Please review my online calculators website

OK, here it goes.

I've been working on this website for a good while now. I think it is pretty good, but it is time for someone else's opinion besides my own.

By way of introduction, a couple of years ago I was developing a website for a client and they wanted some online calculators on it. Well, I looked around a lot and found what they wanted, but it was from several different sources. So the end result was a hodge podge of interfaces, it was not a very nice, clean look. This experience got me thinking there is probably a strong need for a better group of calculators out there, all from one source, consistent look and feel, easy to customize, etc.

So here it is, my online calculators at www.WebCalcSolutions.com. Please review it and let me know what you think. I'm not looking for kind words but the blunt honest truth.

Thanks.

I would like to apologise for the lack of reviews of your site.

OK. You need more and cleaner graphics on your site. You've got an OK colour scheme and you're using and OK font. But these could be improved. Have a look here. I haven't got a look of time, but your real focus is updating from a dated look to a modern, clean, crisp, website.

It also took an age to get to the website - is the host you're using not very good? Also, you need to have a quick look at alignment. Should those two boxes on the front page be lined up?

In closing, I know I've already said it, but it takes an age to load.

More later, if I'm reminded (ie someone posts another reply and it comes up on 'new posts'!)

See ya.

I think you have a potentially useful service to offer, but your current site ruins that image (no offence). It looks very 1990's and outdated. I think you are better off getting a designer to completely re-design your site to make it look modern and attractive. Here some of the problems that I saw:
- the graphics are all low quality, and choppy around the edges
- why are you using JavaScript when you can use tags in some parts (i.e. Click here to see the full list of our calculators)
- some of your pages are WAY too long (full list of calculators) -- I don't think anyone is going to scroll that much

I hope I haven't been too harsh. You have a nice product, now you need a nice website to market that product. Good luck! =)

So basically you need to clean up the look of your site and re-organize it.

Hey heebiejeebieclu, thanks for the reviewing the site. They were all good comments.

I know the graphics on the calculators need a little work. I may be a good programmer, but I'll quickly admit I'm not a graphic artist. I appreciate the link to your suggestions about what a good website looks like. That is one thing about the web, there is always more to learn and ways to do things better.

Yes, the time the first page takes to load has been a concern. It is faster after the a recent visit, like it needs a good kick start. I'm using 1&1 for the hosting currently, and I wonder if moving to different hosting company might be the way to go.

I've tried for a long time to make sure the two boxes line up. In some browsers they do, in others they don't. The one on the left is a , embedding the calculator. Some browsers treat the differently.

Thanks again,

RussPete

Thank you kasrak for reviewing the site.

Wow a 1990's look, I didn't realize it looked that old. That's the good thing about looking in the mirror once in a while through someone else's eyes. OK, I'll look around the web some more (especially at the link heebiejeebieclu gave in his comments.

Quote: - why are you using JavaScript when you can use tags in some parts (i.e. Click here to see the full list of our calculators)

I used the javascript to enable a click anywhere in the big blue button to bring up the list of calculators page. I could use an on the text inside the button but they don't work around a whole table, which I'm using to line up the text the way it is. Also if someone clicks in the blue background area (anywhere in the box) and misses the text, then they still get to the next page. I'll look at just using two separate tags around the two sections of text.

I know the list of calculators is long, one of the points we are trying to make is that "there are a lot of calculators here". But perhaps we can make the same point another way besides a long page of them.

Thanks again for the input.

Great concept and a greater collection. Your site has the potential to be one of the few really useful sites people find online. However, the graphics should be worked on, and seriously. The site looks very old and is missing on the eye candy aspect. It would be great if you could redesign it using modern graphics and styles, people will love you if you do. People in this forum mentioned that it takes a long time to load, but it for me didnt, which I thought was good. It took much lesser than average websites do to load.

Again, a very useful website and has a great potential. Please try to redo with better graphics and a better look, its well worth it.

Best of luck with everything.

I aggree with save a faimily. Graphics are harsh. The credit card payment one really needs to be cleaned up. Simple things like no Doc type and the constand use of       can be changed to reduce code to content = better PR. I also think you need to experiment with a different color scheme.

We have fixed up the appearance of the website, lightened the colors, less harsh, etc. Let me know if you think it looks a little better now. http://www.webcalcsolutions.com

I Really like the layout of the site. I dont really care for the logo. I myself just dont like alot of clip art images, but everybody is different. I am just giving my opinion. I really like the detail that you put into the descriptions of the different calculators. Over all I think it,s a nice site. Once again I like the layout.

Site looks ok, but i wouldn't move from 1&1, i have been with them for a long time and they are very reliable and service very good. I have never noticed any problems with loading times on my site.

Site does look alittle plain.

you have a very subtle texture on the left, but none on the top.
if only texturing one, I would do the top first. Personally, I would
have something more in contrast with each other, emphasizing
on the top verses the side.

Text reading all the way to the right edge of the screen looks
tacky, not to mention it's an exhausting read, exspecially on
my 27" HGTV monitor. Wink You might try doing a right side &
using it for sponsors & what not?

As far as the look of the calculators go, some of them get pretty
intense. Might work with a small & large skin? You Might look into
if someone can put you something together like below?

Well that's my imput, good luck!

Your site takes way too long to load and it is virtually unintelligible while it is doing so. It may be a little old fashioned, but I have had good luck using tables to organize my site. I specify the dimensions in the table declaration and assign individual background colors as required. The text in entered using standard HTML and background graphic images are assigned. This results in a correctly formatted readable page being available in the browse almost instantly. It may take just as long to load the images and complete the page as your site currently takes, but you can read and use the site while the images are loading.

As others have mentioned changing your web host may decrease the loading time sufficiently that these measures will not be necessary. If you can find a way to view the site with a dialup connection, it may give you a much better appreciation of the problem. Personally if a site loads slowly I am inclined to go elsewhere.

As far as the load time, I just ran a check on the page and "Dialup 56k" Is 5 seconds. Is that really bad. I honestly dont even know anyone that still uses dialup connection.

I experienced a load time of around 30 seconds on DSL. It could be heavy web taffic.
