My first ever web page ! !
Hi, I have finally gotten around to sorting out a site I have been thinking of for a while. I have to admit I had a look at some other sites for inspiration but the bulk of the design is mine.
I hand coded this in notepad, so take a look at the HTML also to see if it looks good.
hit me hard with your critiques !!!
(just to mention, the main content of this page I just filled with some text for the time being. When I have designed all of the other pages I shall fill it with changing recent fitness news)
What I thought is I will duplicate this page so that the left and top bars stay the same throughout the site and then just the main content part will change accordingly.
Thanks.....

This is a really good effort. THe colour scheme is nice, and the layout is simple and functional.
A couple of things:
1. The colour scheme doesn't really say "Muscle and Fitness" to me. Something brighter would probably be more effective.
2. You should have some muscle/fitness photos or clipart on here somewhere - maybe that will be incorporated with your logo?
3. The yellow on the hovers for the top links needs to be changed - you can hardly read it over the grey
4. The corners on the logo box need to be fixed up - the one in the lower left is missing, and the colour on the other three doesn't match with the neighbouring table background.
Overall it looks nice, but a little boring - this look seems to be becoming a standard in a way. More exciting colours would help.

1) The layout and design is very nice, especially for your first try. Now you just have to improve the small things...
2) I like bullets, so why not try adding them to the left side menu?
3) The bottom left half circle on the top table is missing. Also- most of those small images are a little blurry. Try increasing the image quality.
4) I agree that it doesn't say muscle/fitness. Why not try integrating that into your logo, which would be nice to see sometime.
5) I hate that yellow mouseover color. Yuck!
6) This is a little picky, but why not add a little more space between the left navigation bar and the main content area?

Cheers for the comments.
I'll take a look at the color scheme (was just trying to keep it simple) and also s**** that yellow mouseover for a more appropiate colour or just s**** the mouseover altogether.
As for the corner of the tables. I was going to leave the bottom left like that but if you think it would look better on I'll change it and see what it looks like.
I did this at work and the corner of the tables were quite sharp and exactly the same color as the table. (I did them in photoshop so I made sure the color code was the same!!)
But I see what you mean as I am now on my Dads laptop and they look fuzzy and another color. Come to think of it the color of the table background even looks different. Why is this ? The quarter circles are JPegs, is this why ? When I used Photoshop it just optimised them as JPeg thats why.
As for the kind of boring layout, its what I was trying to achieve in a way. I wanted something quick to load and easy to navigate and get information from. I'll have a think of something to liven it up though. When it gets going the main page content will change and will have more images in.
Thanks again for the replies, and keep em coming ! ! !

Quite nice actually, but looks a little plain. Get a sponsor, put up a banner, and maybe that will spice up your page.

Can you take another look at this one.

Are the corners still another colour and fuzzy ? Hopefully not as the colour is NOW a web safe one, and I have redone the images in photoshop better and as gif's.
Cheers

The corners are messed up in netscape. They appear to be the same colour, but they don't match up.
I love the design. Simple is good. I perfer the you first choice of colour too. It's not possible to read the left menu in a high res though, the text is too small.
Great work over all.
