Hey guys, i know i posted a review a while back for my gamecube cheats website, but I am sick of the current layout and have decided to alter it, plus since i made a REAL logo, i decided to base the layout around that. The link is gamecubecheats.net/Brandnewlayout/gamecubenew.html

It has no content, like in the middle, but it has links (they take you back to the original site, so i recommend not clicking it unless you want to see a difference). Any feedback is appreciated.

Also, if you could, let me know what browser/version you are using.

Thanks

Bryan

p.s. Why does opera not like the border=0 option:) I know it has to do with the fact i have my 750x600 table (i think thats the height:() and that is the only table, and i have that table set to border=1. The rest are table cells. That is probably the reason, but honestly it doesn't look to bad in Opera with the table lines.

I'm using opera 6 and it looks quite good. Did you mean to ask about the bordercolor option? It seems to me that the bordercolor attribute is the one not workiing in Opera - my guess is that this is because bordercolor a non-standard attribute (not sure about that though) and therefore isn't supported in Opera. Try using CSS to style your border instead. That should work.

This site looks really nice. I like the mix of the grey base and colourful (but not too bright) logo. The only thing I can complain about is the header buttons you've used on the side columns. The fonts on there look really distorted for some reason. Like in "Topsites" the first S looks too fat/wide but the last S looks too narrow and squished. I also think that the beveling on those buttons isn't quite right.

Another thing you should try is not centering those columns - keep them left aligned with a little bit of padding on the edges. Also make that nav font just a little bit bigger, and maybe add a little more line spacing.

Thanks Megan

Well, about the font, the reason it looks weird is because i am keeping it as teh Gamecube Font. i downloaded it and installed it so i could use it on my logo and any buttons. I could shrink the lettering a little, but that is how the font works, it shows it kinda weird, as you can see in the logo. I will work on the behevling/emboss.

Thanks again

not really sure how to do cell bordering with CSS

The logo looks fine - it's just that text on the buttons that looks weird (and that doesn't seem to be the same font as the logo either...) Are you sure those are the same fonts? Weird...

For a a solid black border you'd do this in your CSS declaration: border: 1px solid black;

I think it looks nice. I do not like that font your are using on the graphics for the menu, poll, topsites and links header but I know that you want to keep this. In my opinion, I think your logo has enough branding in it that you don't necessarily need to use that font through out the rest of the site. Have you thought about maybe making the beveled graphics a brighter color to bring out some of the colors in your logo?

I also think part of the problem is that the font is 14 for the buttons. I have changed it to 12 in photoshop right now to see how it looks, and it looks better. Just wondering, what is wrong with the button. You said it looks weird or something, being beheveled? I think it has the coming out look or roundness look.

I think those buttons are too.... chunky looking. Try narrowing the base shape a little bit shape, then lower the distance setting on your layer effect and/or increase the blur setting. Try some slight variations on that... Also consider getting rid of the black outline.

bordercolor is an IE add-on, even CSS wont make it work on all browsers, if you want a border you're better off using nested tables adjusting cellpadding and spacing to suit.

a couple of browser problems.
IE5 - the 3rd image under topsites isnt displaying

NS4.7 - the white content area is about 5 pixels wide, this is probably due to no content so should resize with some. has table borders. the "poll" and "menu" buttons are up top, hard against the table border

NS6 - the poll is overlapped, the poll options go over the tables edge making it look very messy, also the font seems different (check your css layout). the menu and poll buttons are away from the table border

Opera6 (as Opera6) - there is a small white line under your banner. poll and menu hard against the top, also the poll font is different.

that 3rd image isnt displaying on any, all this checked on 800x600.
Instead of the light grey, thought about another color? purple maybe to carry on from the banner. the light grey is letting the look down.
its looking better everytime - keep up the good work

I like it! I have the same critisisms about the fonts on the buttons and that the buttons look a bit old, chunky and jaggedy. Get those right and the site will be great.

Julia - if life was meant to be easy Michael Angelo would have painted the floor....

I have made some changes

1. changed the buttons, much smoother, look much better,
2. fixed the banner situation with the white line, it should be.

Now you can let me know more input

thanks

Yes, that does look much better. You do have just a tad bit too much drop shadow though. Can you see where you have cut off the shadow a wee bit at the bottom?

Don't make your drop shadows so prominent and dark. Try one with a little less offset to the shadow, the opacity a little less and maybe blur it more. Take care not to cut the shadow off when you crop the image.

I don't see the white line you mentioned. Looking at ya in IE 6.0

There, that should look much better, i lightened it up quite a bit. I agree. Its weird, you know, when i view this stuff, i think wow that is excellent, and then when you guys see it, you are like, well this and that.... and then i am like, wow, they are right, that does kinda suck. So thanks
