Alright, this how it works - the Web Developer Menu is a drop-down added to the main program bar with HTML 4.01, CSS 2.1, Dom/JS and Unicode drop-downs. THese point to the W3 specs for HTML/CSS, Mozilla reference for the JS stuff, and some other site I've never heard of for the unicode stuff. So, just a set of quick bookmarks to go to the specifications when you need a reference.

The Web Developer toolbar replaces the view menu (the one that pops down from the address bar). It includes a pop-downs for Display (same built-in stylesheets, plus some extra options and the ability to resize the page), Images (same as before, but with a few extra options), Page Info (DOM inspector, that sort of thing), Utilities (various internal and external tools), Validate (includes accessibility checkers & more), Specs (includes what's in the Web Developer menu and more), Page Source (includes ability to view generated source and external scripts), a ID switch (Opera, Moz, IE as usual), a quick jump to Firefox and IE, and a Pagerank tool that doesn't work very well but it at least there.

Best of all, you can customize which buttons are there. I forgot to mention that there was a drop-down for forms as well, which I took out.

Ooh, the display menu also includes an option to change the font. Don't like the crap Times New Roman on that site? Want to see what your design looks like in Georgia? No probs, change it!

Heres one for you Megan, is there anyway to change Opera's preferences so when you right click and open in new page the focus remains on the page you clicked from, rather than going to the new page? Is so damn annoying that, reminds me of IE opening new windows all the time.

An example, opening new posts from the 'new posts' link (up in the twf navigation - top left for folks who don't know of it)

You can right-click and open in background window, is that what you wanted to do?

Like firefox does, right click open in new tab or in operas terms, open in new page - not a new window and keeping the focus on the original page.

It's only a small thing but big enough to stop me from converting over

Heyup Busy, you giving Opera a go? Smiling

All you need to do is right-click on the link and select "Open in background tab" instead of "Open in new tab" It's the next item down. I like both and use them interchangeably without even thinking about it. Not sure if there's a way to make it behave like that by default.

I think it's a reasonable assumption that when opening a link you're going to want to view the page immediately. Smiling

*** EDIT ***
Just had a quick rummage in opera:config and couldn't find anything to change the default behavior.

On a more successful note: Middle-clicking on a link opens the tab in the background. Smiling

I've had Opera for yonks, went from IE to Opera but then found Firefox.
I think the ads put me off Opera, then the dom problem (this is going back a while), and Firefox has grown on me. I do use opera to test sites and some sites that have no image save that actually works on FF I can use Opera to grab them.
The web developer bar in ff was also a good pulling tool, but as opera now has something similar ...

Is Opera a personal preference thing, or is it yet another thing I should know about but don't?

Opera is a web browser. It has many more features built-in than any other browser available. Check this thread for some more info about what Opera has to offer. It's really more of a power user's browser. You should check it out Smiling

Some of us here are really big Opera fans so you'll find that we talk about it a lot.

It certainly is something you should know about! Smiling Whether you choose it as your browser or not you should definately install it on your PC and use it for testing. It works on Linux, OS X and that other OS I forget the name of. It's also, by far, the best browser for a mobile phone or PDA.

In the words of Abhishek Reddy:

Quote: It stands head and shoulders above its chest

(Although I think he borrowed that from Clive Anderson)

Anyway, it's great, and we can't stop ranting about it. Am worried that at some point DaveyBoy is going to go mad if we carry on! Smiling

Jeeves - have you noticed what it adds to right-click? Awesome! Under Edit Site Preferences there are some Web Developer options and Advanced Options. So you don't even have to make that toolbar visible, it's all on right click!

Actually, I think some of the advanced options aren't even in the toolbar. They have Find Page Owner via whois (nice), backward links via google, view in split screen mode (also nice) and a bunch of other stuff. Bug me not! I was looking for that last week but couldn't remember what it was called.

I SO love this! Need a heart smiley here Laughing out loud

What you should really be asking is why you can't access the advanced stuff from the toolbar Wink
