Soon we are going to open a new store selling pet supplies, veterinary supplies and vaccines, pet medications etc. We tried to make a proper design for this store, something close to veterinary subjects and at the same time unique and attractive.

Could you, please, review it before we open a store? It’s http://www.dogcatetc.com/

198 validations erros, it appears whatever cms you are using, it has been tailored for aesthetics, rather attracting search engines with clean code. Front page is waaaaaaay too cluttered. People don't want to be greeted with toom uch infomration on a home page, it scares them!

Looks ok to me, anyway I understand that you need critiqued on the look and usability instead of the codes.
The approach is straight forward for those that would immediately want to buy, you could be subtle with the details, too much info on the welcome page drags the eyes away from what you are selling, for the site however its ready for business, but then you need to tweak some details and info overload...

Here are the problems I saw...

1) why do you retiterate the listing of each major heading when you have links to them farther down the page anyway. What I mean is when I clicked on Medical, the page came up with the Medical Heading and then only text that read,

"Antibiotics, ear products, eye products, first aid, flea/tick spot-Ons, flea & tick products, flea & tick collars, flooring, medical supplies, medications, pfizer, prescription, syringes & needles, test kits, topicals, west nile vaccines, wormers, vaccines, sheep vaccines, horse vaccines, canine vaccines, and feline vaccines"

as all normal text, then further down the page you had the links to each one of these. I would take out the normal text with out a doubt. As said before this site is very cluttered.

2) On your home page you have text descriptions on all your major links on the left hand side. I would remove these text description, most are obvious associations and if they are looking for something specific they can search so you don't have to worry about it in the listings.

3) I would have much larger spacing between your items (and less of them to remove the clutter). It reminds me of Best Buy's web site, I'm so over whelmed by the first page that I immediately try to leave it and get somewhere a bit more friendly on the site. Use some white space and make it seem less like you are trying to sell everything you got on the first page.

4) You are using a lot of colors here. I think that is fine with the pictures of the different animal, but don't rotate around colors on titles, heading, and page breaks. The first page has a blue page break and then a gray one. I think that looks weird. I don't have a strong background in art so I will be interested to see what someone like Megan might have to say about this. I have heard from others that normally you want to stick with something like 3 colors. What I mean by the color scheme can be seen at Tiger Direct's homepage ... http://www.tigerdirect.com/ (aaahhh but they list way to much crapola as well!)

I know that it is very tempting to have a page that looks like a tiger direct or a best buy content wise, but if you are having trouble talking yourself out of listing so much stuff take a look at sony.com or apple.com both of these sites have a ton of things to sell but there home page is very clean and easy to navigate.

First off, I like your header and overall look. Nice job on that.

However, the section with the products is just way, way too cluttered. The "Top Categories" section really is only big enough for two of those categories to fit and be easily readable. You can still use two rows, but only have one column. In the "Featured Products" section, you might be able to fit four and keep them easily readable. Maybe a 2x2 grid.

I know some of that may be built into your store management software, but that's my advice. If there's any way to change it at all, do so.

I would nitpick a few other minor things, but all those products crammed in there needs to get changed first.

Very nice header and look overall.

The site has a neat, professional layout that serves well for a storefront. I would suggest featuring only three or four products on the homepage and using dropdown menus for each of the categories. Also, you may want to have the 'information' change for each page to be info specifically about that category and shorten the main page title to "Pet Supplies from Dog, Cat, Etc.,". I like your Pet of the Month idea, but you should offer a form for users to upload them directly, instead of by e-mail. Overall, I think you're definetely ready for business!

I agree with most of what people have said above.

When the website first loaded I was very impressed. It is very professionally done and looks great. The logo (upper-left image) doesn't flow into the rest of the header. One just stops and the other begins. Not a big deal though...

I like how you use pictures for all of your products. It definitely helps, but you should really limit yourself on the amount of stuff you put on the front page. It looks very crampred and makes me feel like I'd never be able to find anything.

Good luck with your business! Once your website is up to par, I think you could become very successful. Wink

I agree, it is a little cluttered on the front page.... could spread it out a bit, onw thing i dont want is to slammed with too much information on one page. The style and design is great, it looks VERY professional.

BTW.... i have two dogs as soon as you open you have a customer Laughing out loud Nice prices.

You are based in the U.S. right?

I like it. The layout is simple yet professional. The only thing is that it doesnt fit in my browser horizontally. No big deal but maybe something to look at.
Good work.

I like it, i can deal with the amount of stuff but then i look at sites all day every day. For an average web user it may put them off.

Design: I like the colors and general layout, it is fairly inviting and warm. The info module on the bottom left side is not following the same style sheet rules (I suspect because the info header does not have < a href > tag.

The footer tag is not center or left/right justifed properly.

I would put a medium grey border around the shoppoing cart "module" to make it a tad more distingusihable.

Accessibility: There are some images (like the shopping cart image, credit cards, 91 in all) that does not have a alt="" tag in it. Make sure that it's all covered. Smiling

Content: Front page seems a bit too busy, but it's not completly overwhleming.

I have to agree that there is way too much going on on the homepage. I like the title bar and the animal pics are cute and inviting, pet owners will love that. But then I was just over-awwed with the amount of text and products.

3-4 highlighted products with larger pics and text would be much better and then you could space things out a little more and make your text bigger.

The top text that describes the company should really be the first thing everyone reads and therefore needs to stand out more, maybe using bullet points or something similar.

I would try and limit your colours also as the very nature of your products and business should dictate a very clean and fresh website/colourscheme.

I noticed on your product pages you have an extended menu on the left in gold which works really well, I would put this on the home page too.

In a nutshell I'd say less is more on a homepage, just enough information to make someone look further but not too much to bore or scare them off.

Best of luck and well done.
