This is my site for a shareware product that I developed. Downloads are so-so and conversions are lousy. How might I help it???

Welcome to TWF, xavier! Thanks a lot for doing some other reviews first. We do appreciate it Smiling

Now, about your site: Ack! That doesn't even look like a website, it looks like a print ad or a CD-ROM presentation! Start over, looking at real websites as examples.

Start with a good logo and navigation menu. The current configuration would be fine, but the design needs work. This should be the heaviest looking part of the page. It sort of anchors the page at the top and provides basic information (what is this and what can I do here?). You may want to hire a professional to design the logo. It's a complex process that isn't easy to do well.

Keep the content area simple and try to pull out the benefits of your product. Why should someone download this? What are the benefits? Are there any special deals available? "Free" should receive some emphasis instead of being treated the same as other text. You could make a jazzy button of some sort to advertise that. In terms of conversions, you need to make it worth their while. The site should tell them why it would be worthwhile to register the program.

Also keep away from blue text, blue makes people think of a link, but blue on blue doesn't go down to well.

You also might want to change your download estimate time on the download page, a 5.5mb file would take something like an 1 - 2 hours on 56k, not 13 minutes.

Hi xavierj!

Well, I can't tell you definatively why you aren't getting conversions. I will point out the things that seemed confusing to me.

First you say that this is a shareware product. Let me just say Bravo! I'm a real believer in shareware! Laughing out loud
The problem is I would have never known that from visiting your site. I know you're trying to convince people to pay to register the program (which is totally fair), but the way it is set up, it looks like I would have to buy it. No wait... the Buy Now link takes me to the Register form (which would really confuse me if I didn't already know this was a shareware program). Alright then I go to the Download link. Ok, I can download it, but it says Try Debt Consolidator Pro. Does that mean the program will die after so many days or some of the features are turned off? I'm not sure if I want to download a program that may or may not even work.

The other problem I have is I actually have some idea of what most debt consolidation programs require, but I don't know what yours requires or how it works. If you could tell me some of the features of your program (especially if you include screenshots... I like screenshots) it would help make it more clear.

I'm an Apple user so I doubt I would be using your product but I definately wish you the best of luck with this! Laughing out loud

gotta finish redesigning my sites so I can show them again.

The purpose of education is... to get more jokes!

You're probably not converting because the site looks like it was banged out in an hour. There are no screenshots of the product, no customer testimonials, no evidence that this is real.

The "awards and press" text is not even a link - that says to the user that there aren't any, so don't even put that text there. When you do get some awards/press, then put the link up.

Try to incorporate more information about the product, a picture of the packaging, the cd, and some screenshots.

On the product information page, you say "It can literally save you thousands of dollars in interest" - show some sample calculations. You have to prove upfront in a typical scenario how much someone can save. That's the selling point of the product, so that's what you need to shout about.

For a new product/brand, you have to inspire confidence and trust and there really isn't anything "solid" about the site. If you're a member of any financial institutions, or any online trust inspiring organisations like BBBonline.org or truste, show those logos. If not, then at least post a privacy policy.

There's no link for potential customers to contact you with questions and there's no installation instructions.

It's hardly surprising that you have low conversion ratios, because there really has to be a lot content on the site to inspire confidence in the user.

No offence intended... just offering some straight to the point observations.
