Please Review: Yellowpages & 411
I am new to this forum, but not new to the Web and other forums. I say that to say don't worry about hurting my feelings.
Like many others in this business I appreciate input.. and in many ways I am an input junkie.
Ok, here is a couple of my sites, and I would love your input.
city-yellowpages.com
411locate.com
Also when you hit the site check out "hot offers" a new idea that I am beta testing.
Kind Regards

I use the British yell.co.uk often; I find it a very useful site. However I wish it was as clutter free as yours. Short, sweet, functional and to the point. Well done. You have got all your ads in which are not so in your face and they don’t piss me off like so many other similar sites. I also found it nice and quick to load.

All the above and just a little thing:
Try putting the nav bar at the bottom of your front page in Verdana or some other font to match the rest of your site on CityYellowPages

I like the way you have both of these sites! If I had to choose a design, I think I'd go with a combination of the 2.
I think I like the way you have it at 411locate where everything is in the same window. On city-yellowpages you have some things opening in pop-up windows or new windows and I don't believe you need that.
My honest oppinion... for the homepage, I like the looks of the city-yellowpages site a little more than the other. They both look very good, but the yellowpages one just seems more tidy to me.
For the inner pages, I like the way the 411locate pages are done where everything is contained in the "frame". On the yellowpages inner pages, there's not quite enough seperation of content sections for me.
Of course, these are personally subjective oppinions.
It looks like you have a terrific service here and 2 very good designs!
Best of luck and have a ball with them both!
gotta finish redesigning my sites so I can show them again.

Great input.
The idea of the pop_up is to feature our "hot Offers" from the affiliate partners. This allows a quick look at the latest offer, and if nothing is of interest close the window and continue with their search.
I did not want to load a new page just to view a current offer.
This is a new idea that I am working with the affiliates to only show their latest and greatest promotion, and adjust their landing page for the offer only.. this is going slow but moving forward.
Also we are moving in the direction of "Dynamic Rich Media" (DRM) rather than links that need to be updated. With DRM when they update the promotion they do it from their end and does not require programming from us. This prevents outdated content on our site.. and for them it pushes their latest promotion, and the user traffic gets to see the best deal.
The best affiliate, at this time, is in the gifts/ flowers catagory by "Hickory Farms" that entire graphic is DRM updated by them.
Karen thanks again for your kind thoughts, and of course your time.
heebiejeebieclu...
I like your font idea.. very much appreciated.

Ahhhhh... I get it now!
I thought that they were more of a "bought ad" space. Sort of a rotatating banner ads promotion.
If they are updating their latest offers then I can understand why you might want a seperate pop up so you wouldn't have to limit their ad sizes or whatever.
That is very clever backend work! Nicely done!
Am I the only one who didn't realize this was for time sensitive ads (latest offers, or limited time offers)? Could be... sometimes I can be a bit daft.
gotta finish redesigning my sites so I can show them again.

You do not appear daft.. what I appreciate is that you did not recognize the purpose.. that tells me we need to do a better job for explaining.
Space is a limiting factor to being to long in description, and I picked "hot offers" to indicate what is behind the link. I am now thinking "hot deals" or "promotions".. I would like "Special Promotions" but it is to long.
Maybe a graphic or combination.
It is difficult because what we are doing is new, and until people understand what is behind the link it is just another link of thousands.
No, I don't think you are daft... you are generous with your opinions.
Great Help

Hee hee... fooled another one...
Thank you!
Perhaps it's because we're seeing an over abundance of ads on the internet anymore. Webmasters often sell ad space to help pay for the website, so we've almost come to expect some type of banner ads on the site.
What you are doing with the (for lack of a better term) time sensitive ads is different, so it may take a little explaining.
Maybe something in the pop-up itself?
I know you say "These Offers are made by Brand name Merchants, check back because they will be updated frequently", but for someone like me, you might need to add a quick note that these are "only for a limited time" or "this month's specials", or whatever.
(I'm just as bad at copy as I am at spelling, so I can't come up with the best wording here. )
I would like to hear what other's think though, because I am viewing webpages with my own preconceptions... they may not be what the general public will think.
gotta finish redesigning my sites so I can show them again.

Karen.. I move the discussion about the "Hot Offers" to the area of the forum titled "Promotion and Marketing" I feel this area would be better suited for the questions, and our discussion to do with marketing.
Thanks Again.

That home page looks gooooooooood.. One thing tho.
In the area with the text boxes, radio buttons and so forth I'd change them to have the darker grey fill the background instead of having the lighter/darker combo. It's really busy on the eyes. The black buttons are fine, however.
You could move the logo (building, etc) to above the form area to make it more prominent.
Other than that it's great.

This DRM you speak of. I imagine you do a php (or asp) include pointing to their server? The concept intrigues me, so please correct me if I'm wrong.

The best I can do is offering my "guess" because I am not technical savvy. My work is more in marketing and networking.
DRM appears to be a simple script that calls the information (file) from the "Merchant's" server, much like pulling an image. This works well because the file can be update by the Merchant and does not require additional effort on the part of the Web-publisher.
The old method of just placing links or banners on a site offers poor conversions, and outdated material. Using the old methods the website then becomes a source of sending traffic to the homepage of the Merchant. Most Merchants homepages offers information about store locations, customer service/ direct ordering numbers, and cookies (tracking code imbedded) with a short life.. All benefits the affiliate network and merchant, but clearly puts the Web-publisher on the short end of the stick as far as monatizing traffic.
My effort with the Merchants is to encourage them to use DRM, and the landing page of the link to go to an "order page" of the special offer (not the homepage).. also that the offers, and promotions be of a special mature.
I find it slow going, but it is catching on.. I am testing it on my some of my pages by putting the Merchants in a category listing and calling it “Hot Offers” I may change the title to Hot Deals, Promotions.. in other words I am going through some testing.
Once I find the right combination I will expand it though the other pages.
I am glad I was introduced to this forum because it is a great source for feedback from others involved in the Web business.

Ok. So I was pretty much right. Thanks for the info. I may be launching a classifieds site for my local area, and this could be something I use for advertisers, if you don't mind.

Hey, Dawg:
I really like your site. It's better than Yahoo's. I like the idea of being able to find people and businesses, witout going through a lot of ads and pop-ups.
I'm a big fan of clean, fast-downloading sites.
Also, thanks for the suggestions you've made about my sites.

Once again I want to say I do appreciate the input that I have received from those kind enough to take their time to respond.
The partner page above is a good example. The page is to present a new idea of Networking “Special Merchant Offers”, and making content of Yellow Pages/ White Pages available to other sites. This helps Maximize the revenue from the traffic while adding value added content.. Plus operating as a Network increases the neogating strength to the benefit of the websites.
The page has been sent to a professional writer to make changes without infringing on copywrite material. His firm is familiar with copywrite, and has he mentioned everyone like to express themselves anyway.. it is like an Art form, and a challenge.. I do respect copywrite material.
I hope to have this page live within a week and once again thanks.. I hope to return the favor.
A good forum, like this one, can offer a valuable service.
