travel area with be linked to affiliate sites.
If you think the colours do not match, please advise me which colours....or you think the colours are just to bright please also state that.

That's one busy looking site (no relation )
you need to check your layout in mozilla and opera, you have some display problems, mostly with the 'love zone' and 'best buy finder' search boxs overlapping stuff, also 'b2b zone's content .
your 'love zone' only allows you to select one option (instead of two)
whats the date at the top? last updated? whatever it is, dont need it, weather? even if you do manage to get the persons country right can't we just look out the window?
you have 'help us build up our search engine' at the top but a little bit down the page you have googles search box?
No offense but it looks like one of the many affiliate link sites out there, the ones where they jam as many links as they can. How about break the site down into sections, example google.com has the main search, image search, news ... all without being in your face. something like google is user friendly, yours is very confusing and could be intimidating
When you first look at the site, the chocolate banner sticks out before the dontfart one, so first impressions could be its a chocolate site, called dans.com
am not sure if the 'live scores' are working in opera and mozilla, is in IE5
Will be interesting to see how you space the bottom section out, maybe bring the bottom section up the center and have everything at top now on the sides (3 column layout)?

Thanks for reviewing some of the others sites
To be perfectly honest if I found this site I would probably just close it straight down as that first page is just far too cluttered and confusing. Nothing wrong with being brightly coloured but it's too in ya face, especially if you want it to be a good directory (you'll never beat Yahoo!), it has to be easy to use.
Branding is everything on a site and as Busy said the first thing to catch the eye is the chocolate banner, your logo just gets lost in the meyhem of the rest of the page, it needs to stand out.
Also as Busy mentioned - I know the date, thanks, and whilst it is interesting to know the weather in Totonto if I want to know it I'll go to a weather site to find out.
I think you are possibly trying to be too much and you've crammed it all onto that one page! Think about what you want to offer and work at providing that in an easy to navigate, user friendly way. You wont beat the long standing, well known sites like Yahoo but you can join them
Julia - if life was meant to be easy Michael Angelo would have painted the floor....

Since you so kindly reviewed my site I guess its time to review yours. I do think that dontfart definently catches my attention but it does no have the ring of yahoo or google. Its hard for me to imagine looking to a site with that name for valid, current and comprehensive information. Anyways that's just what I would think when surfing to a site of that name. But then again I have heard your views on what's professional so I'm sure you have already considered that...maybe design courses would help.
Ok so the design..
Like everyone said its hard to pick out your logo from th clutter. If you want people to stay then they must be able to find what they want without being bombarded with colors and tiny text. You must however make it evident that your site has been sorted and those catagories must be obvious to the users. You have so much stuff that you may have to break it up into sections as previously mentioned. If you are going to display sports stats then you may have to accept that lots of people may have java turned off for security reasons.

OWWWWW! My eyes... my eyes!
Theres no many colours on this page... limit them to similar colours, ie all oranges, all blues on my.yahoo they let you select your own colour scheme. Maybe that would appeal to customers?
Also, in the news/horoscopes section in the bottom, do something about that dark black line. Either make it thinner or reduce it to a lighter shade of grey (or both!).

Hello
I agree with tthe chocolate advert, it should be under a "sponsers or adverts" heading to the side with others like it.
First impression for me was, that it all seems top heavy, everything seemed crammed into the top half of the page, making the rest of the page seem too long.
The colours could work if spread differently, dont know how sorry?
I really dont like the name of the site though, seems very childish to me, like its aimed at teens.
Good luck with the site, but i cant see google losing sleep. sorry..

You definitely didn't waste any space at the top of the page.
The header (title and logo) should be more separated from the content of the page. Everything is all jumbled up.
As for the concept, there are thousands just like this out there. What are you going to offer to make you site different?
The domain name doesn't fit your content at all.

alittle too busy, too many of the repeating "boxes" everywhere. Make the middle standout or be different than the outside areas.

Doesn't look too bad at all.
It is a bit colorful, but it seems tasteful.
There is a lot there, to where it is almost cluttered, but your layout seems to manage the clutter effectively.

I must thank everyone for their comments. There has been a lot of good ideas posted here which I will bring together when I start the next sample layout.
I am still in the process of getting more feedback ... more towards my site's target demographics 13-35.
As I have had different reviews (outside of this forum) I have decided to redo the layout and post 2 different layouts and request feedback on which looks the best.
Any other suggests/feedback are still welcome.
Thanks!

Hi there,
Honestly... I think this sort of portal style web site is a thing of the past... like fine print on a contract... people have a way of just glossing over portal sites.
Just my opinion

Whew! I was looking for the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow!
Tone down those colors a little. The page seems cramped and color abused! The navigation links made my mouse dizzy and didn't know where I could begin!

I think the color is so overwhelming because everything is so close together. If you used a bit of white space between the colorful boxes I think it would tone it down a bit.
Depending on what demographic group you are targeting a vivid colorful layout like this might work well (with some white space).
However if you are going to have more serious topics (stock, news, weather, b2b, jobs) rather than fun ones (dating, horoscopes, sports, chat) then the colors do need to be changed a bit.
Keep it up, you'll get it.

Hi, if you are going to be the next yahoo, you better clean things up a bit, I know it is in the begining stages, but, when I clicked on it the first time, I just x-ed out of it right a way, then I went back and to review it after reading some of the other replies, way to many colors, way to many links, some of the text is way to small, you have crammed 3-4 pages of info onto 1 page, however, I have book marked your site, just so I can keep up on the site, and see the final out come, I think you are on the right track, just do a "house cleaning" and you will be set, good luck...

Hi,
Nice layout, but I think this layout is not suitbale for a portal site!
A portal site, should have more space for contents! My personal advice is that, make three column for the page, put your main contents like news, reviews etc in middle and navigation, sponsor ads and other stuff on left and right coloum!
Further more, colors are OK, but they can be improve.. Overall Nice Work!
