Cool Tools is a little personal project that stemed from me trying to sort out this css layout and fumbling through my Favorites looking for help. So I combined the two. Smiling

I am mainly wanting the layout critiqued as I do plan to use it for the divasedge.net main site but maybe with different colors. Comments on the content for this little mini link directory are welcomed but I am not finished organizing everything yet. I still have some links that are in the wrong category and haven't added everything.

I noticed in Mozilla that the navigation links in the right hand column (an unordered list) have a big gap on the left side instead of lining up to the left like they do in IE and Opera. I tried to fix this using the following style and reducing the left margin but the list bullets disappeared in IE.

ul {
margin-top : 2px;
margin-bottom : 10px;
margin-left : 10px;
border : none;
}

That is all my weary brain can think of right now. Tear this one apart for me! Wink

To be honest, this is my very first visit to webmaster forums, and my first post. I can see right off the bat that I did find a very professional site, and the links that I'll click through are very worthy of the "add to favorites" button.

The cool tools site is great. Hard for me to find anything wrong. I can find a lot more wrong with my own site than I can with yours. From what I've been reading, the only thing I could even suggest would be that the navigation thing at the bottom of the page might be shorter. I've read that 5 or 6 links there is better in the long run.

Looks good. I'm not too sure about that header there. The clip-art pieces are okay, but they're not done in the same style so they don't coordinate very well with each other. Find two that come from the same artist so there's more coherence there. You've also got four lines of centered text there which I think is too much. I really think that the title does enough to explaihn what the site is about - you don't need two more lines to elaborate on that.

About the links, I know that you're not done with these yet, but some of them could use more organization - under the blogging section, for example, blogging tools and software should be listed separately from other blogging sites. I guess it depends on how much work you want to put into it Wink

Otherwise it looks good. I know what you mean about the colours - you could use just about any colour with this site which could be fun.

Looks good, did you punch that lil dude in the eye lol Laughing out loud

only things I can find with it

the listings in mozilla - nav and link lists (as you mentioned)
and the heading 'A directory of links ...' in mozilla is black, but white in other browsers

you might want to check the link for webmaster forums on forums page Wink

Only other thing I could offer is to maybe have the page your on link underlined, or different colour or something.

Ah Ha!! Hey dk01. I found the fix for the list margin problem in Mozilla. It works.Laughing out loud

Make sure that you have margin left and padding left in your style sheet.

This is the change that I made.

ul {
margin-top : 2px;
margin-bottom : 10px;
padding-left : 0px;
margin-left : 15px;
border : none;
}

Busy, I am glad you found that TWF link error. that is embarassing. And of all the links, it had to be that one. LOL Shocked

Meg, you have a wonderful eye. I see what you mean now about the image at the top. Those are M$ cliparts so I should be able to find two that are similar.

Ched, thanks for the review. I know what you mean about the long list of links at the bottom but it is sorta all or none for this though. Maybe as I categorize things more, I can shorten the navigation list. This site is only two days old. Lots of work still to be done.

Smiling

Not really much to add here but I will back up what Megan said about the two cartoons. My first thought was I like the one on the left but the one on the right doesn't match it and looks out of place. Maybe just stick to the one on the left if you can't get another one to match.

your basics are pretty advanced. I was interested in css as Andy used it on my new site, but i STILL dont know what it is! is it xhtml? or i mean dumb it down a little. (or a lot) CSS is ________ It enables you to do _________. maybe im just on the slow end of the processor scale. I did like the part about email harvesting robots, but thats because im picturing it like terminator. -Josh

I have altered the logo like Megan suggested using the same style clipart. Which do you you all like best?

jha2297255, to answer your questions --

***XHTML (Extensible Hypertext Markup Language) is the standard markup language for web documents and the successor to HTML 4. It brings uniformity to document structure. Valid, well–formed XHTML documents can easily be “transported” to wireless devices, Braille readers and other specialized web environments. Moreover, XHTML’s insistence on clean, rule–based markup helps us avoid the kind of errors that can make web pages fail even in traditional browsers like Microsoft Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator, and Opera Software’s Opera browser.

***CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) is a standard layout language for the Web—one that controls colors, typography, and the size and placement of elements and images. CSS is intended by its creators (W3C) to replace HTML table-based layouts, frames, and other presentational hacks. CSS, together with other web standards such as XHTML, helps us separate style from content, making the Web more accessible, and opening it up to more powerful applications and technologies to come.

I figured that if I put it in my own words, I may confuse you. The NYPL Styleguides are a great resource of info if you are just learning. Hope that helped. Smiling

Very nice content! I can't see anything wrong with it. It works well with smaller resolutions too. One thing that I would suggest is to try and get rid of the vertical scroll bar on the front page. There's so little below the "scrolling" line that I think you can scrunch it down a bit more. At least, for 1024x768 resolution anyway. Also "webmasters miscellaneous" is a broken link.

I have decided with the help of you all to use the #1 logo. Thanks for the input. That is the one that I liked but I value your opinions.

djhals and newuseryeah, thanks for the review.

I fixed the webmasters resources link. Dreamweaver did it! Laughing out loud

As for the verticle scroll bar. The only way that I can do that is to either get rid of the header of footer completely and I would still have to shorten up the menu to loose the verticalness. Think I will just leave that as is. Thanks for the suggestion anyway.

Why not get rid of the "Helpful Web Design Resources" line? It seems redundant (unless it's there for search engines), and jsut takes up space, especially since the next line says basically the same thing. I'd like to know why both of those lines are there, anyway. You could also lose the "Navigation" header on the navbar - that one is kind of redundant as well.

Here's an idea! Why not add a "suggest a resource" link, so people can e-mail you with sites you might want to include?
You might get a lot of self-promotional crap in there, but at the same time people may have good ideas of sites you've missed.

Good points there Meg.

Yes, I have the "Helpful Web Design Resources" and "A directory of links: Tutorials and resources for web developers" there for the search engines but I suppose I could loose one of them. Getting listed in the search engines is not a priority for this little project anyway.

Do you have any suggestions for the wording of the bit in the red section below the header graphic other than what I have there? Or does "A directory of links: Tutorials and resources for web developers" sound alright to you?

Also, I am not pleased with the link name "Webmasters Miscellaneous". Suggestions for a new link name?

Excellent site ... simple clean layout ... a great site to bookmark (all nice in neat in one site instead of bookmarking hundreds)
