Hi all, newbie here.

Something I'm kind of nearly ready to go ahead with, it's for a bet so VERY important, definately more important than any work you may be doing anyway. It's a long story but involves a beer fueled arguement and me having to learn mysql, php, javascript and xml. It'll all be worth it for the £2.30....

Basically I need to dry run it a few times and am looking for feedback on all areas (well I'm no graphic designer so that bit probably won't improve!). Any feedback on the theory is not really appropriate for here and requires more beer first, so content, look, feel, etc only please!

Comments/feedback/unrecoverable sql databases/new konfablulator fans all welcome! (oh and I know the guestbook is crap, I've just not quite got round to putting a decent one on yet.)

Thanks in advance,

Me!

Hi,

I am new to web designing myself but these are my comments anyway.

a) I feel that the moving objects at the top pull your eye away from reading the text.

b) The fact that the top section is always visable makes the section that has the text in it quite small and rescricts the eye.

c) The fact that the background is white and that the text is black makes it very simple, but also slightly dull.

d) When put into the w3 validator there are 17 errors.

Apart from that i feel it is a well created site.

Somehow you have to show that the top part that doesnt move is seperate from the rest of the page....even a simple line would do.

Like markerpen, I think some kind of color scheme would help. Maybe some simple graphics/graphical headers or something.

Somehow isolate the title - it looks like its just floating up there with everything else.

Good site though!

Although on the face of it frames page layouts have advantages there are in fact major negatives. First of all, accessibility issues and perhaps not as important, search engine positioning. Search engines and text readers see this:

Am I Sane?

The Sanity Experiment.... This page uses frames, but your browser doesn't support them. All a bit of a bummer really!! Don't really know what to suggest other than getting a different browser - IE or Mozilla work well!

Definetly something you should sort...

Cheers,

I dont like the use of frames and everything seems a little cluttered. Try making titles on the content pages stand out more.

The animated gif images are a bit too distracting.

Thanks guys, good starters for ten.

I kinda thought that frames would have been accepeted by now as general use, but I bow to your greater knowledge so maybe some style sheets and more php on the way....

I'm no graphic designer so I take all your comments on the graphics and layout on the chin. I'm surpirsed on the fact poeple don't like moving images, but that's cool, I can fix that dead easy. Dullness yes, I agree but I'm a network designer not a graphics designer so don't really know what to do - suggestions more than welcome!

W3 validator - all points noted I'll work on them. Full admisssion to not having passed it through. (I'll also admit to using frontpage in the main (with notepad as backup best editor in the world) - hence errors!!)

Search engines - points noted - again not an area of exertise but its surprising what can be done. Anyone got any good suggestions for non frames based frames like pages? How do people do this normally (ebay/dell, etc)???? I'm assuming php with a header/footer and then content from an sql database or something but it's a whole new area for me! Can't be hard cos other people do it.

Titles on the content pages - yeah point taken, I thought the same. It's really quite tricky all this! I'm impressed I've managed to do the PHP and SQL from scratch to do the real purpose of the site but all the intricacies are what makes a goodun.

Basically I think you've told me what I already know - dull boring and kill the frames but it's nice to hear it from other people.

Thanks for all your efforts, much appreciated and I'll see what can be done (or more realistically what I can actually do!)

Cheers, will check back soon......

Hi,
Clever idea.

Frames=go. Make a nice heading with better nav images and spruce up that logo. Not bad the way it is, but too small as it gets lost in the rest of the stuff.

Try a little color and formatting on your rant pages.

Keep at it!

Have you ever been to this site? http://www.i-am-bored.com/. It'll keep you busy and out of trouble for a looong time.

ok i might have been a tad in polite before. let me try again.

i like the idea of icons with the links but try and make sure they are all similar style and of good quality. In addition the link text is very small on firefox mac, could you make it bigger?. i dont think the logo stands out well with the coloured graphics below, maybe make the icons B&W or have a big AM I SANE? vertically down the left side of the site.

The thing that struck me was the fact that the lines of text were too long. i kept jumping from one line to the next. Perhaps some sort of box on the left side with some information in?

Interesting subject matter. It looks a little "loose" to me. Too much just floating around the white page. I would tighten things up a bit. Funny concept though.

I agree with some of others that it seems like things are kind of just floating around. I am not sure if it was mentioned, but your 'rants' section doesn't appear to be working. Overall, it is easy to navigate and the content kept me interested. I was so odd, I was intrigued. Smiling Also, maybe add some more color. I think it is alittle too white.

Hi all, thanks for all your comments. I have chucked up an enchanced version of the site that certainly feels better to use. Hope you like, if you don't tell me!

Cheers,
