Hello everyone!

I am working on a design for my son's school website.
Shoals Elementary School layout

I would love to have your oppinions on anything that you think could / should be improved on it.

Right now I'm just getting the design together so the page content isn't in there at all. The links all work since it's a php site, but I haven't set up the database for any of the content yet.

I do know that the clipart is way too jaggedy looking. I will be fixing those back up and fixing the blackboard on the image on the homepage.

Also the counter is only a placeholder right now. I'm avoiding putting all the scripts on just yet, so I simply have the number images I'll be using to see if it look right.

I'm trying to make the navigation easy enough that non net parents will be able to use it, but interesting enough that web savy people won't roll their eyes (too much).

Let me know all the problems and mistakes you find.
I always appreciate all the help I can get! Laughing out loud

gotta finish redesigning my sites so I can show them again.

The blue triangle looks a bit out of place with all the rounded images.

I'm not sure if the numbers on the home page are supposed to below the visitor number thing.

The yellow box has pieces cut out, and on some the of pages where the menu text gets too long, it cuts off the text.

The "Contact Us" link is partially outside of the green oval.

There is also no "home" link. I had to think for a second before clicking on the school house (And I'm one of the most web literate people in my town (Yes the town is very small)).

Don't forget a copyright!

Thanks so much for the suggestions Dragon of Ice!
Here's what I was trying to do. Ok.. I may have missed the mark a little. Wink

Yea, looking at it I shouldn't have rounded the corners on the yellow box. (force of habit I guess). The idea is primary colors (red, yellow, blue) and simple shapes (circle, square, triangle)

Yes those numbers will be the ones I use for the page counter. Right now I just have them in as a place holder until I feel like putting the script for the counter on.

I'm not sure what I've done wrong there. Could you show me a screenshot please. I will probably turn the yellow box back into a real box again and not worry about the corners at all.

I didn't make the background for the top nav the widest it could be. On a really wide screen the nav will be overlapping the white background. Perhaps I should make the green part wider.

Sorry, I'm just so used to making the logo the link to the home page, I didn't think about doing it another way. Do you really think it needs a link labled "Home"?

Ahhh... yep... you're right about that. Lot's of "bits" to finish for this.

Thanks again for the advice!

I'd get rid of the astricks * in the navigation. Also like that guy said, the navigation links on my resolution (1024x768), goes outside the green oval. Maybe you deisgned it for 800x600? It looks better on 800x600, but a lot of people don't use that crappy resolution. The images aren't too pixelated, but if you could fix them it would be better. Over all I think it's a nice site for an elementary school. Smiling

Yes I really think you need a link labeled home.

Strange thing is, in the screenshot you posted the box has rounded corners. When I look at it, it's just a square.

EDIT: I see up there she said she got rid of the rounded corners, which would explain why I dont see them Laughing out loud

BTW Karen, I noticed you fixed the problem w/ the green circle. Looks good.

Thanks so much for the feedback Script and Dragon of Ice!

I did square the box back up again (really didn't need those round corners) and fixed the green oval. I also added a Home Page link and put a little copyright on the bottom.

I so appreciate both of you taking the time to look at this for me and letting me know what needs to be fixed! Laughing out loud

I still have to fix all the clipart back up, but I think I'm a lot closer to having the template for this site done. If you see anything else you feel might improve it, please let me know (yes I still have the astricks there. I thought they would be something different than the standard pipes to seperate the links).
I know this isn't an award winning type of template, but I do want it to look good.

btw Dragon of Ice thank you so much for the screenshot! Even though I'm not using the background for this one, it's helpful to know not to rely too heavily on that for future templates.

PS: I was going to drop a note about the updates earlier today, but in-laws are visiting so I have to sneak in my computer time whenever I can for a few days. Wink

Well, I think I have all the clipart fixed now.
I know the coding for the blackboard picture on the home page is very sloppy. I can fix that up to be right later.

Let me know what you think and if what you see that can be improved.

Thanks so much! Laughing out loud

I see that they teach human-blackboard fusion at this elementary school. Sign me up!

LOL! Ahh yes... the biology teachers latest experiments... do you think the school board will go for it though? Laughing out loud

Thanks for heads up on that goof. Hopefully putting the link where it's supposed to be will unfuse human and blackboard. If not... I guess I'll have to add a note about the "special" classes at the school. Laugh

It looks fun and has the right feel for a school website. I have to agree that the blue triangle does look a little out of place, but other than that it's perfect.

Wow I love the graphics so perfect for a school. Really fun site with a great approach. The only thing I noticed that could use some fixing was on the left side navigation: Some of these dont allign right and the arrow is overlapping the text below it See bold text below. Let me know if you see what Im talking about. Keep up the good work.

» Preschool
» Kindergarten
» 1st Grade
» 2nd Grade
» 3rd Grade
» 4th Grade
» 5th Grade
» Hearing
Impaired
» Physical
Education
» Music
» Resource

Thanks so much gekkie!

Yea, I've got the spot for the subnavigation set to a fixed pixel width so it doesn't expand when the text gets wider than that.
I may adjust that if the school decides to use this template.

btw: Thanks for the compliment on the images. I wish I'd drawn them. (it's weird to make a site with someone else's illustrations). They're from clipart.com. I love that place! Laughing out loud
