Please review: ACleverPenny.com
I've been tweaking this site for months and would like your opinion on what I've got so far.
The Featured Hot Buys at least twice a week - should I mention that on the home page?
There are lots of other sites like this on the Internet. I'm am trying to make mine different by having a cleaner design, being easy to navigate and by not featuring any animated banners or graphics.
Thank you,

Took a little bit to load, around 185kb on there which took over a minute on dial up.
There is a gap between the top buttons, the line and the content in mozilla. I had a quick look at your code but couldnt see anything that jumped out, maybe run it thru a validater.
You should also swap the font tags for heading tags (h1, h2 etc) as this will help you in search engine results (use CSS to adjust size etc to suit)
looks ok in Opera6 except 'store by cat', 'hot buys' and 'freebies' have a 1 or 2 pixel gap under them
I'd probably make the text under the items a fraction smaller, looks a lil bulky as the rest of the text is normal
apart from that look pretty good, wish they had the discounts etc here, could be fun collecting them (I think I made this comment last time lol)

Not bad. I agree with Busy about using H1 etc for the headings and it is easy to navigate and use. The only thing I don't like is all the centering of text.

Busy - Thanks, I will change the font tags to heading tags as soon as I get a chance to mess with my CSS a little. I remember you mentioning not being able to use the codes before, as did a few other people, so on the alphabetical coupons pages I have been slowly but surely adding [Ships to] for every single merchant and am about 2/3 done with that. It amazes me no end how many online merchants don't list shipping charges or destinations on their sites. There are quite a few I have to email and ask for that info. Maybe listing that info will give me a slight edge over similar sites.
I'll test making the text under the Hot Buys one point smaller. I purposely made it a bit large since so many similar sites use text that is so small I can barely read it.
Webmistress: Which text were you referring to when you mentioned centered text? I originally had text under all the Hot Buys centered but fixed that a few weeks ago (I thought). Please let me know which text appears centered so I can see if it needs to be fixed.
Thank you,

On the home page the main section of text is centered, as are the links and the text under each item. In fact as I see it all your text is centered and not left aligned.

Webmistress: I'm looking at my code and cannot figure out why those would be centered. Help! The did used to be centered, but I recently corrected that, or so I thought. Any ideas?
Thanks,

Hmm, can't see why either! I'll have another look when I have a bit more time.
As you are using CSS all your font tags should be removed and CSS used instead.

I see all as centered in IE6, left-aligned in NS6 and Opera6.
You actually have a good ol'fashioned center tag surrounding everything - starts after the body opens and closes just before the body does. Actually, I see a few center tags here and there as well as font tags.
It looks odd to see deprecated tags like these mixed in with xhtml syntax.

IE 6: everything looks good. left side nav is centered
Mozilla and Opera: left nav is left aligned and i see a small space (approx. one pixel) under the second and last two buttons across the top.
I noticed that you are using a Bravenet counter. If you don't want the Bravenet logo there you could try http://www.sitemeter.com. They have been around for years and it is real easy to set up if you don't want to mess with other methods.
I think your link hover color should be a more obvious change of color than the dark blue. Nothing wrong with how you have it now...just a personal preference.
I think taff got the centering problem. Remove the center tags. Oh and the font tags too.
Nice job on this site Deborah.

the center tags are around the table and around the valentines section, wont affect the layout. (there is one misplaced tag at the bottom of the side section - end of form)
It's silly old IE6
Also for the record font tags etc are still valid XHTML, there isn't much that is actualy "deprecated" until you start getting into XHTML 1 strict and above

Looks very plain, try add some interactivity to it or something.
Maybe rollovers for the navigation.
...Home is the only page where, the content is left aligned, the rest is center aligned...

Actually, "font" and "center" were deprecated by HTML 4.0 - strict, yes of course.

a tag can't be deprecated if it still validates.
according to some sites half the HTML 2 and 4 tags are deprecated when they are still valid in XHTML 2.
There are better things to use than font and center etc (use CSS instead) only because one day they will be deprecated.
we shouldn't be taking over this thread with this, want to take it outside lol

Good domain name.
Looks like you have spent a lot of time building up all your listings.
Does this type of site generate much revenue?

To Webmistress, Busy, taff and disaster-master:
Thanks for all your help. I think I have fixed the problem and everything should be left aligned except bottom navigation. Please let me know if I still have problems there. I tried to remove all the font tags too and use CSS only.

To Renegade: Thanks for checking out the site. Personally, I'm a big fan of the Keep It Simple Stupid school of design. I went with a clean, simple design purposely since other similar sites seem to busy to me.

To PipeTen: Glad you like the domain name. It was hard trying to come up with something memorable that wasn't too long. There weren't a lot of .com coupon type names available.
Right now I have 20 people on my mailing list and get about 15 hits a day which translates to appx. $25 a month in commissions after putting at least 25 hours a week in the site. I'm giving the site till the end of this year and if I'm not making $100 a month in commissions at that time I'm calling it quits.
I'm a stay at home mom and this started as a hobby. I don't have a penny to spend on advertising so am relying on word of mouth and the homemade bumper sticker on my van. Also looking into ways to promote the site free on the Internet. Wish me luck!
