What's your favourite FTP client?
I'm working on an article for beginners about web development software. I'd like to include some recommendations for FTP clients to try. I don't normally use FTP if I can help it (prefer to connect directly through natulius). For those of you who use FTP software, what is your favourite client and why?
Good responses may be quoted in the article!

There used to be a firefox extension called FireFTP, which was what I used. It was great cause it meant I didn't have to open another program to do my FTPing.
Lately though, I've been using (Win)SCP for my file transfer needs.

I use CuteFTP Pro, just because I bought it years ago, however for not on my own system, I use FileZilla, very robust and all the basic features you can want.
CuteFTP does offer more features, but it isn't free. It does offer having more than one connection open at the same time, allow you to edit text files (both local and remote) right in the program, tons of features like automated syncing of local/remote and many more, but to be honest, for a beginner, will probably be overkill
I know back in the day (13 years ago) WS-FTP was the biggie at the time, it's interface is what lead me to go find CuteFTP though.

I use WinSCP too. It has a drag and drop interface and let's you chmod files and directories (what FTP client doesn't?). It also sports direct text editing. But more importantly (but probably not so useful for beginners) it lets you use SFTP, SCP and regular ol' FTP.
I used Filezilla for a long time. But I switched to WinSCP when I started needing SFTP.

On the Mac side, Cyberduck is a popular one. There's also ftpfs, which depends on MacFUSE and lets you treat FTP sites as mountable filesystems. MacFUSE is based on the Linux FUSE package. FUSE and MacFUSE provide support for all kinds of interesting filesystems, such as sshfs, GrabFS (screenshots as filesystem), NTFS-3G (writable NTFS on Linux and OS X), ZFS, btfs (basic bluetooth functionality as a filesystem), WikipediaFS (yeah, you heard me), tagfs (a media filesystem using tags as pathnames), YouTubeFS, MySQLfs and SQLFS-Fuse. Not that many of those are beyond alpha.

WinScp is very good. It is SFTP, S=secure.
It is free.
Filezilla records your unencrypted pasword on a file somewhere, which makes it,
apparently, rather unsafe.

FileZilla is great because it is free and frequently updated. However I used to and still use FlashFXP, it is a paid for software with a trail, but I like the fact I can FXP (File eXchange Protocol) between servers, wich is great when I want to send files from server to server.

I used to use IPswitch, which is great, but I learned about FileZilla from a friend, which essentially does the same things for free. Needless to say, I switched over to FileZilla. It works great on both PC and Mac. You can have multiple connections active at once in separate tabs, which is convenient for me, when I'm going back and forth between multiple projects.

I use Filezilla...
Your FTP client uploads and Download speeds do not matter what client you use its all about what provider you use. That is where the speed matters because if you have Comcast residentual service your getting a 1.0 - 2.0 mb upload depending on your area and on a business your getting between 2.3 - 3.5 mb up. Now as for DL you always get the best speed from a Comcast Business with unlimited up and Down.
So it all just depends on your service provider to be honest........
