please review my site
I am redoing an existing website.
The current website is at
joyoflife.org.il
Here is the site after my design changes.
http://www16.brinkster.com/akohl/
Its just a start. Not all the links work yet.
I hope to get someone to make a logo, and add some
other graphics here and there.
In general, am I going in the right direction with this when you compare it to the current site?
Any specific suggestions?
I am particularly interested in suggestions as to how to format quotations and dialogues within quotations on the page entitled, 'rewards'. The texts are a bit hard to follow in a few places in terms of who said what to who. I want the formatting
to help the reader as much as possible.
Warning to netscape users;
There is some dhtml on start page which
probably wont work for you. This might block you from the site entirely. On the other hand, clicking the screen where you see a bunch of jumbled writing might get you past it.
Thanks in advance.

You're right, the first page is not working in NS. I also got "Error processing SSI file '/head/hebrew.shtml'"
I would do something about the nav bar frame so that it doesn't have horizontal scrolling in 800x600. Personally, I'm not crazy about frames and actually like the look of your older version.
On some of the pages and the nav bar frame, you apparently haven't specified a background color so I'm getting the default NS grey. On some pages you have just color and on some you have a texture for the background. I'd pick one or the other and make it consistent.
On the home.htm page you have The Joy of Charity at the top.
"The" is not underlined, "Joy of Charity" is, but the only word that's actually a link is "Joy". I'd make the entire phrase a link.
The text that follows is all underlined but not a link. I'd avoid underlining text that isn't a link because it can confuse people.
On the problems.htm page, part way down the page you change font size in mid-sentence. Why? There are also numerous errors on this page, such as "thaignorance" and "thoswho" which make me wonder if this was from OCR scanning errors.
You really need some graphics to spice it up a bit. As it is, you've got nothing but text and a book icon in your nav bar. Definitely needs a logo. And (I hope this isn't considered disrepectful) but since the site seems to be aimed at the Jewish community, how about some Jewish icons (Star of David, menorah)? Or photographs of charities in action (food banks or such)? Or in addition to text titles, have the titles in Hebrew done as graphics, since Hebrew calligraphy would work well visually as a graphic?
You have a worthwhile topic, but one thing I didn't get a sense of was just who is sponsoring this site. Is it a foundation or just a personal effort to urge people to give? Maybe an "about us" page would be a nice addition.
Good luck to you with it!

There's a couple of things you really need to get rid of - that opening animation is just chessy and pointless, and the patterned background is really outdated.
Overall I think you need to put more thought into this design. Everything seems to be poorly thought out IMHO. Take the colour scheme for example - you've got the purple sidebar and off-white body, and those colours work well together, but then you've introduced a whole bunch more in the menu and opening animation. The rainbow look is really, really hard to do well.
I've noticed that your content is done from a very Jewish angle and that kind of confused me at first. I was wondering why you're doing it like that, but then I noticed that you're from Israel, so that makes a little more sense. Still, you have to make that more clear from the outset.

My first observation is not bad. But here are a few points :
- On the Reward page you get a horizontal scroll bar at 800x600 and there is no background image as on the other pages.
- On the Essays page again no background.
- On the links page (I don't know if this is pulling up perhaps the old style page) but it looks very disjointed with the background image you have used. Make sure all pages have the same background if you are going to use one & would suggest fixing it so that it doesn't scroll with the page.
- When you return back to the home page the background doesn't reappear.
I personally don't like textured backgrounds! They just look really dated and unprofessional now. I would stick to a coloured background, I actually quite like the "seashell" colour you have & would stick to that rather than the texture.
I agree that you need some graphics to break the page up & give it some life. Photographs would be are good for this site as would changing the heading on each site to logos/graphics as the large text looks blocky and unfinished.
I also was unsure who is supposed to be behind the site - a bit about you or the group would add to the site an awful lot I think.
A good start but I think it needs to have a more professional look to it but with graphics/photos to soften the business/starchy look.

Well it looks better than the old one. That is not saying too much. I also agree about the opening intro. Ask yourself does it detract or does it add to the site. To me it is a common thing among us web designers to want to show off our skills. The intro does show that you are skilled but it takes away from the site. So I would either make it useful or lose it. Here are some other things:
Skip the intro, add some pictures, create a logo, resize the text and you will be on your way. The site is also a bit purposeless. Explain yourself better, have some testimonials, etc.

Thank you all for the help. Now I'm going to have to get to work on this site.
But first questions.
1)
how to I check to see how the site will behave on ohter screens, without asking you guys to look at it after each tweek?
And an explanation.
The reason I'm using frames is because I want
to avoid using tables for formating the article pages.
At a latter stage, I want to set up the whole site with asp pages and enable the owner to update content by setting up a manager's site which will present him with inputs for links and articles. I figure that It will be able to provide semi automatic html encodeing on this manager interface if I format the articles with a style sheet. Tables would be justa bit too messy. That's why I want to stick with the frames. But I definitely don't want any horozontal scrolling.

What size screen/resolution do you have your monitor set up to?
I have a 19" set to 1152x864 but that means that I manually resize the browser to view it at smaller sizes using the following typed into the address bar - javascript:resizeTo(800,600)
I use frames quite a lot and I certainly don't think they are a bad thing!! It's down to personal choice and I find them a hell of lot easier for setting up easy to use navigation, especially on a large site.
