I like the simplicity. The header could be better, I dont like it at the moment, fairly fast in dial-up, faster in broadband... the light purple scheme is ok... the submit link form is also simple and I like it a lot, i wish I coud have that form... did you use any premade php link script? It works for your site... You just need to make it more professional looking but dont lose the simple feel...

There's not really much to review here. With a name like "Search Purple" I expected more purple but this is really quite boring. The big problem, IMO, is that there is nothing to explain why this site is unique. There are a bajillion web directories out there - why should someone use this one?

So what should I do to make it more unique and make people want to submit to my directory?

The site is very simple. You may want to add a little something to it. It is just a tad too blah. I also think you may want to add a lot more categories. The two catergories I always look for, shopping:classifieds and internet: photo hosting, image hosting or photo sharing, were not available in your directory. And, I didn't see a link to 'suggest a new category'. You may want to add that. I know I personally get frustrated when I can't find a catergory for my website. Good luck with it!

How does the new logo and color scheme look? And I finally added a "suggest a category" page.

seriously though, I agree with a lot of what is said above..

design-wise... it's a-ight..... the logo looks a little pixelated and amateurish.. the overall design could really "pop" more.. and overall, the name doesn't tie in with the theme.

where did you come up with the name search purple ? what does the purple mean ?
if you don't have good answers.. you may not be able to tie the name with the theme, i think.

professional looking, just try to make it more unique.

I personally think the logo is very dull and basic and doesnt look very smooth.

Also the search box should be in the middle (like google)

I have only a few perhaps not so important issues:

There is no alt-attribute for your logo - insert one (alt="Purple Search ..").

Your Links don't differ enough from "normal text". It should be easier for users to identify hyperlinks. Underline it or at least give them a better color.

If I click on "Top Hits" I see "Wholesale Checklist - http://www.wholesalechecklist.com" three times. Same with "latest links".

First impressions is it's a link farm, you know the ones that take over expired domains and try trick you into clicking affilate search links.

All your text and links are black, why not use purple on hover at least. Ideally the links need to be another colour.
The 'top hits' link show 4 results yet 3 of those are the same, and looking at the bottom of your page you have 'valued partners' with the same site listed there as well.
So my thoughts go back to affiliate link farm. Sorry but it's honest.

On the main page you have Business (11), I click on that and there is only 1 result in sub directory and no points as to who that site is, so I try shopping with 8 on the main page, sub cats show 1 and is that site again. One last try, surely they can't be listed under sports, well on main page sports has 7 listed, yet there is nothing in sub sections.
You have to earn ones trust.

1) I tried to fix the color issues a little. Any better?

2) I added my other site to the directory to a couple of different categories. Because it is the only link thus far, it is in all of the Top Hits and stuff, but once other links come it, my link will probably be gone.

3) The numbers next to each category = the number of categories + the number of links under them. Because the shopping section has 7 categories and 1 link, it has (.

I agree that the header should be changed, bit too simplistic on the header

The main thing I would suggest is that you add links into your search engine....trust me I know the work that is involved...we have under 3,000 links at DontFart.com and it takes time to organize them.

But, before you do spend the time I would be asking why someone would use your site/services. There are so many search engines directories already out there. You have to be provide something special....maybe index all things that are purple?....that would go with your domain name!

The script works...maybe its because your page cannot be crawled by spiders? This might be a problem for you because search engines cannot see your site...

Can someone else try to submit a link and see if it works. Im pretty sure its just your site but ill check it out....

Totally needs a niche... Its all about the long tail. (check wikipedia on long tail)

Yahoo or dmoz will never be beaten on this with a general scope. And I suppose social bookmarking will destroy those eventually.... Good job yahoo owns del.icio.us I suppose.

I agree with Megan, I own an Internet Service website and made a directory in seconds, it is a common feature, unless of course you make it special. Maybe you should try as hard as you can to expand it.

Things to keep: great simple home page, everything goes along with theme of "purple." Also, keep the page rank for all the results. Okay, that was my 2 cents, it is a good site at what it does and can be helpful.

I think this is a good-looking page, I like it. You can improve it.

Ok, so three months later, it has an extremely professional touch - I think atleast. I have grown the site to a PR5, but I still need more links. I think the layout is great, but do you have any criticism? Right now I am focusing on promoting the site.

Any suggestions on the layout or the promotion and marketing would be greatly appreciated.

i like ur website but i think you should add some images, and thumbnails for every catergory or link so your visitors may have a preview of what they're looking for and what they could get.

I think it's a good clean interface. The header image needs some work though, it looks like webdesign 1996. I would try and just smooth everything out. Jagged corners I think are harsh and make it look unappealing. I'm a fan of the whole web 2.0 design with rounded everything. It's softer, more inviting. Also the search button could be rounded and a little gradient around the side to make it look 3-d. Also make sure and have space for separating unrelated content, espeically the ad placeholder. Give it at least 20 px separation from anything else. I like the web directory links.

Anyway I think the overall layout of the page is good but the logo definitely needs work. Good luck.
