Woot! Another one off the checklist (at least for the most part). I have this site basically done, I've done everything that I can do for now. I've got 1 page left to create, which is just adding content, and about 2 or 3 more that I need to get the content from the client. I had to do all the content so far, which I was a little disappointed about, but this person knows nothing about webdesign, she's my first client, I need the portfolio, and she's terribly busy as it is, so I stepped up and wrote it all. It may not be great, but at least it's there. Tell me what you think on the design, and pages with lots of content can also be commented on with content.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
I will have nightmares about that colour scheme for the rest of my life!
"Services" doesn't work, and I hate the lack of information on the front page.
Sorry, mate, but this is not one of your best websites.

Is the scheme that bad? She wanted purple, so I tried purple and blue, purple and yellow, and I thought the purple and green worked. If you look at where services goes, it's just a #. It's the only page I have yet to build. I don't exactly know what their services are. What kind of stuff were you thinking for the front page? I gave that opening paragraph and was thinking maybe a letter from the Librarian?

Letter sounds good. Give it a shot.
I don't know about the colours. They don't seem good but they don't strike me as as bad either. It works functionally, maybe not artistically.
In fact, that would probably apply to everything in the design. Can't complain that it all works as far as serving a decent web site with info. Aesthetics aren't bad... just nothing special.

Yes, It works functionally but not artistically. I would suggest that as this is a library site, artistic would be good.
The letter would be good...something personally welcoming users to the site.
Arg.

I have something to add to the comments already made (although I do agree with the majority of what's been said so far):
1. I must compliment you on your use of semantic markup, HTML and CSS... A good sign!
2. You've used HTML, judging by your code you're ready to use an XHTML DOCTYPE.
3. I can see you've used a few hacks in your CSS (always needed unfortunately - mainly due to IE's lack of standards support), and these need to be tested in different browsers, the design is a bit flaky in Opera7.5/Mozilla Firefox 1 and simply doesn't work in IE5. I haven't carried-out an exhaustive investigation of what's causing the problems, let me know if you need that.
4. There definately needs to be more content on every page, this is not your fault, it seems your client needs to become a little more interested in the project!
5. At the moment this seems very much like a work in progress, both in terms of design and content. In my opinion the site is developing as it should be, but the underlying design/CSS definately needs work.
6. A small problem with tag: div id "left" you might want to call this something different, it's not a good idea to describe the way something is going to look in your (X)HTML, that's the remit of CSS . Imagine if you changed the positioning of that tag to the top of the page, a name like that would only cause confusion!
Hope this helps.

Ok. Aparently no one else likes the purple and green. Anyone have something that will work with a true purple, as the librarian requested?
Jeeves:
1) Thank You!
2) Are you saying I should start switching to XHTML (which I've been planning to do for some time, just haven't gotten around to it)
3) Yeah, I had to use some hacks for IE. The only thing I saw in Opera was the secondary links don't look right. I don't see what's wrong in Firefox, considering that's what I built it in.
4) Agreed, I'm still working on that part.
5) I'm not quite sure what you mean? I'm sure my css code is a bit sloppy (I'll clean it up when I get the time, I'm swamped with homework right now). What about the design (other than colors)
6) Good suggestion. I'll take that into account.

I'd say use a lighter purple where you have the dark purple background and white in place of the green.

She seemed to like it (but she also mentioned that her house has those colors, so she's used to them).
Jeeves, how are you seeing the site in IE 5 (or how would I, I upgraded) I have IE6 and I don't know how to have both on my site at the same time.

I've had a couple looks before posting and I think the colours do grow on you...maybe if you made the pages a little busier…they just seem a bit empty.
I think you need something at the top of the page that lets visitors know who the site belongs too. I like the logo (CCL), but I think what it stands for should be there as well.
oooh....ooooh....one more thing, the link at the bottom of the page, oragnedrop goes to inkspot....I think it's time to make a decission.

I know, I'm going with orangedrop, I just haven't exactly built the page, and I wanted to test out the little multicolor thing.

Dragon... you might be interested to know that you can actually install older versions of IE on your computer (from 3.0 right up to 5.5) for testing your site.
Obviously theres not really much point ensuring it looks good in IE3, but it's good to make sure it's still usable in low end browsers. If you drop me a PM I'll give you some details for my FTP server where you can download them (I also have a copy of lynx as well which is good for accessibility testing).
