What does it mean to embed a file and what does doing this achieve?
I have some large powerpoint presentations and someone suggested that embedding them would help them download faster - is this true?

Embedding a file just means that the file is incorporated within the page, like with flash files, rather than having a clickable link to the file.
This will not make it any quicker to download at all as it just means that the files will start to download when that page was opened rather than when a link was clicked, it isn't going to reduce the file size which is all that would make it quicker.
