What Do "Webmasters" Do?
People with the job title of "webmaster" often have a variety of duties, including web design and systems administration. They can also have management duties regarding budgets, presentation, purchasing, and human resources. Sometimes they have technical staffs and sometimes they work alone.
If you're going to a job interview for a "Webmaster", you should definitely have a complete job description beforehand.
I've talked with several webmasters over the past few weeks: One of them is a designer who daily posts his modifications to the company's web site and then checks the statistics. A second person at the company, however, is the systems administrator and he handles OS configuration, server hardware issues and backups.
On the other hand, another person I know does all of the things listed above! His job title should be CIO, but it's "Webmaster."
If you currently work on your company's Web site, I'd be interested in knowing what your job title is, or what other duties you have. (No, I'm not hiring, just trying to write an article.)
Thanks, in advance,
Roy

I'm a sort of webmaster on contract. Because that job is immediately terminable, the only "title" I'm given is that of "web designer".
My duties involve designing/redesigning, effecting updates, content edition (image manip., copyediting), graphic design, coding the backend, frontend, and side-end, database management if it comes to that, but not server management. The usual chores of maintenance, such as checking stats, are implicit.

According to dictionary.com, the definition of 'webmaster is, "A person whose occupation is designing, developing, marketing, or maintaining websites."
This is a multipfaceted subject. (: I would say there are a lot of webmaster who do a lot of different things, and there are also a lot of system admins who help take care of company websites.

IME, there are so many different definitions of webmaster that the term almost becomes meaningless when reading job descriptions. The one tuffy posted from the dictionary is broad enough to cover almost anything! I think part of the problem is confusion among non-web people about what building a website actually involves.
Edit: And what tasks can reasonably done by one person based on an individual skill set.

Not at all. I have competitive rates, am a local face they can look in the eye, and have a solid reputation for getting the job done right the first time. That makes a big difference in this job.

Well what is it that you have tried so far? I find that word of mouth usually does the best Having a site up with links to sites you have done might also help
