Welcome TWF Sam, glad you like the forum.

This posting will be moved to the critique section as you are requesting a review.

In the meantime can you help us out by participating in some of the current threads in that section as we do ask that you review other's sites before posting your own. Not a requirement but other's will be more likely to help you if you help them out with a fresh pair of eyes on their site.

Ok, site critique.

Very plain and bland. Certainly needs something to spice it up. Maybe some graphics & a new logo. The one you have is very hard to read and looks chopped off at the bottom of the text.

Is this a personal site or will you be using it to get website design work in?? I would loose the 'Personal Website' bit especially if the forum is going to be about website design/scripting/tutorials etc.

On all the pages, except tutorials & cool links (I don't like that phrase), you get a small annoying horizontal scrollbar.

You have content, now jazz it up a bit and add some colour.

Don't know php so can't help with that part Wink

I agree that you should focus more on what the site is about and target your branding accordingly. You definitely need a new logo - that one just looks jaggy and ugly.

Overall the design isn't really too bad. It could be improved quite a bit though so keep working!

I like sites that as soon as you enter, you know what it is about. Graphics are nice and all, but I mainly want to know what I am looking at. A short sweet sentence at the top of the page can generally do it. Even a couple of words, "Search Engine" can say all you need.

The site is kind of bland. Not saying you need graphics but just play with color. Try to catch the attention of the web surfer as quickly as possible. Your site looks a bit amateurish and this will turn a lot of people off.

My two cents....

Too things come to mind Plain and Slow or shall we say Plainfully Slow.

No idea why the site was so slow, apparently it looks like a heavy drag on the server. Here's what I would do:

  • Logo - that logo has to go. It is bad English and painful to look at. If you are going to use your name, you must make it look more exciting. It is too big, doesn't go with the rest of the site and has the infamous "hair around the edges".
  • Navbar - the navbar looks okay but why use gifs when simple text would do with some CSS rollovers.
  • Deadspace - so much dead space. Add a top or bottom bar or some images to give a less plain appearance.
  • Page layout - one page, your portfolio page, stood out. Some of the text is left aligned, some is centered. It looks kind of odd. Your Home link goes to home.php, which is a 404, shouldn't it go to index.php or /?
  • Code - your index.php yielded some nesting errors. It is often times difficult to keep the html right in php since you don't see the page until the server parses it.

It needs some spice to it. Also this is in your source code;

Quote: We're sorry but you've reached a Microsoft IIS hosted web site that uses frames

I don't know if I would be telling people that with Code Red & Nimba running rampant.

You also asked about some php tutorials, One I'm using is http://www.scriptschool.com/php/ its a 16 part tutorial that they did last year, teaches you the basics up to advanced and is great for people with no programming experience, they also have assignments, basic and advanced to do. there is a forum but since its was done last year I doubt youd get much feedback, but its there so you can view others results etc.

It doesnt do a forum as so, but does teach you enough to have the knowledge to have a go at makeing one.

Otherwise do a search for PHP
