It is just the basic design and I would like your comments on it, is there anyway I can get the effect of the black borders without using CSS? Oh, and please be brutal.

Thank you,

1) There should be bg colors for where the logo and menu will be.

2) It's hard to read the black mouseover text. I would also just make the actualy text change color, not the '-' part. Also- keep the ALINK color the same as the LINK and VLINK colors.

3) Why not try a patterned background? 'Cause the rest of the site reminds me of a bookstore, but there is just that one part missing.

Sorry about the link.

I added a background, what do you think?

As for the "-" and the colors of the links, the coustomer was pretty specific on those, and will not budge, and besides I think it is easier to navigate if you have different colors for LINK, ALINK, and VLINK

Hmmm- I don't know. Anyway, I just thought of something else: center the graphic headers for each page.

I don't know, I just don't seem to like it like that, to me it just feels like it interupts the flow of the page. The image also seems alone out there with nothing next to it.

Aeneas,

I like the background, but it doesn’t fix everything. The front page defiantly needs to be centered. The Books and Supplies page also doesn’t make a whole not of sense as it’s identical to the hours page. You may also want to put the Washington University name right on the front page and in the title.

You can make the black borders using a colored table border or by placing extra columns and rows on the sides. It’s hard to explain but it’s fairly easy to do. Both of these will be cross-browser compatible.

Okay, I see what you are saying about the Books and Hours pags, my mistake, they should not be identical, a slip up on my part.

I also understand what you are saying about the black border, and will gaive that a try.

What do you mean by the front page needs to be centered, like the "Bears Books" gif?

The Washington University name will come later on the the logo, and I will incorporate it into the font page in some way.

Thank you for the feedback.

The icons below are very cute. I like them.

Since you're selling books, maybe you can put up some snapshots of your latest books on the front page, otherwise your site will look very plain.

That is a good idea, and I will be sure to pass that along to the people who are paying me, but they have to have books first.

The client has expressed some reserve as towards the black border. What do you think, does it harm or improve the site?

The black border would work better with a different colour scheme. I like the patterned background, but the dark maroon colour doesn't quite go with the dark red in the nav area. Your colour scheme is almost there but just not quite right. Maybe you should try to introduce a third colour. The bright yellow for the vlinks is a problem too IMO.

Another change that should be made is to add a little more cellpadding. The content is a tad bit too close to the edge of the page IMO.
