What is a document layer?
I am finding many sites on the Internet with tutorials on manipulating document layers, however when I search on what it is I'm having no luck. So if someone could give me an explanation and perhaps a link to a further explanation if they know of one I would greatly appreciate it.

If you're talking about HTML/CSS, you may be referring to a Z-index. There's some info here: http://developer.mozilla.org/en/docs/Understanding_CSS_z-index
However, different graphics file formats and graphics editors have layer information as well. So I'm not really sure what you're referring to.
More info, please.

Might you be talking about document.layer? That's an old JavaScript construct, really forget about it as it was proprietory to Netscape.
I presume you're searching in Google? What search terms are you using?
