Hello webmasters!

Here's one of my many attempts at a site. I'm only new by the way, so be gentle. All critiscism (i think that's spelt right lol) will be greatly received. by the way only a few pages are made.

Oh, and it's a freewebs site so you know it's gonna be bad.

here it is!

Really all I want is the homepage judged, the others are a work in progress.

P.S. I luv the smilies on these forums :cartman:

Thanks for pointing that out, Chris Smiling We do request that everyone review some other sites first - you saw that in our posting agreement. We'd appreciate it if you would follow the guidelines there and review some other sites. If there is some reason why you can't or don't want to do this please let us know. If you need some help in writing your review we have created these tips for writing website reviews. You dont' have to be a great designer to write a helpful review. In fact, often the most helpful feedback comes from regular internet users.

Ok, I'm going to go easy on you because you admitted that you're new to this. I'm just going to tell you the rules of webdesign right now:

1. People have to be able to read your page. So you have to have colors that contrast enough for your visitors to read them. I litterally am not capable of reading your navigation links. Your banner is shaky. Blue on Black BAD blue on blue ALSO BAD

2. You didn't violate this rule, but you came close and I don't think that you were thinking about it, you just coincidentally didn't break the rule. Make sure that important and interesting content is above the fold. That is, make sure that what you wnat your visitors to see right away is there without them having to scroll down.

3. You NEED to validate your html and your css. You also need a DOCTYPE on your html pages. use http://validator.w3.org/ to validate your html and http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/ to validate your CSS. This will do some wonderful things for you and make you look more profesional to people like me who will be critiquing your site.

4. The farthest right image is over the middle image as is the text below the farthest right image. You've got to fix that. I can't get at your CSS source code, but I think you've got some work to do on that.

5. Your banner is boring. That should be the most interesting thing on the site, but it needs some flare. I'd make it smaller. That punches a little better. Smaller is generally more interesting. Move your lion over to the left, change some colors.

I'm sorry but I have to aggree with the above comments, I could not spend too much time on the site because the amount of dark blue was getting to my eyes, It was very difficult to read black text on blue background, the Heading is too big.
Don't get disheartned by these comments, just keep plugging away and you will get there in the end.
Ray.

Thank you for the helpful comments, .

I'm gonna try to fix all of the problems as soon as possible.

And, I have to say, I agree about the colours..........but what colours go with blue?!?!?!?

And I also have to admit I'm not too good at making good layouts for my sites. I can never really tell what looks good where and what size of image is good etc.
But, I'll keep working at it and improving my skills. Thanx for the help!

Ok, as far as a good color with blue, Yellow is great. You want a little bit of a darker yellow. I really like the color ffcc33 personally. It's the background color of my band's page. It looks pretty good on a blue background or as the background for blue text. As far as design, it's a lot of hit and miss. You want to see a terrible site. Check out this one that I made a couple of years ago http://www.geocities.com/chris_nahnos/home.htm yeah, that's right, it's an HTM page! However, the colors here are all clear, and the scrolling situation is under control. Obviously, it's still a pretty terrible attempt, and this was after aproximately 2 years of HTML/Javascript/CSS/XML experience. Design comes in revelations and is really easy to learn if you copy a successful site for your first few attempts. Good luck in the future.

ok first off,

i have no idea what your site is about, but that is irrelavant, the only problem i really cant stand with you site is the blue links in the black bar along the top. those are hard to read...

but otherwise not much, just keep working at it, and dont be afraid to look at other websites for design tips.

If you're new at this then i say you're on the right track. Of course you should follow the suggestions provided to you in this thread.

Also, try expanding your knowledge about web design, there a lot of good tutorials out there .. all you need is time .

The others have made some good suggestions here. I'd also add that it's good to hang out at a forum like this to get ideas and learn more about web design. You can learn a lot by turning a critical eye to other sites here in the critiques area.

As you know, I have a problem with small font sizes. You've also used a low contrast text colour here so that adds to the problem. Just because you can distinguish the characters doesn't mean that it's easy to read! Also make sure that your main text is always left aligned. Centered text is hard to read because the eye keeps having to jump back to a different spot on each line. It's okay for smaller bits of text, but even that generally works better in print.

About your colour scheme, here are a couple of tools that might help:

http://www.wellstyled.com/tools/colorscheme2/index-en.html
http://www.colorschemer.com/online.html
http://www.webwhirlers.com/colors/wizard.asp

Something similar to this might work for you (maybe with only one of yellow or orange, and you could still use the gray you have). Spend some time playing with that tool though, you can learn a lot about colour theory there.

I find that it's best to have a lot of contrast between colours, so if you're using a dark blue, use a bright yellow or orange for contrast. Less saturated colours look more sophisticated while saturated colours are more fun and upbeat. Think about the kind of message you want to send.

The homepage link in your signature is much better than the thing that you gave us the link to up top. It's still a little lacking in that the menu bar looks cluttered and that black text on blue back ground. Maybe if you lighten up your background a little. Say use grey or something for your backgound color. That should help you look a little better.

There some good things and bad.
The good:
1) The home page is manageable in size That is, one does not have to scroll (much) to see it all.
2) I like the centered contents. And I like blue.

Problems:
1) It appears you have attempted to organize content with layers inside of tables. The telltale sign is that when then window is resized horizontally, strange things happen. Some graphics move, others don’t. I don’t think you will ever have any luck putting div layers inside of tables and getting predictable results.
2) Though I like the color, there is no contrast on the nav bar. (and I have a good video card and monitor). OK, the type can be seen once you hover over it, but that is not adequate.

I know were both beginners but here goes.

You really like blue dont you??? I checked out both versions of your site, I like the old one without the white banners at the side.. You still use blue a lot too... And BTW you could have done better with the graphic text, I notice some pixelation... Other than those it would be better. I havent checked your codes, maybe when youre really finished I'll check it out...

I've been working on this site for a bit now and I think it's coming together quite nicely. Now, for those of you that saw and remember my last site, it was in shambles, the HTML was all wrong, the css was really bad aswell, the colours hurt your eyes and some other things that I can't remember. But at least I tried Smiling now, onto the new site. I made this site because I found some people on the internet wanting a clan site, so I thought this would be a nice little project to help me start HTML. Now I've been learning HTML for a few months, and here's the fruit of my labour. Hope you enjoy! I encourage you to look at my source and pick out every last thing that annoys you. I'm a big boy I can take it. Just rate me like someone who's new to HTML, but has a general idea what they're doing.

P.s. Some of the pages aren't finished yet. I wanted to here your opinions before I finish. also, the login won't work. this is because I'm learning PHP and I want to do all this myself. Plus, tell me if something looks wrong on your browser.

P.s.s. On the members and information page, the writing goes beyond one page, and the menu seems to come with it. Can some tell me how to stop this, I tried changing the height of the but it doesn't seem to work.

The link is: http://www.freewebs.com/thebluelions
Please don't be put off because it's freewebs, I found another host that's free AND supports PHP without any banners, just 1 ad, but I couldn't be bothered moving the sites at the minute :csaw:

at least you have a skip intro link, thats a bonus, no idea what the flash thing was, dont have flash installed.
You need to watch out when copying and pasting HTML, and naming files, %20 is what browsers, search engines and others use for a space, so do, others just ignore it and move on. dont use spaces in page names, not finished.html should be not_finished.html
also on your form you have a %20 before the http:

You have a 'valid CSS' image and link on your page, why not make use of the CSS and do get rid of the font tags at least, there is a bit there that could be replaced by CSS. ALso don't use width="100%" on images.

As for the actual pages, not one, but two scrolling marquees, one is bad enough but one on either side is crimnal Wink
The idea is there, just a bit of fine tuning needed, like making all your links green and something on hover instead of having darkblue as link colour now as it doesnt show up on the blue background. link size also needs to be bigger.
