Brand new site... -
I have just completed my newest site and would love any comments anyone may have. www.HostFacts.com The host search engine is a little empty right now... but it just opened yesterday. I'd love comments on the overall layout, colors, design, etc.
Thanks

Justin,
Great looking site! I love the way you have setup and modified the UBB forum! You have a great talent and FQ is lucky to have you I think that once word about the site is spread, it will quickly grow into one of the "premier" places for honest hosts to be listed. I am very glad to finally see a directory that wants to list honest hosts. Keep up the good work.

Justin,
I really liked the site. Loads fast and is very clean looking. You might want to go to www.javascriptcity.com and see if John has a mouseover script that works in Netscape. Yours didn't work in Netscape 4.5.
Other than that nice site

I really like the site so far. You have added a unique flair to it that I haven't seen at similar sites- the tutorial section and the forum.
The bandwidth tutorial was informative, well done.
The layout of the site is pretty straight up and down, but since it is clean and informative it is effective.
The red font for the title of each section doesn't seem to match quite right, with the rest being blue and black. I can see the reason for the new color (the subheadings are blue, nice) but maybe a blue that is darker than the subheadings but not quite black would be nice there. Just a thought, the rest seems to match well
Overall, a clean and informative site.

Thanks for the comments - I will fix the Javascript in the morning (need some sleep tonight ) My entire goal for the site is to promote the honest and mainly the smaller hosts, which the two seem to go together for the most part.
I chose red for the main headings thinking I needed something to offset the blue - I can edit that color with one quick change though (love php's include command lol) and will probably play with a darker blue or something.
There will hopefully be more tutorials there, and of course if anyone wants to contribute to that section, just drop me an email
Let me know if you spot any more errors or design flaws, etc. It's much appreciated

The mouseover works in Netscape 4.5 also. Hope you got some sleep.

Justin,
I have only one suggestion (but it's a good one, honest!)
- I notice that each section has a red text note to its title. I feel this idea would be better used if the button with the section title (currently already found above this text) was simply highlighted in its appropriate section to serve the same use. See what I mean?

Ok, I made the main heading text black underlined instead of red. I would do the button thing, where the button is a different color or just not linked for the page you are on, except that all the navigation is in a header and footer file. So it's the same for all pages.
I could probably use environment variables to determine what page you are currently on, but that would be extra work. On top of that, each section has more than one page, so if you are in a tutorial, you can click the tutorials link to go back to the start of them, and same for the host search...
I agree the red text did throw the whole blue look off a bit - I was looking for some contrast but that was probably a bit much in that area.
I also fixed the rollovers and they work in Netscape 4.08 here - I forgot that you have to put the onmouseover event in the <a> tag, not the <img> tag... IE works either way though...
Thanks for the help, and of course I'm always open to suggestions

Hi Justin,
Very nice site - you did a great job. I just have one comment.
Everyone has been talking about the red text titles (which I noticed you changed). Well, I don't think they should be text - it doesn't look very clean. I noticed that your forum page has it's own title bar without the main logo at the top. I like that - I think every page should be set up that way. The only thing is that the forum page does not have links to the rest of the site and I think it should if possible.
Sorry if this sounds confusing...I just like the layout for the forum page the best and would like to see it continued!

You know what? I like that a lot better! I wasn't sure about the word Tutorial in the first place, as it sounds almost patronizing (sp?) to me (now that I think about it). I will definately rename it to Articles tonight.
About the heading, I really am lost as to what to do about that - no matter what I try it always seems out of place - but I don't want to just get rid of it (or maybe that's best?) - hm... not really sure. Maybe a serif font would help - I wouldn't say I'm losing sleep (not a lot anyway lol) but it is bothering me a little...
I will add the navigation buttons (or maybe just text links at the bottom) to the UBB, but because of the way the UBB is set up I think it will involve more hacking - but I do want a way back into the rest of the site without having to hunt for it.
The reason I went with a "straight up and down" layout is because it seems like every site on the web has links on the left, content on the right - which usually works well, but I always like to be different. Plus this way I can add the link buttons (maybe) to the UBB without making it too skinny.
Thanks for all the input - you guys have been extremely helpful

Hello Justin,
What a great resource! Couldn't have been posted at a better time for me since "hosting" is what I'm researching at the moment, and your bandwidth tutorial should answer my "question of the day"
I think you have a very professional clean look, and should be expecting much success with your web site. I agree with Brooke about the "Heading" text, maybe smaller, or blue like you mentioned? Possibly even a serif font, I can't be sure and it's "minor" ---don't lose any sleep over it .
I'm curious if the topic "tutorials" could be replaced by "articles"? I'm more likely to look at an "Article" now and save a "tutorial" for later--when I have the time. For some reason the word "tutorial" (for me) requires more "work/time" then an article.
I hope that made sence and I would like to know if anyone else has an opinion on that.
Thank you for the great resource!
take care,

I tend to agree with Carolyn -- To me a tutorial is an "article" that teaches you HOW to do something. An article is paper that teaches you something. Tutorials are, like Carolyn more of a hands on do-it type thing where an article is something to just sit back, read, and absorb the information.

Re: the heading it is a shame that you can have the changing graphic per section instead of the font heading. That would seem like the best solution.
