REVIEW REQUEST: The Buzzards Roost R/C Club
Alrighty here is one for you guys and gals to tear apart.
This is my husbands remote control airplane club site. I did a little experimenting on it. (that is what hubbys are for;)) after recently purchasing the book, Dreamweaver Magic, which has several templates in it to follow. I am using the template, "Using CSS to make navigaton images." Be forewarned the the nav buttons in NS 4 look like plain old gray buttons but they sure are purty in standard compliant browsers. That is ok though...the site is totally accessible. I still have to figure out how to install the extension that will take the dotted lines off the the buttons on click but I will get to that later.
Haven’t added any pics yet so it looks a bit plain. Any comments welcome. I am not happy at all with the “Members” page. Those tables are UCK!!! Would love to hear any creative suggestion for this.
Have at it!!!

buzzards-roost.com is still available.
To be honest, I have no problem with the design. It's a little short on the creative side. I'm sure you guys could come up with some cool pics.
elaborate...

since you mentioned the buttons didnt look right in NS4 I thought I'd use Opera6 (as Opera6), but it has the grey buttons too (input type buttons). looks good in IE.
if you used images it would work on all browsers and you wouldnt have the dotted line to get rid off
for the members page tables, how about pale colored rows?
and the links in the link table could maybe be left aligned instead of centered
LOL love the "rules for all"
what images do you plan to add, apart from in the members sections? the main plane is a lil too fuzzed, even for flight.
looks good, hubby must like it?

Buttons are nice but was slightly confused at first by them as the cursor doesn't change to hand on mouseover so wasn't sure they were working! I agree about the tables, give them some colour and that'll brighten up the page, maybe pale yellow? On the Rules page the thing that sticks out to me is the line of sub-links 'Meetings :: Membership Classes :: etc' as this is longer and starts further to the left than all the rest of the text on the page. The 'Rules For All' link doesn't work.
It'll definitely be better with some pictures. I'm currently doing a site for a Microlight Flying School/Club so slightly bigger planes there!

Adding onFocus="blur()" should clear up that dotted line thing.
I'm not sure I like the blue links or the green quote in conjunction with the red/yellow theme.
Funky font in the logo - think you could get away with using it for the page titles as well?
desinged?
one little nitpick/personal note: I think that design credit links should always open an external window so as not to detract from the client's site.
Nice work.

LOL-Oh, didn't I tell ya'll that was a new word I made up? That is when you sing and design at the same time.
Ya'll are right about opening my business site in a new window....fixed!
onFocus="blur()" doesn't work for these dotted lines. And there isn't an extension to get rid of them like I thought there was either.
Oh that darn green text...so far I have made it about 15 different colors. Can't decide.
Hand added for mouseover on link buttons. Didn't even notice...thanks Julia.
Did something different for the sub-links on the Rules page. See if that is acceptable. Any suggestions?
I have about two years worth of pictures to sort through. Thought I might add an action shot here and there throughout the site. Maybe one or two on each page for visual stimulation. Going to try and get to that today if time permits. I am really dreading editing all those photos. *believe that is called procrastination*
Yes I know. But the club doesn't want to pay for it...so on Angelfire they will reside. They have been on Angelfire for almost two years now and as long as they are listed on the towerhobbies.com site, they are happy. Don't you know you can't argue with a bunch of men.
Who said I was creative? Not me. I just do my best. Granted I haven't put 100% into this site. Heck, it is a freebie.
Busy, you have hurt me wittle feewings about the plane in the logo. As taff says.....Back to the drawing board on that one.

I still don't get a hand over the button links. Not sure about the sub-links, now they look a bit squished up. I'll have a think on that one

What browser are you using Julia that doesn't display the hand?

I'm not getting the hand on the links either.
I'm using a little 13' monitor and still see lots of white space. Makes the page look a little sparse. I agree that there could be more color.
On the Rules page, I think it would be better if you seperated the links into two lines rather than cramming them together in one. It makes it hard to tell they are even separate links.
This is just a little thing, but why use a Serif font for some of the headings while everything else is sans-serif? I liked the previous suggestion of perhaps using the funky font from the title/logo to create headings. Or since they are larger and a different color, at least stick with the sans-serif.
Overall a clean design and easy to navigate.

Julia, will you test the hand for me in IE 5.5?
I added the following to my style sheet that is suppossed to be a fix for this.
a {
cursor: pointer;
cursor: hand;
}

The home page has a slightly different look for the plane now.
Which looks best? Old one on all other pages.

Looks good with the photos, still no hand and on the rules page maybe put a space between each sub-link & * now that you have more room??

Try once more Julia if you don't mind. I applied a seperate style to THIS PAGE ONLY.
If this does't fix it then I am at a loss. I really wouldn't consider it a biggie though. As long as the link buttons change color, that should indicate to the user that it is the navigation.

Nope still the arrow - not so confusing in IE5.5 as the colours change but would a novice to the internet know that and in NS it doesn't even change colour it's always grey.

hey DM - on Rules
"first come, first, served" - this is shortened from "the first who has come will be served"
"Possession of the frequency pin shall be limited to 15 minutes, if others are waiting." - I'd drop that comma
"Hand launching is permitted only from the designated area."
no apostrophe in the first "pilots box."
"In any case of model malfunction in the air (radio or mechanical), promptly ..."
"No models shall be flown above the altitude of 400 ft." - don't people usually say "an altitude"
"four" instead of "4"?
some 'a those "Rules For All" are pretty funny :jester:
"When in doubt, hold on to your altitude." - ya see what'll get by a spellchecker
"A 'good' landing is one from which you can walk away." - you used double quotes elsewhere - and don't shoot mme, but things have really loosened up in recent years about ending sentences with prepositions - mmy advice would be to go with whatever sounds right - in this case I'd go with "... one you can walk away from" - but I think the second sentence here works well - but do you mean "you" instead of "they"
" ... your brain ..." - your "mind"?
"... equal to the number of takeoffs ..."
mmy understanding is that you can make appeals regarding the Laws of Physics, but they're really tough to win on

Thanks MMI. Your prop wash is excused.
That was a copy/paste from an e mail that someone sent me a while back and it never crossed my mind to do a spell check.
