Mairving.com
It has been a couple of months since I have done this site. So I just thought that I would throw it up to the wolves here for review.
Now some disclaimers:
(1) The border - I don't normally like nor use a border but in this case, my wife insisted. It is the border that is up in his nursery.(2) The colors are quite juvenile but also similar to his nursery colors.
(3) The Kids font was also a suggestion of my wife.
In addition some of the pictures are somewhat grainy at higher res since my camera doesn't perform well in low light situations.

I think that the border is the best part of the design. It really gives it some character. The childish theme is entirely appropriate in this case. If it wasn't juvenile I'd think there was something wrong. No need to appologize for those elements.
Wow, lucky kid to have such a great website all about him. I like the casual font as well - your wife has good ideas Maybe try to spice up the title area a bit? Could you maybe enlarge the animals from the border and put one or two of them up there? Another thing to think about is the alignment on tge pictures page. Maybe try to tile those in a grid rather than leaving all that blank space on the right side. Either that or put a photo there.
I may have a family site up for review myself in a few days....

Well glad that you think so. That border gave me some fits trying to piece it in. I originally set it as a background in the body with a y:repeat, so that it would scroll vertically. Well that was no good since at 800x600, the table would lap on top of the border. So then I stuck it in a table. But I had to keep repeating the image, so that it wouldn't cut-off in higher resolutions. Well then I came up with the solution, to put it in a table and use the y:repeat and it worked fine.
Lucky parents to have a kid like him.
Probably right on that one. Originally I had his footprints up there. Then a couple of his pictures, then ended with nothing.
Yeah, that is also needed. If it where just simple HTML, I probably would have changed it by now. But the code is a little complex. Right now on the picture page, there is a caption that comes out of a text file. Eventually I will port it to a database and add a comments area.
Thanks.

I think your wife is a wise woman, looks good
few things thou, the recommend and add to favorites should be at the bottom, no one would bookmark or refer it before they look over it.
Also the name, shouldnt it be Mairving Jnr.com ?
The foot prints I think need to be smaller, unless they are actual size then maybe say that they are.
Maybe add the links to the bottom of the page as well.
I like the way you have done the next and previous thumbnails, but the main pictures gives a scroll bar at 800x600
site wont load in Netscape 4.7, loads ok in Net 6 but is very jumpy with no width and height tags.
*would love to rack your brain on how you did the PHP side of it, I'm still learning PHP and trying to do something similar with pictures etc*

Yeah, I am going to remove the recommend part. I was just kind of playing with it. Moving it to the bottom may work.
I originally bought the domain for him. When the babies name was finally ironed out in the 8th month, it turned out to be a match.
Yes, they are actual size and he does have big feet.
I don't know if I can do much about the scrollbar with the current layout, since it is the border causing the problems.
What! What version of 4.7? I am using 4.78 in windows 2000 and it loads fine. I initially had some problems on the picture with NS not displaying properly but that had to do with some of the includes that I am using not closing tags.
The picture gallery was initially from a script that I downloaded called PHPPIX or something like that. I liked it since it generated it's own thumbnails. There is not much left of the script, mostly just the thumbnail creation and the page nav's.

just using Netscape 4.7, mine could be the version before yours.
I have it on CD (came with internet connection CD), I saw 4.78 offered as a download on the web somewhere, maybe I could "update" hehe

that's a real nice site, the only thing lacking was a simple title (our son ...) that clearly told me what the site was about. i had to start reading that paragraph to figure it out.

I like the font that you are using for the title on the home page vs. the one on the picture pages. It fits the site better. I like how you did the colored scrollbar. I'll have to try that one. Didn't notice anything else other than things that had already been mentioned. I like alot.
This kid is a camera ham already. He is really cute mairving. Congrats!!!

Colored scrollbars came about in IE 5.5. Don't work in NS or prior IE versions.
Here is what you are missing.

busy, busy, busy. you poor thing. scrollbar deprivation could be hazardous to your health.
i was complimenting mairvings because he has his scrollbar track the same color as his background of the page. first time i have ever seen anyone do that effect. the picture that mairv posted really doesn't give you the full effect.
here is a pic of mine. my track is a lighter purple than the actual scrollbar. this will give you an idea of what he has done.

I usually use the colored scrollbar to make the scrollbar somewhat invisible on a site that doesn't really require scrolling.

Hey, Busy, I went back and tested the site in NS 4.73 on my Linux box. It loaded and worked fine. Not sure what is causing problems with 4.7. The javascript should give no problems and the stylesheets should be ignored.
I guess that I am going to have to have a special Busy 4.7 version of the site.

Its really a very good site and that it may be the only one of its kind ie. on a cute baby.
It was really very good to navigate your site and also the graphics were adorable.
I agree that the name of the site should be some what descriptive or at lease you should add some short description below it so that it describes the site.

Hello,
I like your site. It got to the point and was simple to navigate and know what was happening and where you were. Everything was aligned and the colours matched, what else to say but it is effective for the purpose.

Hello,
I visited your site @ mairving.com and it worked well
I agree with a number of other post here that the border really works for the site, it is consistent with the content and offers visual continuity as the pages are viewed. I also think the "kids font" helps to convey the essence of the site. One additional feature that might be nice for users is a slide show, maybe several, organized into theme based "albums". Good luck

cool, nice one!
i like your site, simple, clear, and the colors are just matching! perfect!
just i have a small remark. it would be better if you keep the same font for the logo (mairving.com) on all the pages. i found that you are using different font in the pictures pages!
nice one, good luck.

Yeah, he pretty much tells us when to get up, when to go to bed, when to eat. He hasn't really quite advanced to the state of telling us what to post. Currently that is my wife's job. You'll find out one of these days, Jack.
Well the main reason why I don't have a more descriptive title and such is to give it a little obscurity. Sadly this world is not a great place to be sometimes. Giving a visitor too much personal info about you and your family is not neccessarily a good thing. This concerns my wife much more than me.
Thanks for the comments.
I have thought about a slide show before. It may be something that I will consider on the next major update. There are pluses and minuses to slide shows.
You should fit it rather well here at WMF, with a big mouth and all. Thanks for the comments.
Well the only way that I could use the same font on all the pages would be to put it in a gif since the font support for kids would be kind of low. I assume that you are meaning the page title Matthew's Photo Album. I could do that as a gif with no problem. The other thing that Megan brought up about the alignment of the pictures. Right now they have a vertical alignment. As there get to be more categories, this will be a problem. So I will have to change the way it is currently displayed. I could change the whole image and use the kids font, but right now, those categories are merely directories. I just create the directory and drop the files in there, and voila thumbnails are created. Thanks.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that. I have a header and a footer file. When I built it, I created two different headers and footers, due to the page structure. Which I should have done differently anyway. I was testing the logo on the home page as mairving2.gif and forgot to change it on the other header page. I think I am going to redo it so that there is only one header page, which will fix that.
Thanks.
