This guy found my email address somewhere, and he wants an estimate. I have no idea what to tell him. I said I charge $50/hour, and I would give him a rough estimate of what the project will cost. This is his website: edmtechcenter.com

Here is what he wants done:
Web Site Updates:
Easy to update by EDM Tech Center – What’s New with dates
Post tech bulletins and specials
Future shopping cart
How to order information (like Schweda’s)
Search engine improvement
To much Mitsubishi now – need to cover all brands
Competitors Web Sites
edmsave.com EDM Sales & Supplies

advancededm.com

schweda.com/consumables

Good information on how to order offline

alternativemachinetool.com

graphel.com

edmsupplies.com

belmont4edm.com

edmstore.com
Some of it I am not too sure of what he wants. But does anyone have an idea of what I should charge him. I have only done one freelance website job, and that was actually done per hour. He wants an estimate for the whole project. Please help, I need to get back to this guy as soon as possible.

Thanks.

Discussing actual prices is not really legal, if I understand correctly. But at the risk of sounding obvious, just give him a time estimate and your hourly rate, but make sure he knows it's an estimate. Then, actually charge him hourly and keep him updated on how close to the estimate you are.

I wish that's how I'd done it when my partner and I started out. Early on we had to just blindly guess how long it would take. We've always charged flat fees, and that meant that early on we often took a hit.

That is a good idea, but why is it illegal to discuss prices? I am going to have to get back to him to and ask him to explain some of his requests more. As it is, I'm not sure what he means for a few things. But how hard is it nowadays to setup a shopping cart, and then for it to be easily managed? I have never done a shopping cart, so any suggestions of which one to use, and tips on implementing it would be greatly appreciated! I will also post in a relevant area for the shopping cart thing.

The fact that it's illegal has something to do with avoiding price fixing. In fact, if I were you, I'd go back and edit out the actual dollar amount you state.

I've not used it personally (yet), but I believe AgoraCart is fairly nice. I know it integrates with some popular gateways and non-gateway payment options.

It is illegal in the US because of anti-trust laws, I believe. So unless you want to move to the UK . . . !
