update2: http://fly.to/bam

update: Finally finished the template (although I still have to work on the flash file to replace that middle image). I think the final one was my 7th or so iteration of it. Here it is, any crits?

Final (I hope...)

It's only the templates but I'm already getting pulled around from members in the group and friends back home about the design. The site is for an interest group we are starting (in hopes of later receiving a bid to start a chapter of a nationally recognized fraternity). Anyway, the site won't be updated much after the first upload session except perhaps the events/schedule page.

Version One
Version Two

After I was nearing completion of version one, I showed some friends back home and they all complained that it looked too much like my personal site (which has been down for over two weeks. Stupid host...). So I decided to try to force myself away from my old habits and that's where version two comes in. I like version two a lot more now after staring at it for a while. I intend to replace the bluish middle part (statue of liberty and flag) with a flash file when I get around to it... All text and information will be going into the black areas underneath the blue section...

So what do you guys think?

I prefer version 1. I think that one is more logical than version 2.

I like the logo and the template a lot... IMO u should not change anything at all Smiling

Well, I'll go with version 1. Menu at the top is very usable and it should stay up there, especially if you are planning to add content to the page.

I really can't decide. Version 2 is kind of funkier, it's got more of a defined sytle. I like the look - it's a little on the busy side but overall it looks pretty cool. The other one just doesn't seem to be as coherent in terms of design style. THe logo isn't working that well with the sleeker scan line look in v. 1 - the rougher text look in v.2 works better. Maybe you could try to find a better location for the menu in Verion 2.

I too prefer the look of version two although I have to say both are very busy and in-yer-face! Maybe it won't be quite so much once there is text/content there.

I like v1 better. It's a lot easier to look at - it doesn't hurt my yes and the links stand out more.

I don't like this one as much as the other two. I think there is too much contrast between the white and black in the content area especially when compared to the lower contrast banner thing with the photos and statue of liberty. I also liked the old logo better - it was more interesting. I do like the navbar on this one - almost. There should be a little more contrast between the text and the background - right now it's just a little bit hard to read.

The low contrast banner thing will be replaced by some flash animation... hopefully by next week.

What if I went ahead and replaced the black content area with a lighter shade? How about a light gray? Dark gray? White all the way through with a border? Any ideas?

The top menu bar, I'll work on upping the contrast of the buttons... anything more interesting I can do with the roll over?

I like this one even better except for the black square, that should be white IMO (or at least the same color as the sidebars Smiling)

I agree on what Megan said about the navbar's contrast.

And I don't understand the reason for placing the dragon, but I guess u do Wink

I'll try changing the content area to white. The dragon... I might actually take out from the side bar or make it fade even more. It's pretty tasteless. The use of the dragon was brought up because a couple of members told me they wanted some sort of dragon on the site... I'll see what I can do to change the roll overs. The red isn't a bad idea, but I'm looking for an even greater change. Otherwise, the use of the images for the rollovers aside from the font issue would have all been a waste of load time.

Look awesome in IE, love the design, the hills bottom right make it I think. The top picture (horses?) is a little dark, bit hard to make out what it is.

in Netscape it has a couple of layout problems, the bottom right (where the cool hills are) theres a black gap, and on the bottom left (where the text is) "University : Brotherhood" has a white background going into the black.

the flat border looks good in IE, border=3 doesnt look so great in Netscape.

am very interested in seeing this site finished, well done

I changed the content area to a less contrasting color, but it made my eyes just float around the page. I think the black makes it stand out and a target for your eyes to fixate on.

The dragon on the left bar, I made it fade even more now... and the menu has been changed a little. I made the rollover's darker with red font.

Busy, what version of Netscape were you using? I don't have access to a computer nearby with netscape on it (except for the clusters which is always full of people...)

Some content is up now, and I'm still working on the Flash banner and trying to learn ASP right now to make everything dynamically (did I spell that right) driven. Posted in the database forum about how I could pull records out and place them in one of three categories on the same page depending on the date compared to today's current date. So if you guys have any links I could use, hook me up =D. Thanks for all the help people.

I usually use Netscape 4.7, but have version 6 as well, dont like the title bar on that, cant right click and paste.

the table thats not lining up only has two cells, the white from the far right is sitting on the left edge of the second cell, maybe add another cell like the main table above it.

I think you need to introduce another color for you heading etc in the black section, like the events page is hard to work out what starts and stops where, yellow or red would suit
