Just bear in mind it's early days
Heya,
I've finally got around to working on a new project of mine i've been threatening to do for the last year.
Edit:Oops it's http://sengoku.co.uk
I'm really just looking for comments and ideas about my colour scheme/layout at the moment. The links don't go anywhere (yet).
I can almost smell the 'too much brown' coming
I'm thinking of giving the left hand links a background of some sort to make them more 'button' like. I also have to decide on what they will actually be (I can decide this once I know more about what the rest of my content will involve).
This layout will pretty much continue through the whole site using the same header, navigation e.t.c for each page.
Oh and I can't decide if it's worth adding a footer or leave it as is.
Please bear in mind my html knowledge is pretty minimal before suggesting somethig too extreme

Definitely put a footer containing your copyright statement. It can be nothing more than a small box in the main content space, it doesn't need to be a major part of the design!
Overall the design is pretty nice, pink and brown work quite nicely together.
My only complaint would be the menu as it's pretty plain and dull... try spicing it up with a small icon or bullet next to each link, although saying that for a site with a lot of information, plain links work pretty well.

That's a great start!
I really like the shogi (sp?) screen. That's a cool look. When I think of Japan I think ogf kimonos also - colors. You may want to add that to the look!

I agree that the menu looks a little poor. But in all it looks like a decent design!

Thanks for the feedback and positive comments guys
Done. I might try and make it fit a bit better at a later date but for now it will do.
Also Done. Eventually I might look at having each link looking almost like a wooded signboard or something but I think it's more important to get some content in there now.
Thanks Brooke (yeah it's Shoji ). On the other pages there will be pictures which will add some colour to the site. Also I'll look at maybe adding something to the left and right background. Maybe some rose/plum blossom or bamboo for example. Or I could have different stuff depending on the topic of the page in question... i'll have a think.
Ai, it is that. Hopefully the new bullets make it a little more visually appealing. I'll look at taking it further at a later date.
Edit:I've just added a wee favicon to the site too now

Looking good! just make the bullets a smidge smaller or a bit lighter in colour, they're a bit overbearing at the mo.

Cool cool, bullets are now slightly lighter and smaller... Good call on that one Andy. I've also de-linkified the navigation bar so that only the 'home' link actually does anything (although that obviously just loads the same page). Now the links will only work when there's something to actually read.

I like the colors. The framing might look good if you can imitate bamboo. It would also add some great colors if you could place a banner across the top with a photo of a Japanese garden. The greens would go really well the rest of the color scheme.

Looks good, should be better once you have the website finished.

Yeah I like that idea, certainly for the text border. It's a little out of my league with regards to my skill with Gimp but i'll have a pop at it when I get a chance.
Do you mean the top of the whole page or the top of the text content area? Maybe I could have the Shoji doors opening up onto a Japanese garden behind, that might be nice.
I do think a wee bit more colour would help. I've made a few changes to the code so that the background of the main page is separate to the (originally part of the 'wooden frame' background was a body background image). Now the body just has a colour atribute (the pink). could perhaps get some extra colour in there.
Thanks, I agree. I'm starting to look at the rest of the content now so no doubt as I do, i'm going to get more inspiration. I also want to improve on the look of the graphics (they are pretty basic at the moment).
All this feedback has help massively already as well. Thanks everyone

but I`m only really saying that cos I cant find anything else to say...
it`s good so hurry up and get some content cos i`m looking forward to reading it:)

Thanks dude. I'm working on it as I speak. Been a bit busy recently though. Started emailing around for permissions to use photos too so should have some pics soon as well =)
