REVIEW REQUEST: db-unlimited.net
Hey guys. I'm brand new to this forum, as well as fairly new to the whole webmaster business. I was wondering if I could get any help or comments on my website, http://www.db-unlimited.net. Most people probably won't be familiar with the content, but I am just asking for critique on the layout. Thanks in advance.
Also, I would like to note that I will be helping out by reviewing other sites when I can. I'm just glad to be a part of this.

Hi & welcome to TWF  Good to see you're helping out others, thanks.
Normally I would say the flash intro was unnecessary but I guess being a game site it's ok, although I would put the system requirements on there as that isn't going to make anyone change their settings.
Once into the site I get a small horizontal scrollbar at 800*600 and wow is that text small and hard to read! You have so much on the first page that it just looks confusing. I would create some padding between the two sections 'Latest Additions' & 'Section Spotlight' as the text is almost running into each other. I also think that the links, especially on the main links on the left, could use some colour on hover.

Thank you for your suggestions. I'll get right on it.
EDIT @ 4:20am - I padded the table in between 'Latest Editions' and 'Section Spotlight'. I also changed the font in the news from Arial to Verdana, which to me looks much more readable. And about the scrollbar, I see it too but everyone else I talk to doesn't see it. For the longest time I thought it was just me but now that I know there are others I will try to fix it. The problem is that I'm not sure what is causing it. Any suggestions about this?

The most glaring problem for me on the front page here is the row of buttons in the lower left corner. The fonts aren't the same for each button, which looks really unprofessional. Make sure they are all the same size and colour. I also think that there should be a little more space between the blue box and the yellow bullet things. Either that or you could make a circle shaped cutout in the blue boxes so they sort of fit right around the bullets.
Another problem here is all the disclaimers - system requirements and the note about how the flash doesn't work right on the first play. What you need to work on is getting your site to work properly for most of your visitors on the first try. That's something that takes practice though, so I don't blame you for not getting it right the first time
I do like the layout here, particularly the top area with the logo and picture. I think that you may have one too many different fonts up there but overall it looks nice.
Now that I'm inside I'm thinking that what you should do with those fonts I was talking about on the front page is style them to match what you've got on the inside of the site. That would just create a more consistent flow from page to page.
The only other thing I have to say about this page is that, as Webmistress pointed out, there is too much text on here and the fonts are way too small! Font size=1 is way too small for any kind of body text.
Since I am looking at the code, I would like to recommend that you stop using FrontPage and start learning HTML and CSS. What you've got there is a big mess - font tags everywhere. If you learn to code yourself you can get much more control over your layout and create much smaller (in terms of file size) pages.
As I'm browsing around here I'm noticing that not every page has the same template as the main section. This is probably something that should be consistent throughout the site. I even came across one page with a white background! Another thing to avoid is underlining text that isn't links - that just confuses people, especially when you've also coloured them differently.

Oh you are gonna just love me.
After about 2 minutes, I hit the skip intro button. The first page never did load and I am probably in the majority when I say that I don't wait for pages to load. At least not that long. I am on a dial up and so is a lot of other people. Finished with that rant.
Graphics are pretty good. I am not into gaming sites except for here at TWF when reviewing sites but I have to say that this looks better than most.
I think I read where Megan was fussing about all the fonts used but IMO, I think they look alright considering the content. Gee...I can't believe I said that. LOL
The pages, especially /index2.shtml is way to long. Is there any way you can slim down that page? Another thing is that on some of the other pages you have a big, black, blank space due to the long menu on the left and lack on content in the body part. Just looks a little empty.
Now I am going to go hide so that Megan can't find me and give me the old one-two for talking about her fussing.

I was going to mention the buttons on the first page when I first looked at it but then I changed my mind. As it's a gaming site and not a professional body/business site I thought that it didn't matter and probably went with the content ok.

Alright! Dragoball!
ahem..
I am perfect to review your site as I am one of the people you are trying to attract to it. I have been to many sites like yours searching for DBZ pics and sometimes plot information (like what happens after vegeta explodes and takes buu with him? Is that the end of dbz? can't be...) .
First off I must say that I skipped the intro as soon as I saw the skip intro link. I could not hit that fast enough. I took several minutes for your main page to load. In a normal situation I don't know weather I would have bothered to keep waiting. Do you really need all those little imgs linking to top 100 lists?
Honestly when I see them all I think is cheap cash in site, like a porn site. I really hate them. If your site can't survive with out them then pack it in. I say get rid of them.
Your gallerys are nice but I get a 404 error when trying to download some of vegeta's pics. Nice to see you used thumnails though, many DBZ sites just display the full sized images made smaller through html. That gets me mad.
I'd combine 'the rundown' and your news section. They are really the same thing. At least move the news above it.
In general I'd like to see your site download a lot faster and look a little cleaner. Your content seems quite good and the updates seem to come often enough. All in all its a good site which could be great.
BTW are you listed on anipike.com? If not get listed there. it's where I go first when looking for an anime site.

Well I've gotta say... you're definately not lacking in content. You've done a great job of trying to organize so much information in one space.
I also love your template!
Great way to keep your content contained.
I would like to see you change the white background pages to your main design. When I saw them I thought I was on another site at first.
Try to keep everything in the same template (or at least a complimentary template)
One other little problem... Your "Back to top" link didn't work for me.
All in all, I really liked the look of your site!
If I was an anime fan I'd be hanging around your place.

OK.
As usual I didn't read the previous comments to stay inbiased,
so please ignore dupes.
1. font size="1" - one ? That is as tiny as it gets, on my system that's 5x3...
2. width. on my screen (browser at 1600x1200) it uses only ~1/3, that's a lot of wasted space
3. length even with the micro font it's five pages long. try to only post around the five newest news on the page and move older ones to an extra page. (At text zoom 200% - readable - it's eleven pages long.)
4. You are aware that the logos and character are copyrighted ?!
5. The basic layout looks OK, but a bit too _familiar_.
IMNSHO getting inspired by other sites is OK, but this seems a bit more ...
Just my two cents.

Hi,
There are already a lot of good comments here about your site File.
It looks like you have tons of content, thats excellent. I dont have much to say other than the site, even after entering the main page took a second or two longer than it should, and I am hooked up by broadband.
If you want to leave the site the way it is, thats up to you of course. But it does seem to be a little graphic intense on the main page (not including the entrance page). I didnt download any of the graphics from your site to check individual size, of course, but you may want to think about trying to cut them down in kb's. This will make the page load faster.
Nice site.

Cool design. I like the bright colors... great for a site with content such as yours. I noticed the header graphic alone was 87kb. That combined with the other graphics and text/HTML of the pages probably makes for a slightly long load time on the end of 56k users. Great looking site though.
