You all know the drill - some of you probably remember me and hate me. I think. Could be wrong. I'm late for work as is right now, so I'm going to make this quick.
Most of the code has been already validated - so no need to tell me about that. That's not really a critique or a review. It's just you looking at code and then feeling better about yourself because you can validate something or go to a website and then copy and paste what they tell you is wrong.
Not trying to say anything mean, just letting you know.
there are 2 errors - I haven't had time to fix them yet because I'm late for work, so once again I know there are a few errors.
The rest is up to you.

A little busy. I'm not exactly sure where to look first. I definently look at the picture first, but then I'm confused. I guess after that I got to the horizontal buttons right above it. They feel out of place for me.
Push the login box away from the right egde a bit, and give it some style so it fits better.
Give the little intro paragraph a title like the rest (the Webmaster, Awards). Other than that, all I can say for now is nice site. I'm sure I'll be able to collect some more thoughts later.

To correct your arguement my friend, if anyone is viewing your site using a w3 compliant browser, then it is critical that your code validates for the browser to parse it correctly.....otherwise what's the point, how do you expect users using w3 compliant browsers to give you a fair review?
And to be fair, I believe that you are shooting the gun a wee bit too soon there, nobody really is going to make a big fuss over 1 error, different if it was say 100, but not 1....
That aside, the structure looks simple and effective, however too much white, will make your eyes squint after a while......
Similarly, try opening up that fixed width design abit.......too much white on the right-hand side.
Cheers
